Siege engine crew, workhorses

I would keep in mind that the game releases in 9 days now. With the team in crunch time, the focus is most likely on balance and bug fixes rather than making new models, textures, rigging and animations, etc.

Just my 2 cents

Since you put that under every of your comments, could you at least add up the cents for our reading pleasure? And science
of course.

I like to add them up based on how many times I comment in a certain thread.

I have done some game development before using Unity and Blender and its helped with my understanding on the art and development pipelines used by companies (of course, they will still be different since many companies use in-house engines or other engines not made publicly available)

I think we can add this one up to about 4 cents now

bro it really pisses me off how they just ignore that and dont even give a good reason to dont have them

to sum up
definitely it is! I do not like to categorize people but I think most of ppl dont caring about it are ppl that havnt played AoE 3 or AoM or CoH. When you are coming from those games you pretty much miss those little details that added a lot to the inmersion of the game

I played all those games and i still don’t really care :joy:

AoM is my most played Age game and most of its siege units have no crew. Also played tons of CoH and CoH2. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest the way siege has been implemented in AOE IV. I also wouldn’t mind if they had a crew but overall it’s a bit of a nothing-burger concern for me in the grand scheme of the game.

Because “readability”. It’s mostly the excuse they use to avoid everything we ask for.

If they want to stick with torches killing the siege units I like it better that they are unmanned. It just looks better. If they were manned we would need melee combat with the crew implemented.

This is the first legitimate argument against manned siege that I’ve see. Yes, having a manned treb or catapaults have torches thrown at it would look incredibly silly.

But I think it looks silly throwing torches at cannons. The exact same way it looks silly for rams, and cannons to go poof into tiny splinters.

Same with siege towers and trebs

I think the torches should stay on big siege. Like catapaults, trebs and siege towers. And for other siege it should be normal archer melee attack. Especially cannons. Then manning the siege will look fine.

But as the siege weapons “die” with a poof, maybe we can have the crew hit and killed by the flying pieces XD.

  • Focused on readability.
  • Made one of the least readable RTS games.

Just Relic things ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I had no problem to differentiate different unit types in beta at all. Like whatsoever.
Mby longbows from regular bows or similar but other than that no.

Thing is most weapons have a set damage type/value.

The (torch) weapon people use on siege units has a set value related to attack speed, dmg, and range.

Even though we have a myriad of threads around this topic already and I’m sure we’ll have to live without siege crew forever, I will still voice my opinion every time this comes up: unmanned siege is dumb. Why don’t we have floating crossbows and swords then? Why do we need the soldiers? Even in AoE II the devs found it hard to draw that distinction: “Are bombard cannons and organ guns siege units or hand weapons? Are they too small to look ok moving by themselves? Aw damn! Let’s crew them”

If you respect some level of realism, you don’t run into those issues.

Somebody compared this to racing games. I remember that the first thing that happened once technology allowed for transparent glass in 3D games was racing games adding a driver. Go and take a look at NFS4. I remember early F1 and Nascar games also having “ghost” pit stops and people complaining about it, but at least the excuse was that the tech was not there yet.

Well logically that works with wooden structures.

I just do not understand why that’s a thing with metal cannons. Throw all the torches at a cannon you like, you ain’t putting any dent in it!
Or
Even a nest of bees that’s literally sparking everywhere.

It’s like giving bonus damage to archers against armour plated or shield baring units.

Well tbf, slashing at a big metal cannon isn’t going to damage it much.

I like to think the torches burn the wooden parts of the siege units?
Or eventually make things blow up (gunpowder) etc.

It would be nice to just have better destruction animations in general. The whole “poof” animation just doesn’t lend well to player experience.

But I feel gameplay-wise torches are fine.

Hence why if you man them then you are immobilising them by killing off the siege engineers

100% lol I just cannot comprehend the lead designer looking at that Houdini poof and going “ah, genius!”

Yeah but once again, we would still have to have the siege weapon break with the dead crew.
Otherwise the siege being unusable after would make no sense.

I think the idea of capturing siege is cool but it is also a very non-Aoe idea.

Perfect idea!
