With Persian replacing Paladins with Savar & Romans replacing Two Handed Swordsman with Legionarries,I hope if devs are going for a Byzantine rework, they would replace the Halberdier line with Skoutatoi instead of another Legionary. I can’t speak numbers yet but at least I have an idea how they should be compare with ordinary Halberdier, this is my idea:
They have pierce armor
They have less attack
They are slower
They have more HP
These are depictions & also an old model from AoE 2 HD from one of the mods that I found
But more than a cavalier. Upgrading a unit and getting less than what it currently has would not be cool, but that’s not what Alexios meant so don’t read that reply
err, Byz already lack blast furnace, not sure if them having even less attack is a good idea. If anything they should have +2 attack to compensate for the lack of blast furnace.
Them lacking speed is terrible because infantries are already on the weak side because of slow speed. Their main job is to counter cav and if they can’t catch cav, what’s the point of this upgrade? if anything, this is a huge degrade.
having extra pierce armor is fine maybe +1 but not extra hp. These guys already have -25% discount, no need to have extra hp on top.
I would actually give them a passive ability of -10% population just like Savar and legionaire having their own unique ability.
My aim is to have the Skoutatoi as a tankier version of the Halberdier, so them not having as much damage as halbs is my way of balancing them. I did consider that slower movement speed would be a large weakness for them, but I’d rather increase either their HP or pierce armor more to a sufficient level.
Though not super historically accurate for the Teutons. Most religious military orders (i.e. Templars, Hospitallers) had origins in France, not the Holy Roman Empire.
That’s correct, but the Crusader Knight that the game represented are the Ritterbruder from the Teutonic Order which indeed aligned with the civ Teutons
