Strange Marketing and CC around the Three Kingdom DLC

Just an interesting observation; the marketing around this DLC has been…weird.

Firstly the steam page goes up. Nothing too out of the ordinary here; mostly focusing on the 3K civs, and putting the Jurchens and Khitans almost like an afterthought (in fact some initial posts were confused if they were even in there at all).

Then content creator videos pop up, and things seem normal. Videos on all the civs, regionals and clips of their theme music. Before I get to the meat of this post; another observation. All the videos of the 3K civs, their theme music etc have lower viewer count than the Khitans and Jurchens, sometimes as much as half (and not in the smaller numbers, thousands less).

Now, let’s talk about the official marketing.

The Tumbleweed. my favorite email conversation-saving… | by Lexi Lewtan | Ice Breaking | Medium

No video on release, and still nothing now. Only video footage of the DLC is a short section at the end of the PS5 trailer.

Meanwhile everything else has been 2 youtube shorts, and some posters on twitter and FB both relatively barren sites compared to several years ago. But what’s really interesting is the focus. Khitans, Jurchens, UUs, regionals…but no mention of the 3K civs outside of talking about all 5 together.

And then…the content creator videos. Several people covering the civs did overviews of them, but didn’t finish the 3K ones. TheViper did one on each…but stopped before finishing with the Wei and is now back to his usual videos and almost ignoring the 3K DLC altogether. T90 has only made a video of Khitans vs Jurchens, and has not covered the Three Kingdom civs at all. And SotL hasn’t done individual analysis outside of the initial video.

Now add the random discount of AoE2, and the packaging of 3K into a bundle. Neither are positive signs for a DLC selling well when you try to cut prices/bundle it in try to and shift the dial.

This is all rather unusual. Is it too much hope to think that this “sweeping under the rug” of these “factions” might be an indication that things might be moving to have them removed from ranked? Or major changes to them to make them into real civs? (One can hope). Perhaps it’s just trying to avoid too much more controversy, or trying not to enflame the situation?

But what we can see for sure is that attention has shifted drastically away from them in the last week or two.

That’s just 1 out of the 100 coincidences so it does not explain anything

They are not lying. They just think those promotional images are more attractive—— but they did it for your own good not to lure you into buying

EDIT: AOE3 got a DLC “announcement” then they went full radio silence for a year. We all know why and what happened. They refuse communication only when they knew communication will only do them harm. Otherwise you’ll be seeing tiktok videos on every individual 3K heroes now.
They want to make money. They’re just bad at it

@Tyranno13 the reason Viper hasn’t released the last 3k civ video is because it’s still on the wei…I’ll see myself out.

Well that’s because it didn’t actually exist. This does.

T90 just released a video about the Wu vs Shu on Arena, I won’t watch it. If someone watch it let me know what he thinks about them and about the 3K civs. His other video about the Jurchens vs Khitans was amazing, hope he can get more videos about their UUs and UTs.
Not sure about Ornlu videos but agree, all the videos about the 3K have less viewers than for the other two.
I already bought the DLC, looking forward for the Jurchens and Khitans but I will try to avoid the 3K civs but the campaign.
Great analysis @Tyranno13 , as always

Ah! I do remember something about him being on holiday, so likely cramming them in.

I do what I can.

Keep on the lookout for some more about my mod btw. Looking to expand it given the disappointment of this DLC.

I hope it’s not just them removed from ranked. But also, moved to their own game mode like chronicles.
They don’t belong to the base game.

@Tyranno13 You could have merged all your posts related to your disappointment of DLC by keeping it one thread rather than opening one everyday.

I think these are getting at separate while admittedly related things. putting all this into a single topic would make it overly broad IMO.

I thought you said for me to never talk to you? Does this not work both ways?

I watched some but not every second of his recent videos (those are very long and detailed videos btw), his recent videos is all about technical stuff: Testing units, Civs analyze, etc.

He did make one video to summarize the controversy, that one from 2 weeks ago, he does said some of the criticism does reflect him, but that’s all.

EDIT: How can I forgot that legendary video of he predicted 3K a few days before he got the early access. And he also think 3K does not belong in AoE2

At the beginning of a bunch of his videos he does leak out some frustration about the existence of these “factions”.

I mean, he made a video before release about how stupid it would be to have the three kingdoms as civs. So I doubt he’s exactly happy.

Oh yes, he predicted 3K a few days before he got the early access, and the “They hate Ornlu because he told them the truth” memes was born.

How can I forgot, that was hilarious (and sad)

When you impose yourself so heavily on the entire forum it’s hard to avoid you. I open threads expecting new perspective from new people but it’s you and your friends discussing the same thing all over again, oh well…
Sorry for being a prick. I take leave.

Joyful.

Most of those threads were posted quite a way apart. They are still different topics however, and if I had more info related to them, I posted that in there.

Not my fault people replied to them and kept them relevant.

From a casual observer’s perspective, the marketing has seemed fine. They announced its imminent release, seemed excited to announce it, showed a video, opened it up for pre-sale, and I think let some eSports personalities have early access, and we just have to wait until May 6th or whatever. It’s not like they are launching a new iPhone or Marvel movie. I guess if you want to find issues or double-meanings with everything, that’s pretty easy to do.

‘Why have we not seen a teaser trailer for AoE5 yet?? They must have decided to not make one after the mixed response of AoE4. It’ll probably never be made now’

There is an Xbox Game Studios publisher sale going on. That probably has something to do with it, as opposed to being random or conspiracy fuel:

I’m not sure if anyone regularly posting on here can call themselves casual.

However they are launching this game onto a new console, a tad bigger than most DLC lead-ups.

The accompanying message with the DLC announcement put emphasis on attracting new players with the choice of setting of the DLC. I would have expected them to push those elements more.

Fair. I wasn’t aware of this.

It wasn’t really part of the overall observation. More a side-point.

Good point  But I think with most DLCs bringing new civs over the past few years, I tend to notice the first couple waves of marketing info, and then let the info simmer until launch date at which time another announcement goes out, in like Steam page or I find out about in the forums. I think their Marketing pushes to me work, but then I don’t know what goes on in addition to or on the edges of that. So for this latest DLC, it doesn’t seem different ‘to me’

Side note: As an AoE Insider, I’ve been sad to be one of the last to know about some patches, launches, or announcements, as other social media outlets get priority and AoE Insiders forgotten. Actually, even the forum is sometimes the last to know. That has happened a number of times

… launching onto a new console

Ahh, yes. I don’t have a PS5, so am not sure what marketing is going there. But if it is radio silence there, like in the PS Store and what not, for the most part, that would be odd

… more of a side point

No worries. I don’t know for sure that is the reason, but figured it could be a factor. I saw other games within the franchise being on sale as a result, so thought tbag might be the case here

And even Ornlu, who I follow among the AoE content creators, you can tell he really struggled to make the 3 Kingdoms videos.

I’m a casual.
Isn’t that pretty much the definition for someone that neither plays competitively nor becomes of challenges, like achievements, speedruns or high scores?
I assume at least half of the people here are "casuals”.
