Strange Marketing and CC around the Three Kingdom DLC

Yes, these would have been done months go, would have been a waste to not post them. But they posted on socials to advertise the Khitan and Jurchen ones, never the 3k civs.

I wonder why, apparently the DLC is selling really well, even the best in the whole AOE franchise according to the insider from Masmorra hmmmmmmmmm

Are you referring to his comment “I’m old and have a hard time accepting change”? Or did I miss something

There’s a two-word abbreviation that fits it perfectly: psy-op.

What prompted Sega to take CA to task is that they were hemorrhaging money so badly with a DOA game that Sega threatened to shut them down if they didn’t stick to form.

The reason why I think Microsoft won’t do the same to World’s Edge is simple: Sega’s main income earner is games sales, while Microsoft’s main income earner is OS sales.

To expand on this: Sega acts as a games publisher primarily, and has to oversee their studios more closely due to that fact. They are much more invested in the development of games under their brand. It’s a primary industry for them.

Microsoft, though, pursues games as a side income rather than a main income. Their business revolves around tge Windows OS, and that is where their focus lies as a primary concern. Gaming for them isn’t a major concern because, if the studio dies, their major bread-winner is still going strong. Gaming is at best a secondary, if not tertiary priority.

In the steamdb its in a better spot than Sultans Ascend in Top Seller. Its #180 or something like that, TSA is around #400. The big question is why people are buying it? To Khitanguts and Jurchens (like happened with ROR, which AOE2-only player sbought just to have Romans)? They bought because the Three Kingdoms hype? For the campaigns? To show support? We and WE will only know when the reviews are out.
If the campaings will have so much “magical” events are really too much on heroes, like the Shu, that I watched Ornlu playing, I guess it will be another major failure. Same case if most bought it for two civs only.

Good point, I agree.

I think World’s Edge = Microsoft though? Their employees are MS employees. The studio’s function is to oversee the AoE franchise, according to Wikipedia. If they are the decision makers Idk who can pressure them.

Or the simple answer could be what always happens in cases like these: the buyers have low standards or bad criteria. It’s the reason companies like EA, Ubisoft and Bethesda keep selling well, and now it’s affecting this game.

Where on streamdb can I see this? I would like to compare it with other Aoe2 and aoe3 DLCs

That’s me, unfortunately. I only have RoR because of the WRE.
With the 3k DLC, however, it’s different… I’m actually not in the mood to buy the DLC just for the Jurchens and Khiguts. Because 30% of the DLC is something I don’t even want. also overall the DLC is just a punch in the guts. RoR was what ever at the end.

But I also think that many people will buy the DLC this time simply because it’s all about the content. For 16.99, you get a lot, regardless of whether you like the DLC or not. That’s a very good price compared to TMR and the other DLCs.

Go to the dlc page and check the charts tab

Here, at the part where it says “store data”. We are doomed :moai:

They are, as an internal studio under XBOX Game Studios. That honestly makes it worse imo because instead of just shutting the studio down, they can retool the studio on anything else at the drop of a hat and make AoE as a franchise abandonware if it doesn’t pan out.

We should all of us collectively pool our resources, start an indie studio, and buy the rights to Age of Empires.

Damn, this DLC will change this game forever. It may not look impressive at first, but forget about the Sultans Ascend with 400th spot or smth. Seems like the Chronicles is the most successful DLC recently compared to RoR and Victors and Vanquished, according to these charts, and hear this out: it’s in the 800s. This is huge; these numbers are ridiculous. From the 800s to the 180s, that’s an absurd jump for AoE2. Btw, we cannot see the first three DLCs anymore since they’re connected with the main game. Perhaps they were more successful than Chronicles, I don’t know. All I can say is that this DLC will be the gamechanger and is probably already a huge success, financially at least, not for us.

Until there is a way to dissect this DLC’s sales from people buying premium edition for PS5, I still have my doubts.

Yeah this cannot bode well, at least not for people who care about the game’s theme. RIP Age of Empires 2, say hello to Age of Fantasy. Yay I can’t wait to play with Camelot, Wukong’s expedition, the Beowulf campaign, 1000 and one nights campaign…

These are Steam numbers, though. Completely unrelated to PS5 numbers. SteamDB doesn’t track PS5 sales.

Ok. Then what’s going on here?

The marketing strategy is really pared back and seems almost scared of its own shadow. So with so little advertising, where are these sales coming from? (Unless DoI and the earlier ones were really really good, and we just can’t tell anymore)

Maybe the pandering actually worked this time. Or maybe because 5 civs for this price is a better deal than previous DLCs, who nose

Perhaps.

Or perhaps the Chinese market is just so absurdly large that you don’t even need to get a large percentage interested to make a ton of sales.

Either way, it sadly looks like that is the most likely answer; Chinese market.

And considering this DLC barely covers the Three Kingdoms period, and ignores all other parts of Chinese history, it’s quite insulting people’s intelligence.

To get this many? I doubt people are looking that closely.
