Civilization Idea: Austro-Hungarian Empire

A dual monarchy that mixes powerful Austrian artillery with fast Hungarian cavalry. Players choose between Vienna or Budapest in Age II, affecting economy and military.
Civilization Traits:
Mercenary discount and better availability
Cultural cards for boosts (folk music = faster villagers, celebration = temporary buffs)
Choose between:
- Vienna: better cannons, more coin
- Budapest: faster, cheaper cavalry
Unique Units:
- Hungarian Hussar (fast, strong, cheaper)
- Pandur (stealthy musketeer)
- Habsburg Cannon (high damage)
- Bavarian Merc (elite infantry)
Why Add?
- Historically important Central European power
- New mechanics: government switching, mercenary strategy
- Fits in a future European DLC
Would love to hear your thoughts!

At this point the answer’s gonna be “if you want the civ you’ll have to make it yourself.”
Good news is that it’s an European civ so you can make it in like, a week tops.

Indeed. The Denmark and Poland mods are very well done, especially Denmark. Morocco is awesome. Haven’t tried your Filipino mod yet, but I am really looking forward to Chile and Argentina.
Our modders are great, so we’re in good hands.
We already have multiple cards and a Revolution for Germans that can basically transform them into the Austro-Hungarian Empire, I really don’t see any point in their addition.
I understand, and you’re right — the German civ does have elements that refer to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, especially through cards and revolutions.
But imagine how much better it would be if the empire was fully represented as its own unique civilization, officially in the game and not just through mods or partial references.
Almost everything you described is present in the German civ one way or the other. Rename your hc to Vienna and youre basically there.

You’re absolutely right that the German civ already includes a lot of elements related to Austria-Hungary — and that’s actually why I think it deserves to be more than just a rename.
Having a fully fleshed-out civ with its own design, architecture, music, units, and mechanics — like a Dual Monarchy system or diverse ethnic troop composition — would bring the empire’s unique identity to life far more than just swapping a city name.
I feel like it has a lot of potential to be just as distinct from Germany as Italy is, for example.

Austria Hungary also falls largely outside the games time period. Not being created through compromise before Austria was excluded from a united Germany.
Anyway discussing new civs for an abandoned game is perhaps a bit pointless.
As Hoopthrower said, if you want a new civ its modding time.

If there are already Austro-Hungarian grenadiers and related cards included in the game, it makes me wonder why the developers have not created a full civilization representing the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
They have gone so far as to create civilizations based on ancient tribes, which are arguably less prominent in world history compared to such a significant European empire.
Given the historical importance and unique characteristics of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it seems like it would be a great fit to add it as a distinct civilization.
Adding it could bring fresh gameplay mechanics and a new cultural flavor that many players interested in European history would appreciate.
If you enjoy writing detailed ideas so much… maybe you should start doing it.

This forum has an ongoing debate about this. It seems that the community is in favor of not having a german split. I proposed a ‘‘danubian’’ civ though.

Hello AoE community and developers,
I would like to propose adding the Kingdom of Hungary as a new playable civilization in Age of Empires III.
Hungary has a rich and fascinating history, especially during the early modern period covered by the game. It played a significant role in European politics, military history, and culture, often acting as a crucial border state between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy.
Here are a few reasons why I believe the Kingdom of Hungary would be a great addition:
- Unique military units, such as the famous Hungarian hussars and well-trained infantry.
- A distinctive playstyle combining strong cavalry and defensive strategies.
- Interesting historical buildings and technologies reflecting Hungary’s rich heritage.
- A civ that fits well within the game’s time period and geographical focus.
Introducing Hungary would enrich the game’s European lineup and offer players a fresh and historically grounded experience.
Thank you for considering this suggestion! I would love to hear the community’s thoughts and any ideas on how this civ could be designed.
Best regards,
[minekapitany]
They didn’t create Austro-Hungary because we already have a germans civ.
Yes, germans, as in the ethnicity, that includes Austria.

I do use ChatGPT sometimes to help me with English and to express my ideas clearly, but all the thoughts and questions are genuinely mine. I’m really interested in the game and the community, so I try to contribute as best as I can.
I’m a big fan of Age of Empires III, and I really care about its history and gameplay. One of the civilizations I’m very interested in is the Kingdom of Hungary or a form of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. I think it could add something unique to the game.
Since English is not my first language, I sometimes use tools like ChatGPT to help me express my thoughts clearly and correctly. But all the ideas, the excitement, and the questions truly come from me.
I’m not here to spam or cause any problems. I just want to share my passion for the game and hear what others think. I appreciate the community and your patience with me.
Thanks for understanding.

Bro, we have rules on the forum, one of which is no spamming. Your thread about Austro-Hungary and Hungary are very similar, so I’ve combined them into one. Please, in the future, don’t create more threads than necessary, to avoid misunderstandings with the community.
Thanks and welcome to the forum.
they’ve announced they won’t update and release any new things for AOE3. Stop fantasizing.
