Dave Pottinger just shared a little bit of background info regarding the new formation system once envisioned and advertised for AoE3. He was the one working on it, but development took a while and too many other folks in the company were afraid it was too different:

Yes, you have the E3 2005 demo where they show how they fight in formation…

i think its safe to say no one holds any grudges to you, or tantalus and FE in general, all anger on here has been squarely directed to WE and their mishandling, yes retold is a great game but it stings knowing 3 isn’t getting much love as a result

both things aoe3 could surely benefit from, even if this approach isn’t super conventional
i mean
look at this and tell me its all ok:

this is on large map 4v4 with 200 pop btw, not some 500 pop mod
you can even trigger this in 1v1 if you overpop enough

The thing is AoE III DE has been developed with 1 core and no multicore in mind

the dev time was probably far to short to get multithreading working to finish the game in time for october 15th 2020 release, given how poor the release day state already was

Man I whish they would have released the game with those formations
What a missed opportunity!

Yes, they didn’t do it because it slowed down the gameplay a lot and they wanted AoE 3 to be more fluid and dynamic…probably if they go back to AoE 5 in the colonial era, they’ll probably bring back the formations, but make the units have abilities that make them faster and move faster…
