The branding of AOE3DE

My eternal dream is AoE and Total War in the realities of WW1 - this is how AoE 4 should be!

At the moment, the best option would probably be a large DLC about the Victorian Era (1818-1918) for AoE 3. This could work somewhat similarly to RoR DLC.

How come it was never explored in RTS?

Real-time strategy[edit]

Battle of Empires
(2015). I can’t vouch for how good it really is, but I’ve heard a few people say it’s fun.

World War One (2005) I just noticed on Steam. It seems to get fairly positive reviews, which say it is fun but rather dated.

Let me know if you get either of them, I’m curious myself!

Yes, for me it would have to be a new separate AoE set in the belle epoque or directly in the 20th century (world wars, cold war and information age until the near future - colonization of the Moon and Mars in 2035)…

Age of War
(20 characters)

Empire Total War was very hyped before release. It was fresh, innovative, and has unprecedented scale. Unfortunately it suffered from several problems at release and have not been fixed since (hmmm….sounds familiar?).
Fall of the Samurai is considered by many as one of the best expansions in historical Total Wars.

There is potential audience for this setting. I believe many people’s expectations of this setting is huge battles and fast evolving society and technology. For the AOE series particularly people were also expecting greater scales and better historical representation. If AOE3 was not released with a very esports focus (smaller scale, only small symmetric maps, actually smaller variety at the first glance than AOM at release, a level-up system which turns out hindering pvp in contrast to intended), it could capture this audience much better.
And that direction is particularly ironic considering it built a very deep system with huge potentials, not suitable for fast paced pvp. If only it spent more efforts on enriching the pve contents, improving the scenario editor, and making better use of the depth of the system.

Age of Empires 5:The Rise of the Modern Nations xd…

Yes, if they had not moved so far from what AoE 2 was, and AoE 3 would have had European colonization campaigns in America, another chicken would have crowed…

Agree. I think that is what AoE4 should be.

That being said, a good WWI game needs a fairly sophisticated interactive terrain and weather system. The trenches of the Western, Mountains of the Italian front, vast flatlands of the Eastern, and the deserts of the Middle East front heavily shaped the tactics of the respective participants. This would be a major deviation from the current AoE series.

Maybe some inspiration can be drawn from Men of War series?

That would not be a bad idea. Rise of nations have a few mechanisms I think AoE3 (or its successor) could potentially benefit from, such as:

  • rare resources (expand on existing trading sites)
  • a fourth (or fifth) resource: metal
  • squad-based unit (i.e. each infantry unit consists of three personnel)

Yes I agree…

Yes, it would be like:

WW1 (1914-1918):1914-1918 Battle of Empires

WW2 (1939-1945): Men of War 2

Cold War (1947-1991): Men of War Vietnam

Modern Era (1991-2035): Command and Conquer Generals

Yes, for me the game would have as resources food, steel produced from factories (which would act as wood), minerals (which would act as coin) (uranium mines would be the most important) and oil (which is produced by in the oil wells as happens in Civilization))

WWI RTS would suit Company of Heroes better.

There’s a very real chance Age of Empires IV didn’t become that because it’d overlap too much with Relic’s, well, main game.

If you want to talk about AoE 4 being set after AoE 3 I made a thread for that in the off-topic forum a while back!

I think it’s fun to think about

Totally agree
AOE 4 should have been done in the World War setting!

No Great war game ever, please. That would be one Age game I would never buy.

At this point I think it would be nice to have a successor game to AOE-3 that tries to be a reboot of the current game, rescuing all the best and discarding the not so good.

I even think it could be a separate game from the franchise, not because it is “not worthy of being an AOE” as some say, but because there would be more creative freedom and it would not have to receive the approval of a divided community.

I love the time period - age of exploration. Would be glad to see another game in that time but how could it be better than AOE3?

With things like this???:

Adding new elements like limited vision due to obstacles, like in Starcraft 2 and AOE-4. Height advantage, rivers with waterfalls and generally more dynamic water, etc. Essentially a new engine.

Redoing the metropolis system so that it is chosen during the game, and not pre-game.

Europeans with universities and a fourth resource, etc.

I think these are cool ideas.

The fourth resource could be Splendor - generated by the Town Center, the Church, the Capitol, the Factory, the Arsenal and of course the University (all buildings outside the University would generate a small source of Splendor). This resource could be spent at the University on completely new Technologies, Units and other improvements. Each civ would also have something unique available in the University. The University would be available in the Imperial Age to make this Age more attractive and make it a more competitive option to the Revolution.

African Universities would be renamed into Madrassa.

Well Petroglyph released this one last year, but it’s more of a Total War vibe… but yeah, since they didn’t want AoE 4 to compete with CoH 3, they decided to do a remake of AoE 2 xd…

The problem is that otherwise, you limit the historical periods of the saga… furthermore, technically, the World Wars were still an “age of empires” (although after them the decolonization process began which ended in the 70s)… the Empire Earth saga had campaigns in the World Wars and even the Cold War and within all, the “AoE gameplay” fits well…

Yes, considering that the saga was “restarted” in AoE Online in ancient times and now AoE 4 is in the Middle Ages, I think that AoE 5 would be colonial, then AoE 6 would be modern and AoE 7 would be futuristic…

Yes, I think it will be like AoE 4 but more colonial (that is, a remake of AoE 3 but now not as “innovative or groundbreaking”; but a more classic AoE)…

“An AOE 3 Remake that is not an AOE and is more like an AOE 2”
I think it should be more like Cossacks 3!

Cossacks 3 was a disappointment compared to the previous games in the Cossacks game series.

Turns out this is possible in 3DE

This is not possible in the current game. It is simply a mounting.
