The future of AoE2:DE expansions

Oh, you wouldnt know how many civs you can still add. The hardest part will be the UUs actually since adding new bonuses is fairly easy

Should stop adding civs. There are too many already… You start to wander into gimmicks and mechanics that doesnt make much sense on RTS game OR the variation between them is barely noticeable in which point it doesnt make sense to have it (just like Steppe Lancer should not be in the game). Perhaps make them skins of other civs if people want the architecture or whatever.

They did not interact with the medieval ā€œFranksā€ they interacted with the Colonial ā€œFrenchā€

The game says Franks - and that is supposed every ethnic French.

You dont need to do that yet, even if the devs are already doing that. I can give you a ton of bonuses for civs that fit the mechanics already in the game

The Franks were a confederation of Germanic tribes that was originally composed of a mix of groups settled between the Rhine and the Weser Rivers. The two most prominent of these tribes were the Ripuarians and the Salians who led the others.
What is Modern-day France was Frankia or Kingdom of the Franks. Francia came later, but there is a difference between French and Frank

These two are imo the top priority for africa. They achieved high urban and social development and actively participated in the indian ocean trade network.

Would swahili fit a medieval game?somali yes can fit well with ethiopians.

They do imo. They would have to be a naval civ. Swahilis were integrated in the indian ocean trade since late antiquity exchanging slaves, gold and such from inner africa and exchaning it for arabian and indian goods. They formed an islamic sultanate not different than those in the middle east.

From Ibn battuta’s wiki page:

He described the city [Kilwa] as ā€œone of the finest and most beautifully built towns; all the buildings are of wood, and the houses are roofed with reedsā€

[Ibn Battuta] was particularly impressed by the planning of the city, believing it to be the reason for Kilwa’s success along the coast.

I admit, however, swahilis would not be easy to deisgn as a civ. Some things would have to be invented. Specially the UU.

some random thing i found on google images:

Some could work as UUs, but still missing a war-like one for castle…

Its always better to select civis which fought one another.things like trade are boring to add in scenarios.

Dhow is an arabic ship not something unique to africa.

You can just call the uu moran which means male warrior.

Further information would be nice.

Assegai was a famous spear used by Bantu people, notably by the Kilwa Sultanate and city states such as Zanzibar. Iklwa was an advanced version of the assegai, invented by the Zulus - So I guess Assegai Spearman would be more fitting in a Medieval game.

Mtepe is a traditional Swahili ship - The Kilwa Sultanate had strong Navy - They conquered many island city states and colonized Northwest Madagascar

I have started to think that Songhai would be the best African civilization to add. The Songhai Empire was preceded by the Gao Empire which was based on the strong trading city Gao. In the 13th century it was conquered by the Mali Empire. In the 15th century Songhai fought for independence and rose against the declining Malians thanks to their king Sunni Ali who was a talented commander. Sunni Ali annexed the remaining parts of the Mali Empire and beat the Mossi, Fulani and Dogon. Timbuktu was a great city of the Mali Empire once but the Tuaregs, a Berber group took over, however, Timbuktu was captured by the Songhai Empire in 1468. During that. Djenne was another big trading city, ruled by the Malians. It was sieged by the Songhai Empire for 7 years. It was a hard city to breach so Sunni Ali cut all the supplies of the city to starve its inhabitants. Sunni Ali built the first navy in West Africa, the commander of the navy was called Hi-Koy. After the death of Sunni Ali his son became the king, but Askia The Great took over his position by bypassing a law to take the throne, he was not even an ethnic Songhay. In 1493 Askia The Great defeated the forces of Sunni Baru and killed him in Gao. Soon after he declared a Jihad against the Mossi Kingdoms and Borgu. The forces of the Greater Fulo Empire were defeated, The Hausa citystates: Katsina, Zaria, Gobir were captured, the biggest Hausa kingdom Kano had to pay tribute also Fouta-Toro and Diara, two Senegalese kingdoms were conquered. The capital Gao had 100000 inhabitants. However Askia not only increased the size of the empire, he built many universities and mosques. The leader of the army was the Dyina-Koy, the army had the famous Mandekalu Infantry and Cavalry and Tuareg Camelry too, since they became Songhai allies later.

I think this civ should get a 6 scenario campaign.

  1. Destroying Malian towns, destroy Mossi, Dogon and Fulani camps (1464-68)
  2. Capturing Timbuktu from Tuareg Berbers (1468)
  3. Siege of Djenne and destroying Mandinka villages (1466-73)
  4. Askia The King of Songhai, killing Sonni Baru (1493)
  5. Jihad against the Mossi and Borgu (1497-1505)
  6. Capturing, Katsina Zaria and Gobir cities, intimidate Kano, defeat the Greater Fulo army and conquer Fouta-Toro and Diara (1512-13)

I think we need 5 new West African civs: Songhai, Mossi, Hausa, Yoruba and Kanembu. Songhai, Mossi and Hausa would be present in this campaign while Yoruba and Kanembu would be substitutes for Diara, Fouta-Toro, Borgu, Dogon, Fulani etc.

All those are under the mali umbrella right?

Personally id like to see an umbrella bantu civi to cover all of south africa,if india can be one umbrella why cant they?

They were neighbours only. They are different ethnic groups. Askia and Sunni Ali were greater than most of the Malian AI names, yet they aren’t in the game. Ghanaians had the same ethnicity as Malians, but the devs think different: Ghanaians are Ethiopians in the Sundjata campaign.

As a Serbian who knows a bit of history I feel that I can contribute to the discussion of Slavic nations.

First of all national identities of Serbs and other South Slavs like Croats, Bosnians etc. didn’t exist in the time frame of this game which is the middle ages. The dominant Balkan kingdom on the territory of Yugoslavia during much of the high middle ages was Rascia (pronounced RaÅ”ka in Serbo-Croatian). Other smaller kingdoms were Doclea/Zeta (modern Montenegro), Travunia, Zahumlia, Pagania etc that were vassals of Rascia much of the time. Rascia controlled southern and central Serbia and much of Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Macedonia. Kingdom of Croatia was further in the west but also fairly small and a vassal of Hungary for much of the period. Venice controlled most of Dalmatia (coastal Croatia). I think Rascia is the best choice for a civ in that region because it’s the largest of the South Slavic kingdoms and the only one to become a Tsardom for a brief period and control a huge swath of the Balkans. And the name ā€œRasciaā€ doesn’t have a Serbian nationalist element of any sort. In fact, Tsar DuÅ”an’s empire was very multiethnic. And he was working hard to unify all the south Slavs and Greeks against the Turks before he suddenly died shortly before the Battle of Maritsa that led to a 500-year Ottoman domination of the Balkans.

Poland is another civilization that probably should be in the game considering they had some large independent kingdoms in the Middle Ages. The current Slavic civilizations represents Muscovy (predecessor of Russia) most of all which didn’t become a significant player until the 14th Century.

But as a Serbian I have zero problem being represented by this generic Slavic civ. After all, the languages and cultures of all Slavs a 1000 years ago were definitely even more similar than they are today. And I’m sure most Russians, Ukrainians, Poles, Croats etc. don’t mind being referred to as Slavs either.

My suggestion is add Rascians and Poles and rename current Slavs to Muscovites or Rus.

I wouldn’t object to East Slavs, West Slavs and South Slavs either though. Or even leaving it as is.
