The inappropriate content filter inappropriately handles mods

So, I attempted to publish a mod today. YAY!

What are some of the things I did?

  1. I added traditional Russian names for rus units. For example, instead of spearmen, they are called kopeyshchiki. Which is the english sounded out form of копейщики

  2. I increased cannon, bombard, great bombard, culverin, and other seige equipment ranges.

  3. I developed a way to make shinobi really good, while limiting them! This involves making shinboi use the same resource as bannermen, and limiting the global number of shinboi available at any time to 3, lowering their cost, and increasing their stats.

  4. I redesigned the economy in a way that makes it far more competitive. This includes farms costing 500 wood, boar that can be carried, shifting wood costs on spearmen into food, and lots of other changes. The result is that you no longer live on a map of plenty!

  5. I redesigned how population works! Oh my!

And when I went to publish my masterpiece? Oh yes. Localdb en has “innapropriate content” And this is a problem. I have made so many changes I really can’t find the content that offends the computer. And at this point, I know for a fact that its not a swear word in english. So I think its time for microsoft to come clean with its naughty word list. Its not right. I would at least like an option for the content editor to have automated swear word detection and cleaning if your going to say that random strings in other languages that are not english are swear words. Oh yes, if you arrange your strings in just a certain way I wont compile now. Hehe.

Its diabolical, and microsoft has sinnned.

It’s hilarious that a word that is included in the game doesn’t pass the word filter, look: ####################

In my opinion word filters need to toggled.

It should allow it now. It’s supposed to give you an error message with the location of the issue, but sounds like maybe it wasn’t clear enough. You can always report issues like this to support or post them here and tag me and we’ll take a look and fix it when it’s making a bad call.

But that’s not really the main problem. OP just didn’t understand the error message. It says the line in database. On other hand it’s stupid that the line itself is censored in the error message…

Anyway, the fundamental issue with the profanity filter being used on mods was never addressed…
e.g. Profanity filter blocks mod updates this bug report was completely ignored on your end. Current filter is applied in extremely bad way. After all that’s one of the main reason why I stopped updating my mods: End of Advanced Game Settings mod

3. Update lottery.
You may ask, what is this? Well, it’s the one thing that drives me mad and discourages me to even touch the mod. Each time I try to update the mod I encounter one issue. I can’t! Well unless I want to repeat extremely entertaining process of launching the game, pressing “update mod” and closing it once it fails. Then do it once more, hoping that the mod will eventually pass the check and update…

Why ? They decided that all mods are checked by profanity filter. I can guarantee that this feature never worked properly. Unless the desired behaviour was to frustrate modders. In that case I am probably the one affected the most as I dared to have multiple localizations for my mod as community desired it.

Anyway, the best way to see this issue and why it’s so frustrating is to head to the modding discord and see the update-lottery thread from a few weeks ago. Here is link to modding discord and to update lottery thread that perfectly summarizes this issue and how it’s ignored.

It considers completely fine words and translations as problematic, each time update process is attempted it throws another random issue…

and same can be said here on forums, where it does same thing, profanity filter just breaks everything, like quoting my nickname will result in being censored…

The filtering will go away when people stop doing bad things on the internet, so the best we can do is work to improve it. Specific reports of failures help us do that as we can adjust/add/remove rules to help avoid these issues. But there’s no magic solution that’s going to fix everything all at once. Like I said earlier, if you submit specific issues to support, we can fix them.

Well I did submit report, nothing changed… We are 1 and half year later and updating mod ingame still returns random error due to profanity filtering mods. And it’s not even consistent, if you bothered to look at the discord thread, or even the original bug report. I wrote it even back then, it returns random subset of strings as errors each time you attempt to update the mod. That’s fundamental issue that needs to be resolved first. When it’s consistently failing on specific word, then it makes sense to report. But current system does not work properly, it returns random subset and once in a while it passes through the system that tried to tell user that mod has improper localization just a moment ago…

So what I am supposed to report ? when your team is the one that ignores the problem. If anything I did everything I could and the fact that I have mod that can trigger it any time should be more then enough to start addressing the issue.

And let me ask again how does filter work properly when it includes words that contains even 3 letters as offensive (e.g. first 3 letters of my nickname both here and ingame) and will automatically flag it as problem. We have 7000+ languages in world, blocking just ew letters is wrong on all levels, even more when it’s not looking at the context… Or when the filter flags yellow as offensive… or Mongol (game civ), or even words that are used by game itself… In the end the filter does not solve anything anyway, if someone wants to be bad person on internet they will find new ways to say mean things to others. In the end offensive depends also on context and the filter does not care about context at all…, which is core issue with it. If someone wants to make a mod that insults others, they can do it and your system will fail at noticing it. (and there is at least one that passed filter, despite being offensive)
