The upcoming 'Baltic' DLC - what Home City Cards & Minor civs do we want to see?

Ensemble Studios originally planned for combat to be available in the Discovery Age, and the available units would include Knights, Swordsmen, Crossbowmen, and Pikemen.

The lack of this hurts the most.

Who writes these Wiki?

For Portugal the best place to look would be in East Africa, the Arabian peninsula and south asia.

I agree, it almost makes more sense to have Portugal be a revolt for Spain than the Portuguese having Peru and Gran Colombia as revolts because of the iberian union

Give me Laplanders as a minor civ.

I think the best potential revolutions for Portugal would be Zanzibar and Canada. They controlled Zanzibar for 200 years before being expelled by the Omanis. And in Canada, they mapped and claimed Newfoundland and Labrador and settled fishing colonies in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

Maybe it could be generalized to “Swahili Coast”, since Portugal took and lost some of the city-states and sultanates several times.
It’s kind of a stretch, but I think it makes much more sense than Peru and Gran Colombia.

Making it explicitly Zanzibar would be much better fit than “Swahili Coast”.

Good revolution options seem to follow one of two criteria. Either they are a revolt of a settler colony, or the revolt of an ethnic minority from a contiguous empire.

The other Swahili cities were populated by the native Africans, but Zanzibar saw a large amount of Arab settlement so it was essentially a settler colony. And the Zanzibar Sultanate covered most of the Swahili Coast anyways so it is broad enough.

For the Portuguese, it’s a tough one - throughout history it was mainly the Dutch and Omanis (which even more validates them as a future civ!) kicking them out of their colonies! There’s actually very few that rebel and revolt in the timeline.

Uruguay and Venezuela would make better revolutions and Peru and Gran Colombia - these more linking them with initial colonies and some later history (Uruguay in particular). Tenious yes, but better than the current ones.

Omani is a reasonable revolt option too because as mentioned before, they expelled the Ports out of their territory all the time, though I’m on the fence as I feel they would do better as an actual civ (though Mexico and US exist as both)

You could also have a Port Loko (Sierra Leone) revolt, representing the natives (the Temne) who took this area over from the Ports.

Corsica could work for France too, give they revolted against the French when first purchased. Napoleon’s parents were involved in the revolt as well.

Corsica is a fantastic idea for a French rev.

They revolted from French but they were unsuccessful - they also revolted previously against the Geonese so would also make a good revolution from Italy too! They also established a Corsican Rebublic inbetween, established by Pasquale Paoli who incidently fought with Napoleon’s father.
In-game they could be quite fun with a reliance on guerilla units and stealth.

Also, they have a bad-ass flag:

At least 2-4 new minor factions would be enough. We’re not expecting 9 royal houses like in the last DLC. Nobody expected that, actually.

Everyone who has something to add can do it

I’d be content if it was just Inuit. They lived in Denmark’s Greenland territory so they’d be a great fit for this DLC. Any other minor civ would probably be from Europe which is already fully covered by royal houses so adding more would be a stretch.

For maps, Iceland would be an obvious inclusion. It would be awesome if it had a volcano. But Iceland also has some challenges like not actually having any large land animals that could work for hunts. I really hope they’d add some new fauna like seals instead of putting animals that don’t fit. Maybe also Greenland sharks, narwhals, and giant squids for guardians and icebergs for nuggets. All of that stuff would be great for maps of other areas like Svalbard, Greenland, or Norway/Fjords.

We’d also need more revolutions for these civs. At a minimum there should be Norway for Denmark, Ukraine for Poland, and Livonia for both. It would also be great to have Greece since that was a big omission from KotM.

I don’t see ourselves adding more royal houses, but I’m glad you’re a big fan of them - they’re also my favorite type of minor civs in the game!

Just an annual reminder to set your expectations bar low for Royal Houses. Maybe regular Natives (Inuit for example) are not included here, but it’s probably best to assume no Minor Civs - anything different and it’s a nice bonus.

Plans can always change.

Do we know when in 2023? If they still believed they’d only be adding Poland and Denmark as revolutions it’s possible they will reevaluate. I certainly wouldn’t expect more than 2-3, but it wouldn’t seem too surprising if things changed.

Personally, I wouldn’t need to much beyond the two civs being good and some balance patches to be happy with the new DLC. Hard to say what they’ll add.

You can just join the discord and then search “From: Tilanus” and it will show you all he has written in channels you can access.

It was a general discussion and among other included guidelines for how many locations a native group should be present on to make sense.

Also there are 9(?) in the game, the only really notably missing one to me is Stuart, but hannover would be present on almost the same maps.

Always been a sucker for Infinite Native cards.

Knights of the Mediterranean introduced the Ottomans, Germans and French new native units to add to their homecity weapons(Treaty mostly). Hope it touches the other civs too like Spain, Portugal and British in this regard.

Also
Since Denmark will be out. I assume they will have a fairly cool new Ship card.

One of the critters that could be added is the Great Auk, sadly its extinct nowdays but back in the day.

Considering Aurochs (also extinct) is in age of mythollogy it should be there to remind us of what happened
