THE UX Designer at Relic is Wrong about catering to wider audience

could be! we learned the English use a bow and I think that is unique.

I propose at any time for a wood cost can upgrade a villager into a militia (on a timer) and randomly get a weapon, bill hook, bow, flail, etc… so if you are not prepared can use a weak inefficient villager force, but they cant be turned back. So much better to be prepared. And maybe the cost of losing a vil (to hopefully save another) would not make the MM too OP like it can be in AOE3

I still can’t get over the fact that the units in AOE4 look so unrealistic compared to AOE2. They are way too cartoonish looking. If this was a sci-fi game then I wouldn’t care but this is supposed to be a historically accurate game.

There are 5 specific things making this game shallow/generic,

1- to much team colors, units are 1 color with almost no texture on it, they have to much of the team color on it and worse yet, colors are to bright, this can be easily fixed.
2- small buildings, entire community is aware of this already yet they don’t listen, ( ahh yes relic never listen)
3- No blood, no corpses made the game even more generic, so battles are missing that weight and realism, this also helps for people calling game cartoon/mobile
4- Water, cartoon ships and ships animation.
5- no crew on siege weapons ( this has been discussed for months yet Relic never changed it, so again they don’t listen)

If you fix those 5 things, you will have a very decent game since game play looks nice, but with all those 5 issues game loses a lot of immersion and presentation, in summary, Relic needs a good Art Director.

You say these are the 5 things that make the game “shallow/generic”, but none of them are even related to mechanics or strategy or how the game actually plays. They’re all purely aesthetics which some people like and some dislike. Of course it’s fine to dislike them, but I don’t see how that alone can make the game shallow/generic.

How can I play a game that looks shallow and generic ? What about UI? Those things can take away the immersion on game.

I can tell you that water looks much much better than AoE3 DE after they have tweaked it.

Because it is a fun game? You are refusing to even try the game just because it doesn’t “look pretty” the most ignorant type of gamer

It depends on the gameplay. For Example, I do really prefer Among Us over Battlefield 4 and 5.
Sure those have graphics, but Among Us is really an awesome hide-and-seek experience.

I’ll take this even further and say BF4 over BF5 due to gameplay. BF5 is better looking but BF4 is more fun

Why are you comparing those? Among us is a small indie game with no graphics requirement, AGE IV is not the first game, If you tell me age IV is the first age of empires then I won’t say anything, but we have already 3 games as a comparison point, even 4 with AOM, we should compare games in RTS genre.

Pay 60$ for among us…and compare it after…
Well…price is not the issue of the question. But it’s dump to compare among us with battlefield 5 and aoe4.
Check the game “Empires Apart” imagine it woud be aoe4, would u use the same argument?

Why are you calling him ignorant? Many people in the existing AOE community have voiced concerns about the graphics from the very beginning. Are they all ignorant, compared to you? Please don’t talk down to people who are voicing genuine concerns. Also, why would you assume tabletop didn’t try the beta, perhaps s/he has experienced the actual gameplay?

To be fair, “Because it is a fun game” does seem like an opinion held by many, but can’t we not give up ‘fun-ness’ for finesse? It does not have to be a tradeoff at that price and with this studio. For example, I’ll play WC3 for 10-20m ‘fun’ games, DOTA for 25-40 min ‘fun’ games, AOE2DE for 30-60 min ‘fun’ games, and Total War if I want to wreck my career. They are all very well-made games, and AOE4 will have to carve out a space in between, which I want it to.

I believe many RTS fans are coming from similar angles and we should rightly want to raise the bar for AOE.

Because he is refusing to play the game because of how it looks.

Yes but only a handful have said" I can’t play this because it doesn’t look pretty" Jimmy is one that has been very vocal but hasn’t outright refused it. He at least tried the beta.

I don’t when they are truly genuine.

Because they continue to discuss graphics which, if they were under the NDA, they would not be allowed to do.

They are allowed to because of the numerous clips we have already seen, lol

Lol, did no notice this comment, so why we buy video cards? Lest stick with integrated graphics then, why new doom looks awesome now? Why they bothered? Game looks is as important as gameplay…

You nailed it. It is like Disney hiring JJ Abrams to do the Star Wars sequels instead of George Lucas doing them. Relic copy and pasted AOE2 into AOE4 with no understanding or love of the game itself. I was going to say ‘slap on better graphics’ but the graphics are worse than I could have possibly imagined for 2021. AOE4 will be the disney prequels of the AOE franchise. The mistake was already made when Microsoft hired Relic. It is unfixable as long as Relic is in charge, as is obvious from the original poster’s posting.

I could be wrong (but not about the graphics), and I admit I didn’t play the game yet, I’m just going on publicly available information and my perception of Relic, and what the Ux Designer said in the OP. Lets hold out hope that the AOM remake will not be cancelled and that Microsoft will not hire Relic to handle that.

maybe play the game and see?
how can you say it’s copy paste?
The game has unique mechanics an it’s a very original game. I made this thread when the game was revealed first, but after playing beta, this post is irrelevant now.

When the rigth timing ever come, the team could maybe assemble a other beta.

Every one work separatly and dont have the full game picture or code.

Still love playing the beta.

Late it is… late it is…

I think your original post still has some merit. Although I think what this discussion is lacking now is some impetus for any dev to make some actual change.

The game was a lot of fun when I played it, but it was nowhere near good enough to buy for $60 imo, given I have the 2 franchise games which already contain most of the mechanics/ macro elements.

Everyone values their time differently ofcourse

What are you talking about? None of your responses are implied by what you have quoted.

That is not what ignorance means

We have every right to not buy a $60 AAA game because of how it looks, perhaps as adults we can actually value our time and money?

There is no evidence that it is not genuine, this is your assumption. No strawmen please

Read the NDA more carefully please. We are allowed to express our opinions and there is plenty public content out there as well.

Gus I think your other content on the forums have been helpful but please don’t make baseless attacks against good faith posts. Not all of us are rabidly attacking the game, some of us still want it to succeed

I think the problem is rather Microsoft than Relic.
After all as developer they have to do what MS does say.
