There was a time I typed 1000 lines of BASIC game code on an Atari 600 XL and then our dog run by which ejected the power plug from the outlet without all code being saved to a small tape recorder.

That dog apparently was extremely intelligent.

‘I would do it again in a minute.’

There are some things about developing new content civs or not. First as far as I know its different people who have to fix bugs and those who create new content. lts not resources taken from one place and put into another. But there is also the problem that AoE2 original code is so old now and during the years so much has been added that when they add smth new something else breaks down out of nowhere and noone is aware how it is even possible. That is why so much wierd bugs appear about things that have not been worked on recently. Also having these problems very hard to detect before release.

From competative stand point this situation is very annoying as new patches and updates are released just before or during major events. The organisers and players dont know if the new patch is even going to work well. Would Capture Age work on it, would it crash the game, would it give problems somewhere else. This all is before even considering any balance issues with a new content. That is why most tournaments are played on previous versions of the game quite often.

At the same time the new expansions have nothing but improwed the value of the game ever since HD. Even from competative stand point, balance is better than ever. It is the ongoing process of adding new stuff that breaks other things so for pro players it never feels we are at a state the game is fully functional. At the same time if you compare the game now and how it was on release the difference is huge.

What I think should be done is go back to the tradition of HD where each balance patch had a few weeks open beta before release so it is properly tested by annyone who wants. Just open a Beta for anyone who would like to try 10 days earlier that would give you time to fix most of the big problems that might occure. In case its new DLC and civs are involved open the Beta for those who preordered. There would be more than enough people who would gladly “test for you”. At the same time keep the matchmaking and ladders on the older version until the new one is ready to launch completely.
