We need a Chinese campaign. Which leader should it center on?

You wouldn’t fight other Japanese in an Imjin campaign, but Koreans and Chinese. Although I don’t think it would fit as a full Japanese campaign. Maybe it could work as a middle part in a campaign where you first conquer Japan as Toyotomi Hideyoshi then you go to Korea and in the end you fight the battle of Sekigahara. Like that you could have three different enemy civs

You would fight Chinese, Japonese and Koreans and have naval combat warranted. Its not the most varied thing, but its more varied than the Mongol invasions that really werent a great deal

Also theres some good campaigns in which you mostly fight your own civ.

Considering how rich Chinese history is, there are many great opportunities. I would love a campaign about Zheng He and made a proposal here (story spoilers).
Zheng He is interesting because he is one of few admirals who merit a campaign on their own with a strong naval and open-world focus (renaissance explorers like Vasco da Gama didn’t fight that much). This allows for varied gameplay with unusual mission objectives and interactions with many civs. Fighting pirates on sea and land, escorting diplomats, but also helping the Yongle emperor rise to power and fulfilling tasks to convince foreign powers could be featured in the campaign.

It comes abit too late in the time period. Also, we will need new super large ships. We need a Chinese campaign focussed on its inner Asian element. The Zheng He arc is already taken up in a way by the AOE3 Chinese campaign.

It being covered by the AoE 3 campaign is a different thing but it’s not too late for the time period at all. It’s pretty much the same time as Le Loi and we already have campaigns or battles over 100 years later. Sure, it would need some liberty in its historical accuracy but it could have a lot of different settings and mechanics.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying it has to be the Chinese campaign but I think it’s a decent option.

Too late for what? Zheng He was alive in the 14th/15th century, contemporary with Le Loi, Joan of Arc, and Jan Zizka. Definitely not too late for AoE2.

Some dramatic design is required for Zheng He, such as:
These voyages were secretly ordered by Yongle Emperor to find and assassinate the fugitive Jianwen Emperor, so in each scenario there would be some secondary objectives about tracking him down. Finally, when Zheng He found him and noticed that he had gone incognito and gained a peaceful life as an ordinary person, no longer disturbed by the power struggle in the palace and court, Zheng He instead decided to keep a secret for him to protect the rest of his life, as the last allegiance to this former emperor.

Well, I still prefer Yue Fei’s story. The navy is not the major feature of Chinese civilization in the game, and Zheng He’s voyages are indeed similar to AoE3.

Regarding Japanese, I am a staunch supporter of Yukimura Sanada.

A Wu Zetian campaign would make a lot of sense to me. A power-behind-the-throne story full of intrigue, with a broad spectrum of antagonists: the Koreans, Chinese rebellions, the Khitans (Mongols), and Turkic Khaganate, although it would kind of make sense for the Tibetans to be added as well (unlikely as that is).
