This thread is here basically to see whether you guys have any hope left for a proper treatment of our beloved game, or whether you guys think if all is lost…I really hope the 3 kingdoms get moved to chronicles and we get back on track…
Right, but it wasn’t meant so rigidly to move them straight to Battle of Greece chronicles, but more like to their own appropriate slot, which you also mentioned here
Oh, yeah, well, the lords of the west had also been released in january 2021, with all those gimmicky 1 time techs and special bonuses. Did we also move on, or did we get it fixed?
I’m Chinese, and I was originally looking forward to this DLC. But now, honestly, it’s more of an obsessive discomfort — in my view, the Three Kingdoms (Wei, Shu, Wu) have no place in the ranked civilization list, or even the standard multiplayer list. Their era and political structure simply don’t fit the context or framework of this game.
When Western Rome was added, I already felt it was a stretch. But I convinced myself to accept it — after all, the Huns invading Rome was a campaign in AoE2. If I can accept that my favorite AoE3 includes civilizations like the Aztecs and Incas, which barely made it past the opening lines of the historical timeline, or even the “spiritual successor” Mexico, then I suppose I can live with Western Rome, even though Italy is also in the game. I understand that Aztecs and Mexicans are fundamentally different, just as Western Rome and modern Italy are fundamentally different.
But I truly can’t accept the Three Kingdoms. Many have pointed this out already: they’re not civilizations, not even countries in the traditional sense — they’re three warlord factions. Even though each declared themselves as emperors and founded states, it was just like many other times in Chinese history (even up to the present with the PRC and ROC), where each claimed to be the legitimate “China.” In reality, they were fragmented regimes.
More importantly, there is zero debate about their ethnic and cultural identity — they were all Chinese. Putting these three factions side-by-side with “Chinese” in the civilization list just feels bizarre — like something out of a low-effort mod. Unless there’s a way to hide or disable these three “civilizations,” I honestly don’t feel like launching the game anymore.
Are you serious? Before the DLC release it’s “wait until the DLC is out and see what it’s like before hating”, and now it’s “DLC is out, it’s set in stone, move on!”
What is this BS? Basically “you must let World’s Edge’s poorly researched corporate decision and their minions in the player base to ruin your game without recourse, and you’ll welcome it”. Well, no. Wei shu and Wu fake “civs” can go to hell (or anywhere not ranked).
My prediction is if the game dies and revives again like before, they would be moved to Chronicles. If not, we’re stuck with them.
NGL, I do wish we get the same fate as AoM. The old Chinese DLC “Tale of the Dragon” was removed in AoMR and later added as a new/reworked “Immortal Pillars” DLC. Hopefully we will get a 3rd remake of this game in 2029 or 2039 and we will see those 3 kingdoms being replaced by Medieval civs.
Says the guy who only plays a freakin game without contributing to anything unlike those developers who created something for the game with the Chronicles and think they have every right to say anything just because there’s a DLC they don’t like. You’re the only worthless, pathetic, and slimy shitbag here, mate. Not the developers of the Chronicles.
Careful here, you have no idea who that person is or what they have done for the world/community.
I wouldn’t go as far as to insult the devs, but the point Zesty is making is there - they came up with unrelated stuff and released it. We are 25 years behind on campaigns for civs like Turks, Chinese or Japanese, and now we get 3 disappointing DLCs in a row, which have nothing to do with what we’ve been asking for for years - each pushing the boundaries nonsensically forward.
And I say this as a guy who’s made dozens of bugfixes for several games (witchers 2, 3, total war rome 2, attila etc) FOR FREE with hundreds of thousands of downloads…among other stuff which is irrelevant in this discussion
I can’t think of any possible scenario in which they get removed. 3K in ranked is not an accident or mistep. It was the goal all along.
And many people bought the DLC intending to play those kingdoms in ranked or at leaat not really caring. FE carried it away for weeks even with all the backlash from some players.
The loudest opposition can get is top players and tournaments boycotting 3K civs. But would guys who make a living out of the game like TheViper do that? Even then, worst case scenario is FE adjusting those civs and never doing the same again.
V&V as way worse for the majority of players and all they did was try to calm people with that “christmas tree” blog post (I’m still waiting for Santa…), some fixing plus a grand total of 1 (one) scenario added a year later.
Just their modus operandi.
PS: all this 3K drama is marketing paradise. Not only novelty marketing but also outrage marketing. Whatever happens people are engaged. Companies love that.
I really hope the 3 Kingdoms DLC gets branded as a “Chronicles”. It feels really separate from the “base” game, and its setting is too “ancient” for the medieval era. Plsu, the 3 chinese civs feel like they are of the same but wearing the same shirt.
THIS!!! Yeah, most of the time, we, the HaTeRs said to move it to chronicles, but, if its a brand onpy to CA work with, then make another one. Like “Fables/Novels”. Could be more fantasy oriented, whatever, just not in ranked and mixed with real civs.
Or when whoever got this brilliant idea gets out from WE and his substitute decides to fix some incongruences. When this person stays there, nothing is going to happen
