What if they created the same AOEIV in other times?

Age of Empires is a very well-crafted historical game, perhaps the best RTS game ever made.

The medieval theme is really cool because it involves several states that still exist today and it’s simply very rich.

But… there are other fantastic historical periods, before and after the Middle Ages.

I wonder, is there a possibility that Microsoft could create a new Age of Empires with the same engine as IV, but set in another historical period?

I dreamed of this game, an Age of Empires in antiquity with the primordial civilizations.

A game that starts in the Stone Age… and then evolves until it reaches the Bronze Age and later the Iron Age.

This game would include base civilizations like Egyptians, Greeks, Syrians, Babylonians, Persians, Israelites, Philistines, Hittites, Carthage and many others…

It would be a game based on ancient warfare combat.

With infantry wielding stone slingshots, chariots, the discovery of technologies like bronze and iron… and in the final imperial development, some civilizations would have heavy cavalry and siege weapons.

Although… I know, it’s just a silly dream… but anyway… it’s something that would interest me. I know that developing a franchise requires market research and it’s very difficult to create a new one from scratch.

But… the first Age of Empires was like that… even today the most explored periods in Age of Empires are the Middle Ages, the Age of Discovery, and the Colonial Age.

Another period that could be explored would be the 19th and 20th centuries. However, it wouldn’t be the same as “building an empire,” since in that period these societies had already been consolidated for centuries.

However, the modern periods, which include tanks, airplanes, and submarines, have not yet been explored, and it would be a very complex war.

So, Age of Empires, in its essence, is better established in the ancient and medieval periods.

What do you think of this? Which civilization and historical period would you like to play?

In theory, if you want an Age of Empires set in ancient times, you already have the first game (now available as a DLC for AoE2). And the closest thing to a contemporary‑era Age of Empires is Rise of Nations. There’s also the closest thing to a futuristic Age of Empires, Halo Wars.

But I get your point — hopefully they’ll surprise us and evolve the franchise instead of relying so heavily on Age of Empires II, because its fanbase can be… a bit intense.

I’d love to see a brand‑new Age of Empires with great graphics and meaningful new mechanics, something like AoE3’s Home City cards but set from the Industrial Revolution up to the end of the great empires (world war 1).

Dreaming is free.

An AoE game based on 19/20th century would be pretty interesting to have

Age Of Empire V, Are we going to keep buying more of the same?

Yes, it’s quite a topic… I would love to see a modern Age of Empires set in the 20th century, from the Belle Époque and WWI to the end of fossil fuels and the colonization of the Moon and Mars (1870/1914-2035)… The other option would be Antiquity (3000 BC-500 AD), but since we already have Age of Empires Online receiving new civilizations every 3 years, I don’t feel like I’m missing an Age of Empires set in Antiquity… although an Age of Empires Online with Unreal Engine 5, troops on the walls, landmarks, and photorealistic graphics would be fantastic… and well, a futuristic Age of Empires would be strange, but if they made it like Age of Empires 3 but with space colonies in the Solar System, it could work…

You’re forgetting the Empire Earth saga…it had both world wars, the Cold War in the American campaign of EE2, and obviously the futuristic campaigns of Novaya Russia and the UFAR in EE1, and also the American and Masai campaigns in EE2…

Yes, or as a last resort, an Age of Nations spinoff, then nobody would say “there are no empires in the 20th century” (which we know is false because empires fought in both world wars and the only republics were the USA and Latin America, the USSR and China)…
