Thinking about the context of better gameplay I would have the yellow and gray colors because of the “bonuses” these colors can give you in a match.
Yellow for sure 
In AOE1 I vote for brown. It’s a really special color, in AOE2, AOE3 and AOM you have no option to choose brown player color. In AOM you can’t even choose a player color at all without editing the game files.

AOE 2 DE have a brown color in the files, but it’s like disabled, you can replace it with another color for make it available in-game. Or give it to Gaia.
Honestly, any color other than blue. I really got tired of that color… Wish it would’ve been different in the definitive edition, as with AOE2DE, which has different colors for players inside the campings.
