What should Age of Empires IV improve?

Considering that they improved the textures and water details for AoEIV in Season 5 I believe it was, I don’t think we can rule out anything at this point. Who knows what more they have planned for upcoming major patches that we don’t know about and what the most likely soon to be announced DLC will offer us apart from new civs of course. Never say never.

If they’ll release a new DLC with new 4k texture for all models and weapons i’ll a Happy man

Last expansion gave us several civs that had fire mechanics (byzantine greek fire, shinobi sabotage, ayyubid fire projectiles). We use brush fires to slow attackers in the Sultans Ascend campaign as well. I would like to see more additions along those lines with future expansions, particularly with chemical weapons.

Historically chemical weapons have been around since antiquity. I’m thinking things like poison damage, area denial, temporary stealth fields. Poisoned coated arrows are already used by malians, so something that wouldn’t overlap existing civ identity. Sulfur dioxide was used in city sieges during the roman-persian wars, the Taino used ashes mixed with chili powder in ambushes against conquistadors. Quicklime was also used to blind enemy forces.

I think that kind of addition would add to gameplay, allows players to control the shape of a battle using area effects, and also give a unique flair to new civs. All while being historically accurate.

Do you think we’ll see a new DLC sono? Gamescom? I didn’t see any clues about that.

Returning to the innovations that I would like to see in a future title, I would like to focus again on the Total War style world map, because I believe that this addition would represent an absolutely new element for the series and would be well received

I made also some short video to show better the dynamic map:

Once you have moved your units on the map and attacked a target (which can be a city, a fortress, etc.) then a window opens asking if you want to fight the enemy and in this case a classic mission starts (a skirmish that can have different objectives) which also represents that specific region or that specific territory.

Think of a dynamic map of the ancient world, which the developers could update with future DLCs and with the addition of new civilizations: for example, with a DLC related to Alexander the Great, the Macedonians and the regions of Afghanistan and India, with brand new armies such as Indian warlords, war elephants and much more.

Once a certain amount of DLC was released you would have a giant map of the ancient world and several civilizations that you could lead from a small region until conquering the map, all through skirmishes or dedicated missions.

What publishers want today, including XBOX and Microsoft, is certainly sharing and hours spent on a game: the more hours spent on a title, the greater the success and the return (in terms of gamepass subscriptions or purchase of DLC all entire dedicated stores).

The fundamental thing is the care that the developers should dedicate to supporting the game.

But definitely an AOE title with a dynamic world map would be a perfect GAAS, in my opinion.

If I remember correctly, during an interview with Quinn Duffy, a well-known face from Relic Entertainment, he was asked if it would be possible to have a “dynamic campaign” mode seen in COH3 also for AOE4. The response was not negative.

It could be a real possibility.

The only negative aspect is that relating to Relic Entertainment.
We read that they recently went independent and unfortunately many developers were fired. This also affected the development of the console version of Company of Heroes 3 which was discontinued.

I find it hard to think that Relic will be behind the development of a new AOE for this very reason. So, we might not even have an AOE developed by them anymore.

Normally I would say that yes we might get a reveal or new news regarding the next DLC for AoE IV at this year’s Gamescom, but considering that AoM Retold is around the corner, they probably will want to focus on that and perhaps show us the all new Chinese pantheon most likely to the public for the first time.

For this reason, I believe that whenever the new DLC for AoE IV is revealed it’ll be different this time around and wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a later reveal close to December this time around with a release date early spring of 2025 to allow AoM Retold to get its spotlight and not overcrowd it.

As far as haven’t seen any clues or hints is nothing new as last time before announcing the Sultans DLC they were silent for a year’s time and everyone was wondering whether they have given up on the game, and then we were thankfully proven wrong. I could see a similar approach this time as well.

But I could be wrong, and they will show us something at Gamescom and that they don’t see a problem releasing the DLC so close to Retold. Time will tell!

And yet they’re the one building the game you took screenshots from, with the latest patch overhauling many aspects of CoH 3, including vehicle physics, mission design and more.

That said, I don’t think any of us know how many are still working on AoE IV. We can only hope that whoever is is given the time and resource to continue building on the game. I think a lot of people are waiting for the rest of the new Season, which we haven’t gotten yet.

I think myself and others have proposed similar in the past.

I really wish all the single player skirmish conquest games I’ve done in Age games over the years amounted to more than just skirmishes that only live for that brief match moment in time. You win, or lose… look at the post-game stats…and that’s that. You exit and start a new match. No weight or continuity between matches. No single-player offline ELO gain, no over-arching world map implications, no sense of the game meaning anything more than a glorified chess match. The board gets wiped clean and you just start anew.

I’d like to have the option to have more over-arching meaning and purpose to the single- player matches

We don’t know if Relic will update graphic textures and models with future patches (like Season V) or DLC.

But it’s a shame because many models are quite good but lack of detailed textures. I would like to see the same 4k textures seen for terrains and mountains which have been added with Season V. Also sea and water seem better.

What would be needed are new detailed textures for buildings and units and for weapons that look too plastic and it never changed since the game’s launch (except for their sizes)

As you can see there’s Historical accuracy on these models but low textures breake immersion.

My only hope is that the “photo mode” recently added by the same Relic is a test for upcoming new “zoom options” (something similar to AOE3de) and new graphic updated for models and buildings: i could imagine new graphic options as “ultra textures” (available only for high specs).

Yeah there was a big sea pass when they dropped the expansion I think.

I hope they’re testing for future improvements as well

I still miss a few things in AoE4.

Things that I find incredible in AoE2 that aren’t yet in AoE4:

1º) Maps with Ridiculous/Extra Giant/Colossal size. It doesn’t matter what it’s called, but I want to be able to play on a really big map. AoE4’s maps look small, perhaps because the buildings look bigger … but AoE2 has more map size options.

2º) We want to see maps with continental lands along with oceans. There are several types of cool maps in AoE2, where there are continents and lots of sea to explore. (I’m not talking about archipelagos, but large portions of land with oceans).

Obviously if there is a map with an “Extra Giant” size, it will work very well on continental maps with oceans. Something like a “map of the world” or with a focus on maps that remember the maritime expansions of: India, Portugal and Spain. I would like to experience this one day.

Last but not least… we want more biomes, wild animals, more color customization on the Flag and new civilizations.

Just tell us please
what are those?

More map size options for custom games would be nice.

AoE4 map sizes:
Micro: 102
Small: 126
Medium: 158
Large: 190
Gigantic: 222

AoE2 map sizes:
Tiny: 120
Small: 144
Medium: 168
Normal: 200
Large: 220
Huge: 240
Ludicrous: 480

Then AoE2 has some additional “hidden” map sizes you can enable when designing a map.

I’m guessing in AoE4 that for maps bigger than gigantic maps, performance could become a significant issue. There’s a lot more going on in an AoE4 map since it’s 3d.

I don’t know about 4’s buildings “looking bigger”, but functionally they are not bigger than in 2.

AoE 2 additionally allows to force certain map sizes within the script which is where the “Smallest [insert map name] ever” games T90 casted come from

Yeah, that’s one of these:

It’s 80x80. The rest are between the other sizes.

With 500 food (for a farm) it will be consumed in at least 10 minutes, if we assume that the transition to farms is after 15 or 20 minutes, after 25 or 30 minutes the farms should be replenished. Give some convincing argument for having unlimited farms!

Sheep do not have infinite food and are generated every so often, which must be invested in pastures. In addition, Mongolians do not have walls or keeps. Please give coherent arguments.

Buddy it was about replacing farms for wood like in aoe2. If mongols not have to spend more wood for pastures, this would be a HUGE buff for mongols not gonna lie.
