They can weaken it so that each pasture produces a limited number of sheep and that’s it, now you have another excuse
For who?
A: Players with older or slower hardware.
In which case, that is why Video/Graphics options are included in most any other video game for the past 2 or 3 decades… So individual users can customize the settings to suit their individual machine capabilities/needs.
The game was already looking a bit outdated, graphically, when it came out. Are they waiting for the 5- or 10-year anniversary to do an HD/DE release or something, to bring it up to more modern gaming graphical standards and charge for the upgrade?
There is so much unseen potential with AoE4’s graphics that I can’t help but notice and have it negatively impact my gameplay and view of the game.
Take online ranked games out of the equation. If that is the bottleneck, it shouldn’t prevent unranked, SP, and MP vs AI players from having better graphics and higher pop cap. If the concern is that MS servers can’t support such games, then let us play completely offline if it isn’t currently possible, or upgrade the servers
For how they list the minimum spec requirements.
They need the whole game to function at those specs, and obviously they would like to keep those specs as low as possible because that’s more people they can sell the game to.
Changing graphics settings to low is one thing, being unable to access content in the game is entirely another.
It has nothing to do with the servers.
An improvement on terrain features would be great for the meta and map design. Adding something to reduce unit movement speed, maybe even allow some units while prohibiting others?
Imagine a bog, infantry could move through at a reduced speed of 50% but cavalry and siege units would have to go around. Quick sand or snow banks could be used in biomes that a bog wouldn’t mesh with.
I like the simplicity of the terrain in aoe 4, but I feel like it would be improved by more depth and dimension.

Minimap, ressource bank, and all other important information in the SAME CORNER of the screen, global queue right over both of it.
Idk who had the idea to play the minimap in one corner and the ressources in the other, maybe someone who never played an rts before… -
Fix attack priority
https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe4/comments/prp3za/they_need_to_add_an_option_to_prioritize_units/
Probably someone who’s played quite a few.
For example SC2 and WC3 have them in opposite corners, bottom left and top right.
You mean these ancient rts from last 2 decades where screen resolution was so tiny that you were happy to have a UI at all while being able to see something of your screen still?
Yeah, makes absolute sense to compare this to aoe4.
Didn’t you recently like a modded Empire Earth 2 UI screenshot? Might have been in a Retold thread.
Point is, nothing wrong with drawing inspiration from the past. You do it all of the time with AoE III and that’s nearly 20 years old as well
Maybe, can’t remember.
I used to love and play EE1 as a teenager though.
Casually vs AI and the campaign, as I did not have access to internet yet back then.
Aoe3 was ahead of its time in every way.
UI, gameplay, graphics.
Like waaaay ahead of its time.
But we all know the story, Microsoft got too greedy and killed ES after aoe3.
After that move I did not believe in aoe4 ever coming.
And very honestly, for me personally aoe4 has not been made yet.
What we have right now is a budget console game which is a ripoff of aoe2 with very few aoe3/aom elements, but technically very poorly executed, with broken matchmaking, tons of hackers and cavalry that move and feel like weightless cardboard, no siege crews and no physics, no various biomes, failing attack-prio, a broken countersystem and civs that can’t defend vs maa age2.
They went completely out of the box with aoe3 in 2005 and it was the best “mistake” a dev studio has ever created in the triple AAA rts world.
Had 3DE not been overloaded with 1 million civs and 1 millions mercenaries, I’d still be playing it nonstop.
What ES did in 2005 was a brave, risky move and boy, the game was 10/10!
It baffles me until today, how it didn’t surpass aoe2 player numbers.
Probably the homecities having to be leveled up first before getting access to the good shipments annoyed new players in the pvp mode?
The user-interface in 3/3de is just a million times better than in other similar rts games like aoe4 (where the minimap and ress are oppsosite sides WTF), with the minimap, global queue, ressources, villager count and idle villagers tucked together.
Can’t understand why other games don’t bring that up.
Makes absolutely no sense to split the most important dynamic information, where it often depends on seconds or splitseconds of perceiving them, apart.
After the first Halo Wars actually.
That and the fact that AoE 3 was very demanding back in 2005 compared to AoE 2 and AoM on top of traditional RTS slowly starting to decline in popularity. AoE 2 came out in the “golden era” thus was always remembered as an instant classic.
Yeah, I couldn’t play AoM when it came out cuz potato but by 2004ish I had a new PC, and even that could barely play AoE3. I had to avoid water maps for years. The cannon physics blew my mind as well as the amount of detail. ES poured their heart and soul into AoE3 and it shows. That being said some questionable decisions hurt the game and I don’t shy away from pointing them out despite being my favorite. I do feel the game is underappreciated and the stigma will likely never go away. Sad.
The topic of AoE3 not surpassing AoE2 has been extensively discussed, with numerous factors contributing to the outcome. Meh, it is what it is, mass popularity for anything has never played a role in whether I like something or not.
Personal preferences aside, it is pretty cool that the Age franchise has produced quality games. We’re pretty lucky as AoE fans in that regard. As with anything in life, it’s all about accepting flaws while acknowledging the positives. I was pretty harsh on AoEIV when it came out and while my issues with it haven’t been addressed I find it quite enjoyable after getting back into it recently. AoEIV unlike, the DEs (I never liked AoE3s campaigns) has an opportunity to “correct” itself so I will choose to remain positive it can be the best game it can be because there are many aspects of it that deserve merit, and it is part of the AoE family.
If those issues aren’t addressed, it won’t hamper my enjoyment of the game just like the things I don’t like about AoE3 or any game for that matter. Would it be great if Siege was improved? Absolutely! But at the same time, I’ve learned to look past it and focus on the aspects I enjoy. I’ve never played a perfect game and I’m good with that.
Extends the production time of the Zhuge Nu
https://www.youtube.com/live/FwSa9r1oKto?si=joQOw9de8lBSoFr9
What makes the mangudai weak against archers is its disadvantageous production time, do the same with the Zhuge Nu, it is a broken unit
Please lock out hackers (disabling steam family sharing and permaban cheaters)
and make ranked lobbies anonymous…
People keep dodging in ranked because they can see who/what rank they are playing with and against.
Many people check the profile in lobby or check the enemies up on aoe4 world and then dodge the match.
Please, do something against that.
what do you think a future DLC could introduce for AOE4?
As you said, a potential 2025 release is a lot of time for a Xpack so i really hope they are going to upgrade the all graphic textures for models, buildings and weapons with also new animation and wheater effects and new gaming mode like dynamic campaign, the same seen into COH3.
Some updates to UI for a geater immersion could be really appreaciate too. But i think, we’ll simply see two new civilizations and a new campaign.
Assuming that the next DLC comes out early 2025, then I’d expect something similar with the last DLC but also have some more new stuff this time around, such as:
- Two entire new civilizations
- Four variant civilizations for the remaining 4 OG civs
- At least one new campaign
- New modes
- New maps
- New features
- Graphical upgrades can happen depending on their priorities & how long time they really have to work on this, as this probably require the most work out of all of this.

Maybe, just maybe, the game wasn’t for him if he disliked it so much. Static defenses and strategy with walls are a classic and core part of Age of Empire games. Repeatedly complaining about it because you prefer Starcraft-like games with no walls, is having the wrong expectation of Age games.
He realized this and moved on. Yet you’re parroting his words expecting this to change? Why do you think developers are going to listen to someone who never liked a CORE part of the game instead of people who DO like it?
If they did in fact remove defenses, I would quit. This is just not something they will ever change. Nor should they.
The fact that the tc in dark age and feudal age is the time of the strongest defense in game and the most difficult time to attack the enemy is a big problem.
Tc machine gun fires all light units down like butter and makes early counterplay very very very hard.
Attack prio is ###### ## on top, so you can’t fight anywhere near a tc with archers unless you use them as a meatshield and don’t mind 20 of them getting machine gunned down like within seconds like the soldiers of the D-Day without reaching any of the enemy units/villagers.
In aoe3 this was done a MILLION times better.
Even in amateur tournaments, feudal stone walls and stone towers are prohibited.
Because tournaments have time limits and walls can be abused in that way. Pro players cannot afford to not use every tool to their advantage. That is not the case for casual players. Casual games are not determined by some abstract time constraint by a tournament for watchability.
I’ve repeatedly said that Siege needs to be stronger to incentivize making it more often and sooner. However, the removal of walls or weakening them is NOT the correct way to deal with it. This is AoE, not SC or WC.
