What should Age of Empires IV improve?

A new unique cavalry unit ability that spawns an infantry unit when the cavalry unit expires. Ie horse archers becoming an archer or knights becoming a MAA or a horsemen becoming a spearman.

Hello, I believe it would be highly beneficial to enhance cross-platform compatibility between Game Pass and Steam—particularly in terms of save data, user history, profiles, and achievements. Ideally, users should be able to switch seamlessly between the two platforms without losing progress or functionality.

  • I want to see higher pop caps by default, or at least as an in-game option/mode. The ability to mod it in is nice but custom games are very sparse on multiplayer.
  • Rewind in replays. This seems pretty basic. I know the replays are stored in a format that might make this difficult but being unable to rewind is a big problem - makes analyzing games so painful if you miss the spot.
  • Ability to zoom in and out more. Why not? The engine already can handle it, we can rotate 360, why not allow a large zoom range?
  • Optional prettification - ragdolls, blood, more particle effects, more detailed shadows, birds and more varied animal life, destructible buildings and environments. Basically AOE3 looks a lot more alive in some respects, I know AOE4 keeps it a bit simpler so it’s easy to read while playing, so maybe these should be optional flourishes that pros/grinders could choose to play without

Killing main TC should start a countdown to reveal all other landmarks.

Many KT opponents try to hide keeps around the map when they are in a losing position, while I tend to enjoy hunting them down it would be nice to have an idea of where they are. This also applies to chinese, zhu xi, and mongol opponents.

I’m deeply frustrated and maybe I’ll make a post dedicated to this subject.

I have a friend who has an old computer and another with a bad internet connexion. The first occasionnaly experiences game crashes and the second often disconnects from the game.

When it occurs, the player is disconnected which is normal and soon after he is forfeit even if the game is paused. Whan he comes back, there is no option to join the ongoing game. The match is ruined for us all.

My most wanted update would allow them to come back when it occurs. Something so simple and essential that it should already be possible.

Yes, probably if they include Konnik as a UU of a Bulgarian variant civ for the Byzantines…

Yes, I think they’ll do it with DLCs and updates, but very slowly because they’re also focused on the Retold DLCs (they kind of can’t keep up with the developers they have and they just alternate the development of the games)…

What needs improving is that AI needs to start building walls.

I think we need to revisit the original variants. I’ve just made a long thread about it in the discussions detailing how we can better catch them up to the quality and conventions of the well-implemented variants. Check it out there!

Yep. Now AI is better than before,
Nevertheless it still has problems
Like making a lot of Ships on Small Ponds or so

1 - Vikings and Swedish / Norwegian armies should be added. Genuinely I would immediately purchase that DLC. Recreating the battle between Scandinavian Vikings & the English, just like Vikings: Valhalla (Netflix), it would really feel like a great addition.
2 - Pirates and Redcoats.
3 - And the Celts! Would be a great opportunity to add special characters to the teams too, like druids.

Well Vikings last from 800 AD to 1066 AD.
I know it is a popular one but, instead they gonna be delivered as Norway/Denmark/Sweden, all of three as individual civs or the Kalmar Union, a medieval and early modern era estate between all of them

Pirates and Redcoats I sincerely doubt. They should return to AoE III instead or make a new AoE game based on that time period.

Celts do not belong to game timespan, So I do not think they would be released after all. Instead they could release Irish, Scottish and Welsh

I always wanted to do a concept of all three, but I always had doubts about whether to do them in general as Nordic and have them become one of the three kingdoms, or all three separately, and how to handle the age shift, because Viking armies were very different from the medieval ones of the 13th and 16th centuries.

In my opinion, they could make one for the Norse-Scandinavians (Viking Age), and variants for the Norwegians, Danes, and Swedes:

  1. Norse (800-1050) The Scandinavian kingdoms from the time Ragnak Lobrok invaded England and after his death the Great Heathen Army, the Danelaw, was formed, until the end of the Viking Age, and the Christianization and separation of the three kingdoms. UU: Axeman raider, Huscarl, Shieldmaiden, Horseman raider, Jarl, Berserker, ulfhednar, Jomsviking swordsman, Jomsviking axe thrower.

  2. Norway (850-1397) They could retain their Berserker (Crusade of 1100), and these would be their kingdoms before the Kalmor Union. Specialists in gathering wood, game, and berries, they still have oxcarts.

  3. Danes (965-1536) The Danish kingdom was already more medieval, from Canute the Great to the end of the Kalmor Union. Experts in trade, they can hire Landskesnetes mercenaries.

  4. Swedes (970-1611) A more medieval army in composition, spanning several periods (like the Chinese) from the Viking Age, the Baltic Crusade, the Kalmor, and the Vasa. They can also rebel against the Vasa House itself (Double Revolution, like the Mexicans in AoE3).

Of course, No African-American Vikings, Netflix made that up.

Tudor, definitely Tudor (1485-1603).

One of the English variant concepts I came up with for the game era, but I was afraid they’d be too similar to the English. With the Lancasters revealed, my fears are gone.

  • Gunpowder-focused. Carabiner replaces the hand gunner. Red Coat as a special Landmark ā€œTudor Palaceā€ unit. Tudor Demilancer replaces Cavalry.

  • They would be Anglican in religion; they wouldn’t be able to build monasteries or monks, but Anglican abbots in urban centers. Relics would be kept in outposts and castles.

  • Great Debasement: You can get temporary Gold discounts (until merchants realize they’re being slashed) from landmark and technology effects.

  • Corsair Galleon replaces Carrack and can produce Pirates on the coast. It gains resources by destroying ships and buildings.

As far as I know, the Celts never created an empire, but there were several Celtic kingdoms in England and France prior to the Roman conquest; and they would have had druids. Their unique unit would be the War Chariot, a pasture invader and druids.

If you were referring to the Scots, they had already converted to Christianity by the time the game was released, so no druids.

Yes, the Kalmar Union could be a Viking/Danish variant…

Yes, we’ll have to wait for AoE 5 for that (and that’s if they follow the chronology of the saga, restarted in AoE Online in ancient times and continued in AoE 4 in the Middle Ages)…

Yes, something like Retold, but without mythic units and with landmarks…

Yes, I also thought the Tudors (or the Angevins) could be the first English variant, but Lancasters is fine…

Yes, the Celts appear in AoEO but they are prior to and concurrent with the Roman invasion (last year before the release of the Indians was released the Conquest of Britain DLC where in 5 missions you have to defend Londinium and the surrounding lands from Celtic attacks and another 5 where you have to help Boadicea in her Iceni rebellion against the Romans)…

Restore from replay feature. The competitive scene requires it!

Unpopular opinion: the competitive scene gets the most benefit from pretty much every patch and update this game receives.

Is there a chance we can get the kind of engagement from the devs that we had in the first few years of release? I’m thinking community events, fun factoids like the Sage of Empires posts of yore, or a roadmap with clear goals for the upcoming year? I think that stuff really helped give people a grounded sense of what to expect, a lot of the upset from the fanbase has been from the opaque communications over the last 2 years.

I will say, the communications in the patch notes and community posts are huge for the fans, more like that please!

Yes, and this Is the main reason why i don’t like AOE4 anymore. I’m waiting for more SP contents.

It would be cool if the upcoming DLC introduced a ā€œMap conquestā€ similar to Coh3 and Dark crusade.
