What should Age of Empires IV improve?

Yes, I’m going back to AoE 4 for the new civs, I play them for a bit and then I move on to other games…

another hot take, only competitive community really benefits from 90% of aoe4’s patches, as there’s little there besides balance patches nowadays particularly, but even at launch competitive balance took priority over critical fixes for gamebreaking exploits

Gonna be a bit out of subject compared to balance or add civs, but can that blue water be reworked? It’s so insanely ugly it looks like a placeholder.

It could be because of the lighting…since it’s indoors it seems darker…

Japanese walls just like in AOM Retold.

Also could we get a matchlock upgrade for all hand cannoneer units to all civs except for the ottomans, malians and rus?

ah the water painted to the roof instead of shader applying, also applies i think to japanese landmarks?

Hey, how about you guys improve transparency and communication?

Gamescom 2025 was insanely disrespectful in legitimately ignoring the main core concern that loomed all over 2025 throughout the first DLC and obviously after the second: the fact that players want NEW civilizations.

To ignore it so bluntly and just makes me sick to my stomach as someone who has tried to support this game and spread it to as many people as I can. It really feels like you guys do not care about your community at all.

No, it’s more than that. You don’t deserve your community when you consistently pull stunts like this, as if we are people to rip off cheaply rather than have an honest discussion with.

I did not get that impression at all. I think what you’re asking for is some kind of apology, or admission of wrong-doing. The problem here is that they really didn’t lie or mislead anyone. They just didn’t give some people what they want. They tried repeatedly to explain how what they were adding was significant enough to be considered unique and individual, even if it is just a variant.

They spent a good 5 minutes reassuring players that they see their passion, that they are doing their best to live up to the expectations that people have. More importantly, for as many people have issues and make it known on the forums, there are tens of thousands of people who do not post here.

They have open channels for people to leave feedback and take time to respond in Q&A sessions on discord channels and in other places. They have a booth at gamescom open to the public where lead devs are taking questions from people who are attending gamescom.

That being said, yeah I think we could use more communication. I don’t think you’ll get an apology or recognition of wrongdoing unless they don’t do what they promise they would do… Which ironically means that they are less likely to communicate, as they would not be making promises they could not keep.

A roadmap would be ideal for me, personally. It would give a clear set of expectations to have from them. Until then, expectations formed are kind of on the person making them.

I agree with you in the end
A roadmap is very much needed
In fact, RTS indie titles like The Scouring have one
Why the hell we do not have one for all AoE games?

I think it’s pretty clear. People asked for roadmaps in AOE3 for years all the way to the ditching.

The answer is simple: They don’t have one
They will announce immediately the moment they have it.

Oh, silly me. Here’s the roadmap for this year:

I suppose we can expect one next February, since that’s also when they released last year’s.

In no way was it disrespectful. Gamescom is basically an advertisement. They talked about the new stuff they’re adding to the game. Why would they do anything other than that?

Give Rus Abbey of Treanity Landmark a free monk when finished building, they can rush age 3 30seconds slower than civs like Zhu Xi but with this buff u could play this landmark too for fast relicts

Maybe, can you try to fix team lobby crashes at Xbox?

Yes, there used to be one, but then they started to leave it aside…

Of course, it’s strange that they don’t call it a roadmap…

Yes, they could release a roadmap every 6 months instead of once a year… but I’ll give a summary of this year’s roadmap and next:

2025:

March: Chinese for Retold (Immortal Pillars) and release on PS5

April: KoCaR for AoE 4 (Lancaster and Templars)

May: The Three Kingdoms for AoE 2 and release on PS5

September: Japanese for Retold (Heavenly Spear)

October: The Macedonian Chronicles DLC for AoE 2 and possibly the PC port of AoE Mobile

November: DotE for AoE 4 (all 4 variants) and release on PS5

2026:

March: Aztecs for Retold and release on Switch 2

April: TSR (The Silk Road) for AoE 4 (Russian, Ottoman, and Malian variants) (Novgorod, Seljuks, and Ghana/Songhai) (if it’s Ghana, it’ll have early versions of Malian units, and if it’s Songhai, it’ll probably be a more militaristic version of Mali)

May: A Mesoamerican/Andean DLC for AoE 2 and a Switch 2 release (Tlaxcalans, Muiscas, and Mapuches)

September: Incas for Retold

October: A Balkan or Medieval Asian DLC (now yes) for AoE 2

November: Aztecs, Incas, Spanish, and Vikings (now yes) for AoE 4 and a Switch 2 release…

Age of Empires 4 is still an incomplete and half baked game.
As we all knew and sadly could confirm there was a skeleton crew working maybe for about 2 years now? I have no hope at all on this game anymore. I don´t blame actual devs, i think they did what they could with an extremely minimal budget.
Personally I don´t care new civs at all if they don´t implemente anything of this first or at least at the same time:

  • Unit panel like ANY other RTS. At the very least, optimize unit selection. ENOUGH with selecting villagers one by one at the start of the game (it’s 2025 already).

  • Replay system that at least comes close to SC2’s (both in saving, searching for replays, and especially playback options like rewind, etc.).

  • Spectator system with notable improvements.

  • Accessible modding system that at least comes close to Age 2.

  • Match search system optimized, with reasonable search filters that actually WORK.

I´m pretty convinced we´ll never see any of this improvements. I really liked this game in the little time i played, it´s sad but i stoped playing when the last DLC. Why? Those variants were interesting but as i said i just wanted to see something that actually COMPLETE the game. All the things i mention are things AoE4 should have from the beginning.

If they actually did a roadmap like this many people wouldn’t be holding their the hatchet now.

That is frankly an insane statement at this point.

I’m sure we could all come up with a list of things we wish were in the game that aren’t (I have one), but not meeting your list does not make it “half baked” or “incomplete”.

作为一名菜鸟,我更希望加入和《神话时代》相同的右键点击可以自动训练单位的功能,以及磨坊自动铺一圈耕地的功能
As a rookie, I would like to add the same feature of right-clicking to automatically train units as in 《Age of Mythology》, as well as the mill to automatically pave a circle of farmland
