What should Age of Empires IV improve?

You have hotkeys man
What do you mean?

You are right, maybe itĀ“s not ā€œhalf bakedā€ but iĀ“m still convinced itĀ“s incomplete. All the things i put in the list are basic stuff for competitive. Things that have been done 8 or 10 years ago in Starcraft 2. And we all know they looked a lot of that specifically game when they designed Age 4. Why they didnĀ“t implement the best things? Why? We all know why. I donĀ“t think they ever will. Replay system, for example, which i thinkg itĀ“s critical that you canĀ“t rewind.

By the way, i“m not a blind hater player. I truly want to play Age 4, but i switched SC2 months ago and now i“m back to AoE2. Why? You can see for yourself that i“m not alone on my list.

Yeah, it’s not like it’s that hard to do that… other RTSs with smaller budgets (Stormgate for example) have it…

Yes, that would be good, although AoM’s AQE has always been controversial…

Me too, I’m playing AoM EE for the customs campaigns and AoE 2 for the rest…

It’s just every time I see someone say it’s ā€œincompleteā€ what they actually mean is it’s missing a few specific features from some other specific game they like.

Rewinding replays for example is something that MOST RTS do not have. Awesome that SC2 does, I’d love it here, but it’s not by any means standard.

i assume we’re talking about the selection display panel
which in this game has a portrait per unit with all units of the same type in 1 portrait with number of units in bottom right corner
and i assume your optimization involves an SCII or AOE2 like selection panel that gives each individual unit its own portrait with a healthbar?
that is smt many of us were asking for for years

Vortix es un gran jugador profesional espaƱol
En su video expone claras mejoras que el juego necesita
Sobre todo la latencia de entrada en las partidas

i’ll just mention that since the input latency happens to originate from the game engine, in this case essence, its never going to be fixed up

No it actually can happen.
Just know why Relic did not do it in the very beginning
You know on Skirmish you do not have the Input Lag issue

ye you do, its very noticable, i’m aware of farms and other things not being, but all other major inputs are

What issues have you found with farms?

none, they aren’t delayed, thats the only input thats instant

Well going back to the task in hand
Another thing that is very much needed now in AoE IV is debugging
There are so much sync error reports, crashes and stutters all way around

Hello Devsss!

Right now in team games, cavalry blobs—especially Knights, Hobelars, and Magadai—are overwhelmingly dominant. All it takes is a small hole in a wall, and suddenly you’re chasing an unstoppable deathball that either deletes your eco or forces you to run around the map endlessly.

The core problem is that there’s no snare mechanic to slow cavalry down once they’re engaged. Combine that with large map sizes, and the result is a miserable experience where cav can freely run circles around slower units. Against ranged cav like Magadai, it’s even worse—you’re chasing forever while they kite and shred everything.

For newer players, this feels completely demoralizing. Last night I played with two friends (both around Gold level), and one Mongol player with Magadai single-handedly destroyed their experience. I spent the entire game chasing Hobelars, they got run over, and by the end both said: ā€œThis isn’t fun, why would we play this again?ā€ Honestly, I couldn’t blame them.

This isn’t just balance—it’s about player retention. New players aren’t going to stick around if their ā€œteam gameā€ experience is just chasing cav for 30 minutes with no real counterplay. The game desperately needs either:

  • A snare mechanic to make cav catchable once engaged, or
  • Smaller maps to limit how much they can endlessly run around.

Without addressing this, team games will always feel lopsided and unfun, and that will keep the player base smaller than it should be.

What about to fix game crashes in Xbox?

In addition to ā€œcrashā€ improvements…

I’d like the developers to finally add:

  • a greater diversity of fauna according to each biome… where’s the zoo!!! lol
  • more colors to choose from for your civilization. I want to play with the Color Gray!!! There’s no excuse. If Age of Empires 2 DE can do it, do it in Age of Empires IV. It’s shameful that AoEIV loses out to AoE2DE in color options. They could also add black, in addition to gray, and maybe even something extra.
  • still regarding civilization colors… could players be given the option to customize and create different colors and intensities for their civilization?? This mechanic exists in Warhammer 40k Dawn of War.
  • why can’t they add a custom flag to the player’s profile so it appears on certain player buildings? This exists in the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War series of games. It’s impossible that Age of Empires IV, even using the same engine, doesn’t have the capability to do this?
  • Please, more colors and customizations for player profile flags.
  • Please, more variations for AI. New personality customization options for AI: —> aggressive, defensive, rusher, steamroller, counter-attacker. And I want some AI personalities that can build walls to defend themselves again. Because current AIs can’t build walls?? They adjust out of fear, making walls of varying sizes, whether wood or stone.

You don’t even need to look outside the series, AoE III DE has completely customisable colours for accessibility, through a colour picker. I changed the colours plenty of times just because I wanted to. Buuut it only works for you, not others.

That’s in Age of Mythology! They also added some more personalities, that would be a awesome thing to port to the other games of the series, along with the higher player cap. I made a post about this some time ago this year…

In my opinion, another important thing is the return of major campaigns.

We may never again see real footage from battlegrounds, drone footage, and experts explaining a particular type of weaponry. The reason: cost-cutting.

But the question is:
– Could we at least have AoE2-style campaigns, with a good narrative and plot, telling you about events as you progress through the story?

In my opinion, this would be a way to attract more people to buy. In addition to the new civilizations and variants, biomes, and maps, there would be a great narrative campaign like in AoE2.

Is that too much to ask?

Wow, there are incredible stories to be told and others to be retold:

  • Spanish vs. Aztecs and Spanish vs. Incas: are classics, but it’s always fun to revisit, especially with this new AoE4 engine.

  • Persian Campaign: Safavid Empire and the Unification of Persia

  • Timurid Campaign (Persian variant): Showing all the wars and victories, dominating Persia, battles against the Golden Horde, the Tughlaq Dynasty, and the Ottomans

  • Viking Campaign: This is a classic of invasions and barbarism. It could be told from the perspective of several famous leaders and their successors. It would be truly entertaining.

  • Chola Dynasty Campaign (Southern India): This is the best history of southern India. The Cholas fought hard for their territory and expanded their domains beyond India. They came to control a territory that included the southern Indian subcontinent, the Maldives, and part of Ceylon, reaching at one point as far north as the Ganges River and the Malay Archipelago, as well as other places along the Bay of Bengal. Basically it is a story that revolves around the father (Rajaraja I) who establishes the first domains and then the son (Rajendra I) manages to surpass his father, expanding the domains even further.
