What to do with the classic civs (Franks, Britons, Teutons....)?

Having Gold Shaft Mining make sense because they are a civilisation that needs to spend gold.
I would also:

  • remove the monks’ x2 range,
  • replace the Paladin with a unique upgrade,
  • Crenellations should also affect the knight line.

Yeah. It is almost useless. But one of the OG bonus.

Yep. Crusader Knight. With some twisting on stat. Maybe even whole knight line.

I suggested giving it to Franks.

What is Crusader Knight’s role?

In fact, I’ll go one step further: as far as I’m concerned, he could even replace Cavalier. It’s a bit like the Legionary in terms of mechanics.

Anti-Knight Knight

He’d probably need to be made a bit faster if he’s to be a Knight line upgrade?

This Crusader Knight should be quite different to their proposal. They should have high melee armor to fight paladin instead of high pierce armor. I believe that Teutons should remain weak vs cavalry archers.

Unit HP Pierce armour Tankiness
Cavalier 140 (120 + 20) 6 (2 + 4) 35 Arbalester shots
Elite Letis 150 (130 + 20) 6 ( 2 + 4) 37 Arbalester shots
Elite Boyar 150 (130 + 20) 7 (3 + 4) 50 Arbalester shots
Paladin 180 (160 + 20) 7 (3 + 4) 60 Arbalester shots
Savar 165 (145 + 20) 8 (4 + 4) 82.5 (83) Arbalester shots
Crusader Knight 175 (155 + 20) 6 (2 + 4) 43.5 (44) Arbalester shots

roughly

Edit. So the replacement should have -5 HP, -1 Pierce armour, the same attack (14), a reload time the same as the Savar’s, I imagine, and I’m not sure how much melee armour. It’s quicker and cheaper to research (because it incorporates the Cavalier and Paladin).

what does the crusader knight solve? Clearly there is an early game issue if the civ isn’t doing well on open maps

Folwarks is a German term. Teutons are German or would this be too oppressive if paired with such cheap farms

Of course the effect of the food siphon could be reduced to say 8% and a Pole bonus could be Folwarks pull in 25% more food (10% instead of 8)

E.Leitis have 1 base PA. 5 in total and takes only 30 Arbalester shot.

Yep. That’s why I think they should replace the whole Knight line.

I think the idea of replacing knights for the Teutons with Crusaders is silly:

from a historical prespective: Most knights in the HRE never went on a crusade, so why make all knights crusaders?
from a gameplay perspective: what does this achieve? Teuton knights are already fairly unique: being slower, tankier and conversion resistant. If this is just a visual change…fine. But should just be an official mod.

It’s like the Savars; they’re just a bit better at what they do. Or did you want the Savars as mod as well?

Maybe they can be just an additional unit then.

Keep the pace with newer and faster to get roll Cavalry civs - Lithuanians, Poles, Georgians, Wei.

I don’t want more and more powerful cavalry units released at this moment. At least not this year. Aoe2 is quite saturated with powerful cavalry units in recent years. Can some of newer cavalry civs lose husbandry like Teutons?

ideally…yes. Although Savar also comes with the benefit of being a cheaper and faster upgrade (although not massively so).

Also, Teuton knights are already “just a bit better at what they do”: conversion resistance and more armor. What does this propose change actually do?

Regarding any visual change: they should be togglable options or official mods.

in that case how is the role different from a knight?

how does an imperial age upgrade help with that? If you want to get a civ “faster to get rolling”, an imperial upgrade comes way too late.

That still doesn’t address HOW it fixes the issues of the Teutonic gameplay. The Teutons are hurt on maps like Arabia for some reason and giving the knight a UU replacement that now gets slaughtered by samurai isn’t gonna cut it

I think Savars vs Crusader Knights is a bit different.

For Persians, having paladins looked stupid. Like, really really stupid. But paladins with Teutons visually is fine, no issues.

I get that there are a lot of cool scenario editor models, but that does not mean all of them should be used in multiplayer. Like the ninja. I don’t want to see that thing in the Japanese tech tree.

If the issue is early game power perhaps Folwark could fix it? Maybe their Folwark doesn’t get as much instant food farm especially with farms so cheap but maybe it’s like 5% but still a Folwark otherwise. It would for Teutons technically be called a Vorwerk but still

That’s exactly what I wanted to say. Instead of replacing ‘Paladin’ with ‘Crusader’ (or any other name, I’m open to suggestions), we could have replaced the whole ‘Cavalier + Paladin’ phrase with something cheaper or quicker to develop.

And yet the Savar upgrade does help

And yet the Persian knights already had a +2 attack bonus against the archers. The role is the same.

it doesn’t help with “faster to get rolling”. it give the Persians a stronger end-game option (which Elephants were meant to be, but failed to be). Savar gives them a late imperial option. Something “to get them rolling” would be a dark age/feudal age bonus.

yes, but then Paladin to Savar changes were a significant change with respect HP and armor as well. So I ask again: your proposed change for Teutons of replacing the current Teuton cavalier/paladins with “crusader knights” comes with what stat changes? or is it purely a cosmetic change?

So nobody is gonna address the Folwark in the room? Or Vorkwerk as it would be called in its native tongue
