It feels to me like the old stereotype of Americans not understanding the difference between London and the UK. Stonehenge? In London. Nessie? In London, swimming down the Thames past the Royal Albert Hall, probably.
Meanwhile there’s absolutely tons of stuff in the UK that’s actually medieval and would have fit in perfectly.
True, although I think Chichester Cathedral is a really weird choice for the wonder. There are at least 10 English cathedrals I’d have chosen in preference to that (not mention various other significant churches). The Tower of London is a solid choice though, and looks great!
If they had brought the german castle they went to in previous editions it would have been at least fitting the game setting, but yeah very tone deaf to balance out their geberal lack of new architecture assets with this
We should also get a camel caravan unit. Camels carrying baggage without a trade cart attached to them. Something like the donkeys, and also for horses and oxen, llamas and elephants maybe too. Even human porters.
I’m not remember, my computer install just normal graphic, do not UHD. Ah have independent mod for UHD and unUHD. Love it. Anne HK do much cute mod, and dont broken the grephic, or scene.
I’m more familiar with Japanese castles, so my discussion focuses on the left one.
It has been modified quite beautifully. For being a Japanese castle, its gable ends and shachihoko are very well restored.
The verdigris-colored roof tiles seem to reference Osaka Castle; however, the Osaka Castle we see today was rebuilt in 1931 using copper tiles, which later developed the green patina. The original Osaka Castle, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, is said that had roof tiles covered in gold leaf to display wealth. Most Japanese castle tiles, by contrast, are gray-black traditionally.
A few key aspects that make it less accurate as a Japanese castle are the external balconies and the staircases that serve as entrance. I know these were from the original graphic.
As far as I know, Japanese castles, as defensive structures, would not have external balconies on their floors. Defending archers didn’t need such balconies; instead, they used windows and arrowslits (that is, yasama). Not many Japanese castles featured balconies, and in those cases, they were installed solely on the topmost floor of the tenshu (main keep), since that floor was the smallest one, used for observation and to house deities meant to protect against fires. In addition, the Japanese rarely paint castle railings red. Japanese castles are generally characterized by subdued, understated colors.
The staircase serving as entrance is the biggest mistake. I can never admit the original East Asian castle as a Japanese castle because of this. In Japanese castles, the entrance of keep often feature a door or a gate within its stone foundation, in some cases preceded by a short bridge. After entering through this door, one must ascend a narrow staircase inside the building to reach the upper floors, which have a larger interior space. The entire path is winding. For defensive purposes, the Japanese would never design an open staircase leading directly to the upper floors above the foundation.
I’ve seen this screenshot of a mod whose Japanese castle is extremely accurate. However, I think that level of precision is too idealized and would be difficult to achieve simply by modifying the original East Asian castle.
In the past, back in the HD, someone released a mod that at least replaced the staircase entrance with a proper doorway. Perhaps that could serve as a useful reference.
It’s got cleaner stonework, the arrowslits have been replaced with windows, plus two banners of St George have been added on the left. (I don’t really understand the rationale for these changes, since English castles did/do have arrowslits, and the banners, while not strictly anachronistic, are a bit misrepresentative I think.)
I personally like the red railings so I kept them as it is.
@SMUM15236 As @Apocalypso4826 said, it is changes with the wall texture, windows and English banners on wall. The original walls looked a bit too metallic to me for some reason. I have further done a bit more modification to remove that middle roof, which looked a bit cartoony to me.
@TommoChocolate Only arrowslits on walls are changed to windows, not on the top of the castle. So they still do have it. Its just modification for my own liking, there is no such rationale behind these changes.
@PeakHornet46539 Thanks for your suggestion on sharpening the little tower on top left wall texture of Chinese Castle in the other thread. I have fixed it. The collapsing graphics stays the same as vanilla. I have tried to maintain shape of the overall structures so that the snow, fire, garrison flags sync properly despite it being a non-data graphical reskin mod.
This castle looks fantastic! Adding the gate really brings it closer to an authentic Japanese castle.
The red-painted railings are indeed beautiful. The balconies with them remind me more of Shinto shrines, or Buddhist temples and palaces influenced by Tang-dynasty architecture of China. Japanese castles do not have wraparound balconies on floors other than the top level, but I feel this falls within the acceptable range of creative freedom for a game, since other castles can’t be perfectly reproduced either.
