What would we like to see for aoe2 in 2026?

Delete 3 Kingdoms from the base game. I’m not buying Khitanguts and Jurchens until that’s fixed.

then I’m still giving a negative review until:

They split Khitans and Tanguts + give proper languages to Khitans, Tanguts and Jurchens.

  • Some new things (such as a campaign with two narratives like the one the Muisca seem to be getting) but mostly traditional DLCs with architectures and gimmicks that avoid being clunky or pointless. Also please stop reducing the ammount of campaign content for DLC, this new one seems to be taking the right steps
  • Area appropiate artwork
  • Campaigns for old civs

Three Kingdoms Rework and rebrand

2 weeks later and I am 66% correct. Unknown Aoe4 civs can still be an American one. Although very unlikely.

Already happy for the new DLC tho hoping it won’t have anything related to 3 Kingdoms’ design with heroes and weird gimmicks.

Other than that:

  • More architecture sets (Especially Byzantines, Bulgarians, Georgians and Armenians) + fixing current ones.

  • Fixing 3 Kingdoms (Moving to a different category, Tibetan civ pls…Yes, I know it won’t be possible and fixing Khitans).

  • More campaigns especially for existing civs Like :Mayans, Turks, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese and even a Celts campaign that isn’t a boring tutorial.

  • More units for the editor like Hospitaller and Templar crusaders + dismounted versions of them, Generic/Euro genitour and a mounted crossbowman unit.

  • More editor items as usual.

  • An option to access hidden items in the editor like @duyhung2h ‘s Designers Dataset mod (sadly they didn’t updated it ever since RoR).

  • A color picker like AoE3DE and AoMR.

Still hoping Chronicles will have another DLC with Diadochi wars and a remade Pyrrhus part since RoR’s version now feels bland compared to Chronicles.

I’d like to see, in the vein of the AOE1 add-on within the AOE2 main menu, a AOE3 re-imagining - condensed to fit in the mould of AOE2, but with a few of it’s original features. I mean, that ain’t gonna happen as that would be a massive project, but I’d like a 2D version (I used to loooove the Cossacks: European War games) - 1500s-1800s would work nicely.

The AOE2 stance/formations would actually work a lot better with muskets than the weird ones we had in AOE3! Also allows World’s Edge to sidestep some of the things they felt uncomfortable about original! (no, I’m not salty about AOE3’s status, no sir, nope!)

AOE2’s more broader approach to civs would also work in favor with unit tech trees - AOE3 had a lot of ‘mystical East’ stuff for the Asian civs, when in fact things like Musketeers and Cannon were pretty much universal.

Looks like one of my wishes will come true in 2026 with the new DLC coming for South America.

1 down, 6 to go

My only disagreement with this is i’d rather see the mounted xbow be a regional cav archer replacement for most of the European civs that is playable in ranked. But beyond that I agree with most of your items here.

Since I only play custom-designed scenarios anyway, it wouldn’t matter to me whether regional generic units were only available in the editor or also in the tech trees. The latter would simply make my work easier.

Personally, I would be satisfied if these regional generic units were introduced into the game by visually reworking the “old” hero units. There’s a lot of potential in the existing datasets that just need a new look.

It’d be a great addition, but IMO a Southeast Asian civ—like the Khmers, the Burmese, or some kind of umbrella faction—would make more sense for AoE4. Something like that would fit better with the game’s current gameplay.

Why are we discussing AoE4 in AoE2 wishlist thread?

The Three Kingdoms moved to Chronicles. Khitans’ access to Cannon Galleon disabled because there’s no need for more than one civ that has the Cannon Galleon, but not the Galleon.

If it’s for civs like Teutons and Vikings (most West Europeans) then yes, but for civs like Magyars and Georgians it’s not needed when their cav archers already fit as they are already fine.

100% that’s what I was thinking, everything Germany and Italy west would get mounted Xbows, civs to the east would keep CA for the most part (I don’t know which Poles, Lith, and Slavs would get, and i’d think maybe mounted Xbow for Byz too, that one could be a toss-up though, suppose you could let them keep CA and say its Foederati…on the Foederati note, Romans probably also keep CA, and Goths too.

Checking the tech tree, i’m honestly shocked how many civs get CA…

I dug a bit more into Cavalry Archers. Currently the only civs to not get them are Aztecs, Bengalis, Dravidians, Gurjaras, Inca, Maya, and Wei. I think its also safe to say our new South American civs won’t get them. Ideally i’d like the following changes, based on some brief research:

Remove CA entirely from: Burmese, Ethiopians, Khmer, Malay, Malians.

Switch to Mounted Xbow for: Britons, Burgundians, Celts, Franks, Italians, Portuguese, Sicilians, Spanish, Teutons, Vikings (So generally my Germany/Italy and everything west of it line, those to the east all either used CA originally, or adopted it to counter people coming in off the Steppe. The Romans also used cav archers, similarly to counter the Parthians in the east primarily. If you want to base off the later W. Roman Empire you may add Rome to the “Remove entirely” list then.

The rest of the civs seem to have a pretty decent history of using cavalry archery as a tactic. (Honestly even Malay and the African civs used it a little bit, but it was rather uncommon and I want more civs to miss CA entirely tbh, that list is too short currently)

Actually, these civilizations have some really cool mechanics and units. They’re genuinely interesting. I think instead of discarding them, they should change their names and replace them with real Asian civilizations. The only problem for me is that they have ridiculous names, and they’re honestly not historically different from the Chinese.

Dude, the game already uses a lot of memory every day. What you’re suggesting will add at least 15 GB to the game’s storage.

I think the Wu suck, they are just so boring

The Wei and Shu just need some sprucing up alongside a rebrand and UU rework sure

  1. A civ called “Scanians” from the once Danish province in southern Sweden. UU could be a “snapphane”, gun powder unit with bayonet as aleternate attack, similar to fire lancers, but without bonus against mounted units.
  2. Remove fire lancers from the game.
  3. Remove genoise crossbows from the game.
  4. Nerf halbardiers.

Other than the impossible 3rd remake of the game, what I really want is addition of more Winged Hussar and Legionary/Savar like units starting with Militia Line.

I have already proposed Tarwal Swordsman for Bengalis and Dravidians which can be extended to rest of the 2 South Asian Civs. And I am a long time advocator of Heavy Swordsman replacing THS+Champion even for some of the European civs. And lastly Gallowglass for Celts.

Then Crusader Knight replacing Teutons Paladin, maybe even Cavalier is a very popular demand. Can also be extended even to the Sicilians. Black Guard Knight replacing Magyars Paladin is also have some voices. And I personally want more steppe related unit for Huns and Cumans replacing their Paladin.

You mean Talwar Sword?
