Yes, but they themselves said…“AoM Retold is our definitive edition of AoM” (obviously by definitive it means that they are going to start adding dlcs like crazy for AoM RT) starting next year…xd
tl;dr: it will be a remake not a remaster (remake means not only upgrading graphics and but also changes to gameplay and such), it will be in AoE3:DE engine.
I personally think that’s the right call even I hope this doesn’t block the possibility of an AoM2 in the future.
Remake also means there are really possibilities now to see changes to population, resources, balance, godpowers, myth units and gods which is I think great news. I highly doubt it will end up like WC3 reforged which in my opinion was more kind of a remaster anyway.
Not sure if that counts as remake.
AoE3DE is not a completely different engine almost all AoM features are likely still in the code.
I think that still counts as a remaster in my opinion.
It would have been stupid to not utilise all the improvements AoE3 and especially AoE3DE has done since. That was the big mistake of AoE1DE that it did not use the AoE2 engine, something that they are already correcting now.
I doubt it, but we’ll see…
What do you doubt? They confirmed remake as much as AoE3DE engine and you can research what remake means. I think both things are pretty hype
It would be awesome if AOM Retold could use the destructions animations from aoe 3 de.
This is very possible, since we now have confirmation that they use the same engine as 3DE and they said they rebuild all models.
It doesn’t really matter if you technically consider it a remaster or remake, does it.
If AoE3DE is a remaster, then is AoMR one too? AoM uses an earlier version of the same engine. If they didn’t change much between those games then most of the old code and so on will still work. So it would be considered a remaster.
But if some changes in AoE3(DE) are so big that they have to remake the whole campaign, for example cliffs working completely different in AoE3, then you could consider it a remake.
I would be disappointed it they didn’t do that.
They said it was going to be like a definitive edition, not necessarily a remake…
It’s a remake, not a remaster. It was confirmed that we are going to get new mechanics, new quality of life features, and reworked civs.
we might as well think of it as a reformulation of the original game or a half-AoM2.
I hope we get rid of settlements. That way we could get new god powers, bonuses, and new mechanics upon building the urban center. Stuff like free resources like in AoE2, or free crates/units like in AoE3. We could also get new modes and features that were removed from the vanilla game before release like a true nomad mode and arena mode, which would increase the type of maps in-game and more variety.
Ah, then it can be very great…
Big thanks for clarification/ explaining more understandable for the others. seems the guy in the video I posted and myself explained it not understandable enough.
Edit:
@MatM1996 as in the video I linked stated it’s officially confirmed that it’s a remake not a remaster
@Skadidesu ofc it kinda matters if it’s a remaster or remake. I mean wasn’t you the guy who was so concerned about what “retold” actually means? Also for explanation: a remaster is primarily only visually (like as far as I know most definitive editions). A remake is visually and with bigger changes to gameplay and stuff not only guys like me but also you recommended so I think that’s quite important to know.
Ok ok, i understand…it going to be a remaster…it’s amazing then…
I still am.
But I wouldn’t jump to a conclusion form the little things we know so far.
If they just rework the Chinese civilisation and god powers and almost everything else stays the same then I would consider it still a remaster.
It’s on the same engine (just a newer version) so that would be considered a remaster.
Remake implies that they remake everything from the ground up.
Remaking = making again. So not reusing code and things like that.
Remaster: uses the old game as a base and improve from there, usually graphics get changed the most.
Remake: not using the old game as a base but trying to recreate the same gameplay
Reboot: Game that is just inspired by the original game
We don’t know if they are going to remaster or remake the campaign.
We don’t know much at this point and we shouldn’t read too much into the few things that were said.
I’m personally think it’s likely somewhere between a remaster and remake but at the current point it’s impossible the tell if it’s more remaster or remake.
Considering they said the want to change the Chinese means it’s definitely not a reboot, because you don’t change thing in a reboot you start from scratch.
I’m hyped for AoMR either way. More so then for AoE1-3DE or even AoE4.
Yes, I think too that it’s a remaster, only using the 3 DE engine, visual and texture improvements here and there and little else… I see AoM RT as a 3 DE AoE, but with mythological units in the middle…
Did anyone mention sound?
I’d love for AOMRE to feature sound design somewhat akin to AoE4.
It always lowkey bothered me how awkwardly silent battles feel. AoE3DE did the same of mimicking the original in that aspect, but is it really that bad to add proper footsteps and battlesounds?
My number one hope is that it will support the same ‘ludicrous zoom’ feature that AOE3 does. WIthout this feature I cannot play, the default too zoomed in for me (btw I have a 85" screen so the farther I can zoom out the better, even farther than ludicrous zoom max zoom would be great).
My number two hope is that they will disallow building forts/castles/towers within a certain radius of the opponents starting TC, like they do in AOE 3. The way towers and forts are handled in AOE3 is PERFECT. I quit AOE2 because I was sick of being tower and castle dropped all of the time and I wanted to play with units, not buildings.
These two features are absolutely critical for me, I probably won’t play the game if these are not implemented.
I’m pretty sure they’re try to keep AoM: Retold as faithful to the original as possible.
As said in your thread a while ago - in AoE 2 you still play with units as castles aren’t that much of an issue.
Is that really an issue in AoM though? Defences are by far not as powerful as in AoE2.
The Fortress has less HP then a Town Centre.
I really hope it isn’t an issue. I thought I remember trying to play AOM online and the opponent spammed a bunch of forts and I quit playing.
