I really don’t like the style of AoEO.
Looks like it’s made for a small screen (mobile) and relies on strange proportions.
Just doesn’t look anywhere near the real thing.
I kinda wish they made an AoEODE that looks like AoE3DE (same engine I think) or how I imagine AoMR (also AoE3DE engine) will look like.
The game does really well on a computer screen its not a mobile game.
Honestly the game plays quite well once you get the flow of it. The cartoony look is part of the game’s charm and therefore makes the game a bit more timeless than realistic graphics.
All the DE version needs is to avoid the P2W money scalping.
Ok, that seems pretty tenuous to me. It feels to me like giving Romans a thunderstorm for their wonder because Jupiter was associated with thunder. I also think wonders should not be natural or mythological, and this is both!
It’s because of the cartoon aesthetic, they wanted to compete with facebook games like Farmville and since it’s an MMO, they also wanted to compete with World of Warcraft (remember that Warcraft is an RTS saga)…
Yes, AoM Retold is going to be like a more realistic version of AoEO (all three games use the Bang Engine)…

Visuals are always subjective.
Yeah it ages better but it did never look good in the first place in my opinion.
And “cartoon” look also suffers from things like low resolution textures.
The game was made in a time where 1080p was considered high resolution, not it’s on the lower end.
im honestly more disappointed in the fact that there are no new hero skins for AOE2 side of this, and the wonder just a reused version of colosseum
The same, with Project Celeste they add graphic fixes from time to time…
Does anyone know where I can download this mod? I found a different unique wonders mod by Jan dc, but I like the look of this one better.

AoE Heaven is the AoE1 equivalent to AoK Heaven. I think Heaven Games forums in general was the main forum for the Age of Empires franchise before Microsoft opened this forum we are now. There’s a lot a treasures there.

There’s a link “Unique Wonders Old Download Link” in the first post (the Unique Wonders mod from 2016 already posted here), the post was last edited in May 2023. Maybe the author never released a more recent mod?
Thanks! Unfortunately I can’t see many of the images in this thread – they’re on Imgur and I’m in the UK where that isn’t available. Maybe I can get around it with a VPN… I guess the images Mahazona posted were from this thread? Are there higher res versions? If so I could probably reconstruct the mod from those.
(I was considering trying to make my own mod, but I don’t have any experience creating graphics so it would be tricky. AoE1 is probably a relatively easy game to mod though.)
Can you view the images via Wayback Machine? For example, the Assyrian Wonder (zr1Mqk5.png). Change the filename to view the others.
The Wonder designs appear as a separate, lossless images. The composite image posted by Mahazona also includes the Return of Rome icons, unlike those in the AoEH thread.

You can try through a free proxy site, a bit clumsy to use but it works too. Useful if you only rarely need that.

EDIT: It only works if I type the image address as part of the web address – if I paste an imgur image’s address directly into the Wayback Machine, it redirects to imgur and then doesn’t work.
The reason is that entering it the latter way always leads to the latest snapshot taken by Wayback Machine, which is only a redirect to the imgur page rather than image itself in those cases (like when you try to access an image alone and its site prevents you from doing that). For the earliest snapshot, which is the image itself, you have to use the former method.
EDIT: It can also be much easier, it’s the thread’s first page in the Wayback Machine with working images. The imgur links under “Older 2D work” are functional, too.
