A little pre-order bonus could be unique skins for certain units or buildings, sort of like SC:RE did.
would be cool
It would be, although I think it would be a lot of work to try and lock those skins to pre-order only players. It would most likely be a modified graphics.drs that would then get leaked onto the internet, allowing everyone else to have the special skins after the game release

I think they could prevent that with the game being on Xbox live (like server needs to grant you permission to have skins active) but maybe something cooler is needed then haha.

I may do that if I’ll be able to play the beta or a demo before release. I don’t like buying stuff blindly because I always want to avoid buggy or badly performing games. Guess AoE DE will be just fine though, the system reqs indicate multithreading support so chances are it won’t stutter as badly as AoE2 HD can.
Did you play the first one? did you like it? (I am assuming yes, otherwise you wouldn’t be on the board…) So then excluding the potential for bugs (which are fixable), you know exactly what you’re getting into! Better graphics, farms you can walk through, smart unit movements, and a higher population limit to say the least… Personally I can’t wait. I agree about AOE2 HD though.

I highly commend them for not doing it. There’s only one edition with everything in it - as it should be.

Oh, sure, I played the original game a lot (never completed the campaigns though, for my 12 year old self deathmatch and the scenario editor was AoE1 :D), it’s just that I don’t like buying games blindly. Hell, these days you can burn yourself with a pre-order even if you buy a game from a company that usually puts out polished work: last month I pre-ordered StarCraft Remastered and then the game came out in a state that is very buggy compared to Blizzard standards. I put my campaign playthrough on hold because my options just reset to default every time I launched the game. Game’s been out for two weeks, still waiting for a fix… and we’re talking about Blizzard here.
Just did today)
Will wait)
Waiting for Beta to Pre-Order, but that’s very likely a formality. Can’t imagine them borking the game enough for me not to buy it.
I pre-ordered the game, and I even installed AoE Gold Edition on my computer, patched it up for HD, and no-CD fixes from myAbandonware. The hype is real. I can’t wait for the game to come out. I also got the soundtrack from iTunes.
I would buy the Definitive Editions of AoE II and III (please take into consideration if we also bought Steam DLCs - it would be an annoyance to re-purchase something I already bought).
Great job at Gamescom team and community
I never do that. I never be.
You don’t need no-CD fixes if you apply upatch afaik. Plus, it’s more like DE than original patched game
I don’t need a pro order bonus but a uniq2ue Pre-Order only unit would be cool not a Super powerful unit but something like oh i dunno longbow men or mounted lance nigts with a wedge formation attack

This isn’t AoE2. Those units don’t fit in AoE:DE at all, and the notion of putting unique units in for pre-orders is unbalanced and absolutely should not be done.

Back in the day, when game physically shipped, there was good merit in preordering, especially if you live in a village in nowhere 100km away from the next shop that has video games. With digital games, I preordered only twice, one was Overwatch as there was plenty of good detailed coverage and the release was to be around when the birth of my best friends first child was scheduled, so I did the purchasing before the chaos. The other one was Dawn of War 3 (yes, I like the game), and it was because of the open-beta the weekend right before release, so it was like pre-ordered around 48h before release.
But in general, it’s good to have the option to pre-order. It’s a rip-off to pre-purchase. (You can cancel the former) And the pre-order/purchase culture is laugably idiotic. “Look at me, I’m so good, I pay and get nothing but a promise based on adversiment without any grounded knowledge” is not something that you can brag with.

I have to disagree with the “laughably idiotic” part. Granted, Microsoft and Relic are reputable companies who do not necessarily need the support, but with games as they are these days the pre-order and beta phases allow for decision making on the producers part. That said, I preorder games I am interested in whether or not they have exclusives because I want the producer to know ahead of release that people like it, people will pay for it, and to allocate the appropriate care for the game that it deserves. For AoE:DE this shouldn’t be as much of an issue, but what if the hosting/networking for multiplayer hasn’t been fully worked out because they are unaware of the amount of people willing to play? Me giving up 19.99 is a small sacrifice for a game I’ll play anyway in order to push for better servers or maybe more patching and support in the long run.
Yes, indeed, we have to disagree. But you have a point. However, what you’re destribing is more on the generosity side than a benefit in blind pre-ordering. As for better service, I dunno, the most hyped and preordered games always seemed to be the unstablest und buggiest from my experiences. I’m more on the side of “show the devs they need to deliver otherwise there’s no money”.
Have you any examples of a game in which pre-oders improved the quality?

The issue here is that you really can’t give an example of games that were helped by pre-orders. We have no way of knowing - as for good games that I pre-ordered, I give you:
Witcher 3
MGSV
Shadow of Mordor
Hearts of Iron IV (this game’s reputation is…disputed, but I’ve put 400+ hrs into it so hey, got my money’s worth)
Shadow Warrior 2
Civilization VI (Once again disputed, but I’ve gotten 50+ hrs of multiplayer + countless others out of this game)
Chivalry series (MW and DW)
Total War: Attila & Warhammer (let’s ignore Rome II…)
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
And on, and on, and on. I pre-order because I can afford it and because I prefer to be able to pre-load the game and play it freely once it releases. I pre-ordered AoE:DE because I can afford it and because I want to be able to play it ASAP once it releases, and because I would’ve bought it regardless of what was said or done pre-premiere.
Screw pre-order exclusives, screw skins and promotional material. I pre-order because I’ll be buying the game regardless.

I’m well aware of the fact that there have been plenty of mistaked releases. MKX on PC comes to mind, too, as well as Arkham Knight.
My point isn’t that you should pre-order everything. My point is that for every 1 pre-order fiasco, 10 good games are released with pre-order support. It’s just how everything works nowadays, and that, if you pre-order and the game turns out to be broken, then that’s your fault - you’re the one giving the devs money before you play the game. But also, I have no issues with doing that myself.
As with all things, the best thing you can do is inform yourself and make an informed decision.
