I would have to say Persephone would be a shoo-in (TIL that this isn’t shoe in ). Maybe Hestia? Can anyone think of other potential/ strong candidates?
EDIT: Also, I think it unlikely Hera would become the other Mythic Age option, since Demeter and Zeus had a baby together… that would just be awkward. So I’m guessing Artemis, since Hephaestus has been used three times already.
Kinda feels Hestia is a possible future 5th major god. This way all 5 will be the first generation of olympians, and she is the first olympian so it’s fitting.
Iris, Pan, Persephone, Nike, Asclepius, Eris and Heb are all good candidates for minor gods IMO, and the choice will depend ok what godpowers or themes they want to cover.
Also they myth is kinda inconsistent- sometimes its Zeus, sometimes it’s Posidon who is having a horse as a child with her lol. So I don’t see a too big of a problem for Hera to be a minor here, but it depends on what gameolay they want Demeter to have. But no Hephestus he is everywhere!
My guess would be Persephone, Pan and Hestia.
But then, Hades without Persephone would be weird.
And since hades is base game, and Demeter ist DLC, you can’t just give Persephone to Hades for those who don’t have the DLC.
So what do we do? Not add Persephone at all, neither to Hades nor Demeter, nor any future God? Do something about Hades as he is, unless the DLC is added, in which case Persepphone is swapped in for another god non-dlc-hades players will still have access to? Meaning it will be a difference if you’re playing Hades with or without Demeter DLC, and you won’t know which Hades you’re facing in Multiplayer, until he ages up and picks either Persephone or the one she’s replacing for DLC users.
Or, what I think they’ll do: Give Persephone to Demeter, and Ignore the fact she’s also Hades’ wife, no matter how weird this is.
Just like they didn’t care about the inconsistencies with the Atlantis lore.
With no ingame explanation as to why Atlanteans start as being 100% Greek, no hint of any other culture or language, and then, ten years after FotT, during TnA, looking more like pseudo-Romans living in pseudo-Incan buildings and speaking an entirely different language.
Changing language, architecture, technology, everything, in just ten years, and coming up with all of it themselves, with no outside inspiration.
There was a reason for it in the original game, but that had to do with marketing, tech-stuff, not ingame lore.
The only reason it’s like that in Retold is nostalgia and nothing else.
So, it would only be fitting for them to just ignore the lore again.
I thought they might give us Persephone for free under Hades and Demeter and then treat us to a fourth minor god that exclusive to Demeter with the DLC? I know its a long shot, but I feel this would be the best option. I thought Pan immediately too, but he’d be super weird without Satyrs as MUs. So unless they create another kind of Satyr, it’ll be weird all round. They kinda painted themselves into a corner
I don’t think minor God options are that serious tbh. As a Set worshipper we can choose to worship Horus after all. So it is not something that they should limit themselves based upon. Having Persephone as a minor god option for Demeter is totally fine.
I would like Nike, Persephone and Hestia for minor god options along with Athena, Artemis and Hera.
I mean, you can. There is precedent in different games in the series at least; e.g. existing civs getting new regional units even without the DLC in Age of Empires II.
I think the safest bets for Demeter’s exclusive minor deities would be Hestia and Persephone. Hestia because she’s an important goddess and the daughter of Kronos and Rhea, who are yet to be included. Persephone because she’s Demeter’s daughter with Zeus and Hades’ wife. Regarding their technologies, Hestia might have something related to sacred fire, which could be an upgrade for buildings. Demeter and Persephone were the main goddesses associated with the Eleusinian Mysteries, very important in ancient Greece, so there could be a technology called “Eleusinian Mysteries” and a unit called “Hierophant,” who could be a special priest-hero.
Other possible candidates include Helios, Selene, Asclepius, Iris, Harmonia, and Pan.
As for Demeter’s heroes, I believe these could be Menelaus, Diomedes, Philoctetes (Archer), Agamemnon, and the Hierophant (a priest-hero who can empower like the Egyptians). Trojan heroes such as Hector and Paris (Archer) could also be included.
Why not? Yeah, why not.
If that’s the theme, it makes sense. It would be basically a skin.
Thing is, a unique fortress unit would still be needed.
That unit being called the amazonian was what I suggested.
If all human units are female, then the name makes little sense.
Horse mounted archer would make sense, even though what I initially thought would be a unit that works both as infantry and as archer, being able to swap from one mode to the other and back. Like certain myth units switch between walking and flying.
Either way, both ideas fit the theme.
I don’t know how much AoMR inherited from AoE3(DE) but in AoE3 basically all ranged units have a melee attack too that they automatically switch too when engaged in melee. This could work well for an AoM unit too.
Musketeers are the corner stone unit of AoE3 in my opinion and are one of the main reasons why the game feels so different. A strong ranged unit with bonus damage vs. cavalry in melee.
