Why calling the English civ "Britons" is historically inaccurate and disrespectful

That was the current devs by the way, the old devs gave them a German building for some reason. But they refuse to remove other unfitting buildings, like the Franks’ wonder (potentially based on a Bohemian cathedral), the Slavs’ wonder (a building from the 17th century picked only because it looked like another building that also doesn’t quite fit the timeline), and the Roman wonder (which was built way before AoE2’s time, despite the civ being supposed to represent latter Romans. Even Chronicles is guilty of this, with the Puru wonder having been built in the 700s.

There is Tatars in the game. Tatars is Turkic. However original Tatars were Mongolic (Some historians says original Tatars were Turkic too, some historians says they were mixed. I personally think they were Mongolic.) Neigbours of Mongols were calling all Mongolic tribes as Tatars. After Mongols conquered their neigbour Turkic tribes, this Turkic tribes were called as Tatars too. While original Tatars were dissolving among Mongols their name stayed for being used to call Turkic tribes.

I feel like there’s two ways to do it, either Saracen split but that would include Andalusians out of Spain, or you could do…I guess something that included Oghuz Turks for earlier era Turks with the current Turks civ being moreso Ottomans.

They could at least rework the three current Turkic civs (Turks, Tatars and Cumans) to be more consistent and not overlap so much.

By the way, when AoK was in development, the civ was originally called British. My guess is they changed it because that sounds too modern (since it’s a modern nationality) whereas Britons does not.

On a similar topic, I often see people request “Portuguese” to be renamed because the name sounds “too modern” even though the region was called Portugal longer than unified Spain has existed.
