Why is Age of Empires 1 so stagnant?

Yes, they could have made the game better from the beginning. They could have asked any of us here to know how they could have made the game better. On top of that, it was so badly bugged in the beginning for many players that a lot of players fled right away. And last but not least, this absurd “We’re not releasing it on Steam. We’re using it to market the MS store” thing. The fact that the game was shamefully taken care of later on was the final death blow.

I said similar things in another post. AOE1 DE had so many potentials, and expanding this game is even easier, but the devs seem to treat it as a “prequel of AOE2”, rather than “the first game of the AOE series”. They simply made it to show “we’re dedicated to this entire series instead of plunging into that one very game which makes more money”.
AOE3 plays very differently, has a different playerbase, and was released more recently. So it gets new contents and more frequent updates. Sadly AOE1 is largely considered as some sort of “a game very similar to AOE2 but unpolished” and many simply shifted to AOE2 despite the very different historical settings.

Age Of Empires: DE really needs an expansion (update). It was the only DE version that had no updates. The versions of AGE 2 and AGE 3 have been updated (new civilizations). Despite the divergence of which new civilizations would be, I believe that everyone would like to see new units and updates. Among these in my opinion: update of:
slinger
scout
camel rider
Land Trade: caravan unit - similar to the trade boat.
Units anti units:
Spearman (tool age) - anti-cavalry infantry (attack bonus versus mounted units).
Ram - siege unit, with melee attack, with attack bonus versus other siege units and buildings, but with little attack against other units.
and if possible other updates for units:
bronze age spearman;
Ram for the Iron Age;
chariot archer for iron age;
archer Elephant for the Iron Age;
Axeman for bronze age.
In addition to new technologies. Good ideas can be found in the Age of empires: beyond the indus project.

Except the roman building set everybody else has only 3 civis so the devs can add one more civi to each of the other build sets just with data work and it would still be balanced.

  • Babylonian = Parthian
  • East Asian = Xiongnu
  • Egyptian = Nubian
  • Greek = Seleucid

Seleucid would be more likely Macedonia
Nubian - I am not sure but I read it somewhere that current Egyptians are also Nubians.

Nubians are completely different from Egyptians when it comes to culture ,religion ,race and military ,where they do share similarities is in their building architecture, since both cultures were located in dessert environments, both cultures buildings consist of sand stone structures so yes they can share an architectural set , the Nubians even had pyramids ,although their pyramids were smaller with steeper angles .

In AOE2 DE there are already Nubian pyramids in game, they can easily just port those buildings over to AOE1de and make it a Nubian set, they will just have to add Nubian archers to the game…but then again they can add so much more to the game as well.

I am talking about in game Egyptian civ not in real life. Someone else said that and thats the reason why Egyptians have some units they otherwise shouldn’t have.

I wouldn’t mind if they add Kingdom of Kush or Nubians into a game as new civ.

Lunar events already out for AOE 3 DE and eventually for AoE 2 DE but nothing for the oldest brother. :unamused:

It seems the community around it is fairly stagnant too since the AoE: DE forum hasn’t changed a bit in a week.

AoE2: DE and AoE3: DE are both getting temporary cosmetic “mods” every now and then for events, yet AoE1: DE still has missing SHADOWS and is lacking ICONS for certain units of the base game (to say the least).

That bothers me a lot. Microsoft focuses more of its energy on temporary/unneeded/optional stuff rather than investing it in permanent/new/needed Age of Empires I: DE stuff :face_with_steam_from_nose:

I do appreciate all that they gift us in DE2 and DE3, I just wish the company in charge of DE1 will do the same .

The Age II and III communities generally engage around the new content and balance updates. As they are more frequent for those games, their communities have more subjects to discuss about.

Game feels old (no gates, unintuitive tech tree,…) and hasn’t such a big player base compared to the other titles in the franchise. Of course it would be nice if it would get new content and probably also attract new players with that, but it seems unlikely to happen.

sigh :disappointed_relieved: Unfortunately I think you are right.

Actually, the most depressing thing isn’t even the lack of new content for the game. Is the feeling of absolute carelessness of the devs with the community. They almost never, ever show up to inform us about anything, no matter how many threads and discussions we create about the same subjects.

If the game is not to ever have a new expansion any time soon, at least they should tell us that, so we can stop losing our time asking for it. But we can’t have even that, apparently.

I would like to hear from you. what ideas and suggestions would you have for a new expansion of Age of Empires 1: DE? between them: civilizations; units; technologies; new expansion name; ???

Who? The post’s author?

I would love to have them gift us region specific units, Egyptian soldiers and Chariots for only the Egyptians, Greco units only for the Greeks and Macidonians, racial correct soldiers for the Nubians and so on.

DLC Name: Promised Land.
Civs included:
Isrealites
Medianites
Kananites
Philistines
Nubians

I would add following things to AoE1

Visual Changes

All units get unique sprites. Right now some Late Iron Age units have the same sprites as the early Iron Age units.
Legions get a Tower Shield
Cataphracts look more like the Cataphract or Centurio from AoE2.
I would keep the Centurion and change the Phalanx and give them a round shield.
Heavy Horse Archers get some armour
So Round Shield is Early Iron and Tower is Late Iron like the Armour technologies.
Assyrians and Summersians get the Babylonian Architecture.
Cartage gets either Greek or Egyptian.
Macedonia gets Greek.
Every civilisation gets a unique wonder.

New Units

They won’t be available to all civilisations of course!

Tool Age Unit Upgrades

Every Tool Age Unit gets an Iron Age upgrade. No Bronze Age upgrade because they would be either way to good in Bronze Age or useless in Iron Age.

Battle Axeman Stats are similar to Broad Sword but higher attack compared to hit points. No armour.

Auxiliary Bowman Stats between Improved and Composite Bowman. Range of Improved but Attack and hit points of Composite.

Light Cavalry Same stats as Cavalry but no armour and higher line of sight and speed (can keep up with Heavy Horse Archer).

Bronze Age Unit Upgrades

Some Bronze Age units don’t get any Iron Age upgrades.

Camel Lancer Light and fast cavalry with attack bonus against cavalry. Will have the same speed as Palmyran Camel Riders now (their civilisation bonus will be changed to make them either cheaper or stronger)

Royal Chariot Archer More attack, range and hitpoints than the normal chariot archer. Has two horses and two man riding the chariot.

Recurved Bowman +1 Range and Attack and +10 hit points from Composite Bowman (Minoan bonus will be changed to +1 range for the complete line)

Caravan land trade unit. Slower and therefore less efficient than sea trade.

New Units

Spearman Starts in Bronze Age and has 1-2 Bronze Age and Iron Age each units. Has an attack bonus against cavalry and some bonus damage against chariots but not as much as the AoE2 version of this unit. It’s also not a trash unit and it costs gold. Only for civilisations with no good Phalanx.

Skirmisher (Peltast) is a ranged anti archer unit from Bronze and Iron age. Lower range than Archer but good Piercing Armour. Not a trash unit like in AoE2. Costs Gold and has decent base damage (the same as Archer units).

Ram Tool Age Barracks Unit. Two guy caring a log. Only strong against buildings and decent against siege units. Not very resistant against ranged attacks.
Perfect unit against tower rushes but struggles against late game towers, especially when they are behind walls. But they can still very helpful at destroying enemy towns in Iron Age.

Capped Ram Bronze and Iron Age Siege Workshop unit. Slower and more expensive than Ram but has good piercing armour. Can damage multiple close buildings like for example walls.

Balance Changes

Axeman and the new spearman don’t benefit from shield upgrades but the new Skirmishers do because they use shields and supposed to counter archers.

Hoplite line gets a bit less base Attack but some bonus against cavalry and 1 range (like the Inca unique unit Kamayuk in AoE2).

Buildings get more Hit points. Siege units get more damage against buildings.
Damage of tower increased.

Civilisation Boni need to be adjusted for the new stuff of course.
The idea is that every civilisation has one reliably unit to counter each Infantry, Cavalry and Archers.

Maybe add Stone or Gold cost to Town Centre (besides the first one) because 200 wood isn’t much more than a storage pit.

New Technologies

Bronze or Iron Age Technology to removes the stone cost (turns into wood instead) from Slingers

Bronze and Iron Age (And maybe Tool Age) upgrades for (Capped) Ram damage at the Storage Pit.

Bronze Age Technology to increase the population of every House and Town Centre to 5.

Iron Age Technology that gives AoE to Cataphract and Heavy Cavalry like the Byzantines in AoE2.

New Buildings

Gate yes.

New Civilisations

“Barbarians” architecture set

Celts
Germanic
Skythes

Indian Architecture set

Harappa
Vedic

Old Architecture Sets

Kananites (Israelites might be problematic)
Nubians

You made me realize that they didn’t even add a gate to DE…

wouldn’t you give Slinger any updates? on the lancer (junk unit) I would make it available at the age of the tool, to be an anti-cavalry unit for the first cavalry units. And an update for her to the Bronze Age. an update to Axeman for the bronze age that had +1 piercing armor and with a little HP than its predecessor (maybe +5 HP). The Ram I would make available in the Bronze Age (unit with melee attack with attack bonus against buildings and other siege units but weak against other units) perhaps with high piercing armor which would give resistance against archers and other siege units and towers. preferably civilizations that do not have elephants would have it. caravan - land trade unit I would give cavalry speed and an update for this in the Iron Age, but I don’t know a name for this update. but in general I loved your ideas.
