At my high elo 1100, I just need to wait between 1 and 3 min to find an opponent, so no the multiplayer is very active and surely not dead. I personaly love the game and think it’s the most fun game of all the Age of Empires series.
Warhammer nerd here!
The original Space Marine (which imo was a solid game, albeit mishandled by THQ before they went under) was a relatively niche TPS at the time. Dawn of War was a known RTS, but still relatively niche as well (Company of Heroes was a much better seller for Relic, and even CoH was smaller potatoes compared to ongoing RTS heavyweights).
I have no doubt the Warhammer setting provided some draw, but there really has to be a good game underneath it (which is the case for SM2, as well as Total War: Warhammer, even if the hero-centric direction put some old TW fans off a bit).
I think people are way too focused on the numbers for the game’s MP. AoM was always a more Singleplayer experience and that is where it’s strengths lie and where I believe development should be focused.
Yes, the ranked player numbers for AOMR are 3x that of AOE3DE, but that fails to take into account that players are ranked on the ladder for up to 30 days after their last game. All this tells us for certain is that AOMR has had 3x the number of ranked players as AOE3 in the last month. 30 days ago, per steamdb, AOM had over 2x the number of players than AOE3. Assuming there were a fair few people trying out AOMR using game pass shortly after release, that lines up.
If we look at steamdb numbers (yes, they don’t account for game pass or Microsoft store sales, but they are the only numbers we have), AOMR’s average player count is now 20% lower than AOE3DE, and daily peaks are now lower. If we look at the historical trend, AOM is about 10% higher than AOE3 at the same point post-release. Given that I really doubt the Microsoft sales vs steam sales/player counts are any different than AOE3, the only major difference would be Xbox console players (probably a very small minority) and game pass players (who tend to flirt through, check out a game and bounce), it’s probably safe to assume AOMR numbers are now lower than AOE3’s. (I really wish Microsoft would release numbers …)
This is expected; AOM legacy’s player numbers were persistently lower than AOE3 legacy. It makes sense that 3DE vs MR would maintain the pattern. Being around or even just below 3DE’s numbers isn’t bad, it’s actually pretty healthy; 3DE has gotten 4 civ DLCs with a 5th on the way.
Arena of the Gods and Immortal Pillars might change this, it might not. We shall see.
AoM was played much more pirated than AoE3 in its time and also didn’t get the support it deserved due to the release of AoE3.
It’s just not very difficult. You can join into the game, see the games being hosted/played from custom and there you can make your estimates (not campaigns or skirmish, it could be more). 20-25% are from Xbox aprox.
Here you can also make your estimates, from 1 month to now the drop in the number of players has been slight.
This is without taking into account that it still lacks content and without taking into account that it is not free to test.
oh how the tables have turned
Have a option to disable Wonders in custom games just like you can with Titans. Also have a new game mode that is playable both in custom games and ranked which is as followed:
Wonders start a victory count down timer.
God powers aren’t recastable only some Titan Powers are recastable a few times.
Autoqueue enabled by default for not just making villagers and fishing boats but also military units and ships.
No longer able to build Village Centers.
Lower villager build limit by 20%.
Caravans generate +50% gold when tasked to an allied Town Center, compared to the player’s Town Center.
I think that can get more people playing the game because you can have more options to play the game and with one of them allowing you to play it more like you had been for years with The Titans Expansion which is appealing to veteran players like me.
More profile icons would be nice to add to the game too like that person suggested.
Give ones for doing things just from playing the game like get Thor icon from winning a game when playing as Thor and a Sphinx icon from training a Sphinx in a game for examples.
I am surprised that it ever gets that close between Age of Mythology Retold and Age of Mythology Extended Edition.
The same deal happened with AOE3DE
Despite there being a new, supported, clearly better version of the game out, a large group of players clung to legacy and still do. AOE3 legacy is only going to wither out now that the ESO servers are dead.
They are still hanging there same numbers. I guess the remaining aoe3 legacy players don’t even play multiplayer anyway hahaha so closing the server has no impact. The server is dead long time ago everyone is on DE
There’s people who prefer the old voicelines, even if the original voiceactors are dead, even if some cultural consultants or narrative consultants think the voicelines are offensive in some way, and even if there were genuine good reasons to redo them, and genuine good reasons why they couldn’t match the quality of the earlier recordings. Whatever they may be.
Crappy looking “modern” UI
Cartoon graphics
Graphical glitches
Multiplayer lobby bugs
Missing triggers and functions in the editor
Missing multiplayer options like team shared resources and treaty
(Could take them 5 minutes to implement. I can never understand these features missing)
Continued broken multiplayer.
I can understand wanting to polish the Chinese dlc but they really should have postponed release another 6 months and we would have a better launch and sustained player base.
Much of this can still be fixed
6-9 months between major dlc is better for keeping active player base.
Fixing defensive nerfs
Yeah the graphics are not that good, everythings fine but the grass and nature looks very cartoony, models look really good though, but everything else looks very bland and not realistic enough, too cartoony
I will say, as far as the criticisms that AOE 4 had, the relic devs really implemented a lot of qol improvements after release.
I hope retold devs can do the same
You can add not having a “host rematch” button like in aoe3de.
I personally think AoM Retold is the best looking (3D) age game of them all. Especially the environment (grass etc) looks awesome. A good balanced mix between readability and aesthetics. In the end it’s a matter of taste.
Sorry bro but you are talking bulls…t
It’s an RTS game, a remake of an old game. There’s no need to make the graphics realistic because this isn’t GTA or Far Cry -.-
Graphics are subjective.
I think any other style would have had less fans then the current one.
A more “realistic” style would have made the people sad that wanted it to look closer the the original.
A more “cartoony” style would have made people unhappy that generally dislike this kinda style.
During the beta there was some feedback that the saturation of certain elements like the water was to low which they changed in the release version.
There will never be one style that everyone is perfectly happy with. And that doesn’t even take engine and hardware limitations into consideration.
While a small group of people like you don’t like how AoMR looks like the majority seems to be very happy with it.
There was not even 1% as many complaints in the forums, reviews and social media as the AoE4 graphics had before and after release.
People in this thread generally seem to think that whatever they dislike about the game must be what the majority dislikes.
I respect your opinion but I have my own, and numbers speak, if people love it why don’t they play it
Because there is very little content compared to any of the Definitive Editions.
Most people are not multiplayer people and even for those seeing the same 4 civilisations over and over again gets boring relatively quickly.
People seem to have very little complaints about the game compared to other titles, and of those complaints a small fraction is about graphics.
With AoE4 it was like 50% graphic on release.
I don’t think there in one single thing that makes people stop playing AoMR.
There is many small issues (comparable with what AoE2DE, AoE3DE or AoE4 still have right now) that all reduce player numbers a little bit.
Just because numbers go down doesn’t mean they go down because the one thing that you personally happen do dislike about the game.
