It’s that each AoM faction is like 3 European (by the Elder Gods), 2 American, 2 African or 2 Asian civs (aprox) and I would dare to say that the asymmetry of an Asian to a European in AoE3 is somewhat less than comparing Greeks and Egyptians, for example.
I prefer not to comment on the balance of AoE3, because although the devs try hard to control it, the complexity of having many civs and game elements makes it almost impossible to balance.
I hope they do a rework to the Chinese, they take their time and I hope it comes out for free. If they have 4 factions (12 sub factions) well done to start with, it will be fine.
I mean I’m all for supporting developers, but I really don’t understand this level of defending them in a very obvious topic
aoe2de released with 4 new civs on top of all the previous content
aoe3de did the same but with 2 new civs
now aom is by far the most difficult game in the series to make new civs for because of how unrelated the civs are to each other, but to not even bother to redesign a civ that was already in the game for the release version, is something completely different, and in my opinion unacceptable
with all that being said, is this a deal breaker and does it stop someone like me from buying the game on release and enjoying the heck out of the game? absolutely not
but to pretend like it was a good decision to release Chinese on a later date is just outright a wrong take. they announced the game almost a year and a half ago, if Microsoft cared enough to give them enough resources, they should definitely be able to redesign Chinese as well for a late 2024 release. but I think just like any other game in this series, the developers are limited to the resources Microsoft is willing to give them. so if anyone is to blame for this weird cut-out content, it’s Microsoft, not the devs.
at this rate, I’m just hoping they are not going to charge people for Chinese when it comes out. you don’t fix your mistake by charging for the fix

Of course it would be amazing to see chinese (and aztec) in the release version…
We still don’t know 100% if they won’t come at release but we can be 100% sure Chinese will come.
I think you can’t 100% compare it to the other DEs. Cause 1. It’s at least a bit more than a DE and 2. it’s unfair regarding the high effort the studio seems to put in.
I might be totally wrong but I personally assume cause of the community/fan feedback and some unexpected plans AoMRe got more complex and a bigger project than expected. That’s why they pushed new civs behind. And we still don’t know the complete scope of Retold. Maybe we will see complete new units/buildings/gods/upgrades? we saw the most familiar things at the moment I think. Maybe to get diehard nostalgic oldschoolers not scared away. I never played AoM competitive or in multiplayer (yet) but I played it the first time around 2002/3 and I am quite open for new stuff and changes, new bold ideas. But I can’t say this for everyone some want to stick with the total familiar things. And I partly understand that. Maybe they want give Chinese justice and it’s mythology the attention it deserves.
Also! Chinese is not in Arkantos campaign so I think retold they wanted to address primary the story and civs around Arkantos campaign.
Chinese would feel not connected campaign wise. And I would totally understand if they are scared of to implement Chinese into the Arkantos campaign without maybe screwing thinks over and getting rants of nostalgic players. And would agree here it’s better to not mix Chinese into the old campaigns. Maybe they want to make Chinese connected to the old campaigns but time will tell.
