Yue Fei's Legacy

I’ve been asking them to rename ZXL to Jin for the longest time, and I’m so happy to see effort to realize the actual Jin Dynasty. The addition of a new variant civilization in this story based DLC in addition to two new biomes is very surprising and I am happy to see the direction AoE4 is going in.

Landmarks are looking sick!

Horsies. Maybe new fauna? Or part of this civilization.

I think there is something wrong with their normals. Same with the reindeer.

I’m happy to see the Iron Pagoda but I have to admit I’m disappointed they chose to use the material Keshiks use for their armour, as it is one of the flattest and ugliest sets of “lamellar” (loosk more like scale) in the game. Basically, they are scaled too big and have no depth, and in the picture above, you can see some issues with it.

In the first image you can see how the normals are flipped. The upper parts are in shadow, while the nooks are lit up. To the right you can contrast it to the Torguud whose armour is far more convincing, albeit a different colour. At least they are wielding a two handed weapon, which will feature new animations for mounted two-handed fighting!

The recolour of the buildings to a more earthy tone to match the stonework of the Jin and their early Buddhist pagodas is a really nice touch. In particular I am happy to see them having recoloured their walls as well as Keeps.

However, it is difficult to gauge in the images and videos whether the gold seems a bit too specular. Very shiny which is not at all AoE4’s style. This might be an overcorrection to criticism in the past saying metal looked too matte. The red in buildings also seems a bit strong, but this might just be the videos.

European sword? Flag bearing unit seems cool. And I wonder what is wrong with this nest of bees?

I’m sad we didn’t get custom fences for our TC like in the OG concept art.

New music makes this civilization feel a whole lot more like a real one, especially with the new landmarks and the recolours, even baseline units seem mostly different. This is great.

Is this a new tech tree?

Yellow River and Madagascar biomes. Madagascar seems to be an interesting pick.

While we’re here, aren’t the “rail” parts of fences suppoused to be on the inside? Every civilization in the game has this wrong. Someone correct me cause I’m pretty sure all fences for TCs in the game have been flipped since beta.

I’d rather see Liao Dynasty.

They look like Turk and Mongols tho

I think Jin have their rightful place in a game like this. They’re of the same ilk that became the Qing, and have had a large influence in history shaping much of modern day China too. I’m glad to see AoE4, which already features the Jin in the OG campaign, take their time to actually explore them proper.

It’s a bit expensive, but it’s an instant buy! What 3K should have been.

I still hope for actual Chinese, Jurchens, Khitans (Tanguts) and Koreans campaigns in AoE2.

They are the Jurchens, not the Chinese. The Jurchens are a Tungusic people, a completely different ethnic group from the Chinese. Just because someone lives in an East Asian-style tiled house does not mean they are Chinese. Could you consider the British and Italians to be the same people simply because they live in the same Europe?

Furthermore, it seems many people have trouble reading “All New Civilization: the Jin Dynasty.” It is not a variant civilization of China, but a distinct new civilization.

For such a passive aggressive comment you seem to be targeting the air, as nobody above has made the point that they are Chinese as you are so desperately clarifying. And mind you, you’re also wrong in the last bit. It doesn’t matter what the developers call the civilization, it still overwhelmingly is utilizing Chinese assets. Villager models, buildings, walls.

Sure, they’ve taken many steps to make it feel distinct and new, but it is ultimately not a new baseline civilization. New custom models for landmarks, music and new units goes a long way, but it is still built on an existing 3D asset corpus which is cutting corners. If you ask me, they should’ve just gone the full way. As long as they don’t, it will be a variant in my eyes.

Where can I listen to the music of the Jin Dynasty civilization? I couldn’t find it on the official page.

Thank you so much. The new music blends Central Plains (中原) and steppe styles, sounds quite good.

It is clear that you have written it as a variant civilization of Chinese, at first paragraph.

Please read this aloud and clearly yourself, Three times,
“All New Civilization: the Jin Dynasty”
“All New Civilization: the Jin Dynasty”
“All New Civilization: the Jin Dynasty”

Yes indeed, very exciting. 3 new civs this year?

Unfortunately like I said, it doesn’t matter what they call it at the pressure of AoE4 content creators begging them to not use the term variant anymore.

It is reusing critical assets, which makes it a variant.

Bro actually this one nearly a new civ i liked this one.

Yea I dig it a lot more than the other variants, it is a step in the right direction.

But, that is the funny thing. The “right” direction is just making a new civilization fully. Every positive I can list is because they are inching closer to that.

Isn’t it a variant civilization?

Finally a new tech tree i hope it shows unit stats too not only the cost.
