What civilization is played during Yue Fei campaign? Main Chinese?

Well, at least the landmark in the trailer (Astronomical Clocktower) looks like China’s will be the main civilization.

However, we all know that China, as a multiplayer and skirmish mode civilization, relies heavily on the Dynasty system, which I don’t think can be applied to the campaign that takes place before the Yuan (1271–1368>) and Ming dynasties (1368-1644).

In that case, I think they’ll give the campaign civilization “new” additions so you can fight comfortably, just like the Ayyubids from the campaign who had Turk Horse Archers and other technologies for the House of Learning and the Docks.

And well, maybe they’ll even consider giving the main Chinese civilization new unique units, technologies, and options, hehe.

I think it’s a common mistake due to the initial impression of some screenshots, where it was seen that the Jin also had the Bee Nest, as in this image below.

So, because they share a unique unit, it was believed that they were a variant. And well, it was confirmed that they are not, by the developers themselves.

It’s a new civilization, and it will possibly also have a new language (Jurchen or Old Mandarin) for unit voices. It might even have a unique theme song.

Another thing, it seems that what’s really happening is that the Beehive will no longer be exclusive to China, but will become a regional unit, replacing Mangonel for many civilizations in that region.

Which is good, since it will set a precedent for not having to force variants if one civilization has a unique unit shared with another; there can be regional units, like in Age of Empires II.

Now, potential “Korean” civilizations in the future will be able to have their own unique Beehive (Hwacha) without much trouble.


Wait, Traction Trebushet also become a normal Siege Unit???

Yes, among other discoveries, it seems the Jurchen don’t have Counterweight Trebuchets, because historically, they didn’t have them. In fact, the Mongols acquired Traction Trebuchets from the Jin Dynasty, so it makes sense that they would have them too.

This is curious; perhaps it could be done that many civilizations that ended before 1250 have traction trebuchets instead of counterweights, like the Macedonian Dynasty in the trailers, or the Japanese and Sengoku (who never got Counterweight Trebuchets, hehehe, time to give them a serious rebalancing).

And well, the precedent for this would also be the same as why some civilizations have Bombardas and others instead Culverins. So, in a future, some civs gonna have traction trebs, an other Counterweights, jeje.

New to this particular game, why haven’t they got a civ for the song dynasty, you know the ones we play as in the campaign?

Jin is fine but to not have both sides of the battle as full civs is a weird choice, yes they are basically in the Chinese civ but why not separate them now this dlc is out?

£12.99 in the uk is abit high for what you get really

Most Archery ranges have a T-shaped building with one tower, four targets, and one bench. Most Stables have a hay storage of the same design. By your logic, AOE4 might actually be a game where there is only one civilization, and 22 variations of it.

On the price: I agree that it is a bit steep for just a campaign and civ, or at least when compared to previous DLC releases. I was expecting a campaign module and maybe a variant, so they’ve announced more than I expected, but I’m greedy enough to expect more unannounced features. Similar to the sheep and berry bush variation, or the points of interest.

I guess they might have some surprise change for Chinese, but it will be campaign only (changing dynasty system with something new, maybe some miscellaneous tech before AoE4 release? I don’t know) , not sure if they will making change on skirmishes/ranked civ.

If they have surprise change for campaign/ranked, dynasty system could be a good way to change Chinese civ.

Designer might wanna focus on the succession of dynasties (which Jin don’t have), so there might be some new tech in Spirit Way / Zhuxi’s Library (for example, get all dynasty bonus by research tech, such like this).

To my knowledge, not a single Chinese player likes this DLC.

Maybe true, cuz the Chinese DLC of AoE2 gave us Jurchen and Khitan, but the campaign released is about 3k, for some chineses this is kinda like rickroll.

But others are quite aware of this brand new DLC, for thats the campaign they wanna play in AoE2.

By my logic? My logic is that of service exchange. I pay them for a new experience, meaning the full deal.

Guess what is the most expensive part of making a civilization? No, it isn’t recolours. No, it isn’t kit bashing (combining existing unit models). No, it isn’t reusing the same voice lines and neither is it designing mechanics to program into the game.

The most expensive part by far is hiring an external company to model your houses for every age, your TCs, Keeps, walls, docks, production buildings and making new humanoid models from scratch. That and adding the hundreds of new voice lines that AoE4 does.

In a way, this new DLC has done a great disservice to the Jin by not bothering with any of this, because they DID have unique architecture and a Tangut based language that vastly differs from Chinese languages.

So YES, this IS a variant despite the developers caving in to the likes of Beastyqy, Aussiedrongo, Killerpigeon and others whose livelihood hinged on AoE surviving by making the most sales.

They’ve cut out the biggest cost and the most important part of making a civilization out of the equation.

Imagine you buy a hot dog and it has no sausage. Like stop kidding yourself, we are on the same side. The developers are screwing us over every time they decide to not put in the effort needed to make an actual new civilization.

Tell me then. If this is a “new civilization”, then what will these Vikings be? Are they “new civilization +”? Because even the developers admit there is a distinction.

By denying that the Jin is not a variant, they are doing customers a great disservice and tricking those who don’t pay attention before they purchase.

No Chinese person likes the Jin Dynasty, and the Jin Dynasty involved a great deal of cultural appropriation. It was an extinct civilization. The official statement claims to be creating a Chinese-themed campaign, but the variant civilization is indeed the Jin Dynasty.

The Jin Dynasty, is, factually, a part of Chinese history. I understand that it might be an unpopular time period to visit for some, but that doesn’t make it “not Chinese” anymore than Charles II doesn’t stop being an English king because he was a bit of a dunderhead.

“extinct” meaning what, what is the problem with “extinct”?

The Jin Dynasty are the precursor to the Qing that would rule ALL of China and make it larger than it had been before. The Jurchens are an incredibly important people, Tangut peoples are in general very underrepresented in media for the impact they have had. The cultural region of the north east that conjured civilizations of such dramatic influence is a great place to learn about and to explore.

Whether it be the ancestors to Koreans, Turks, Mongols or Tanguts, there is much to learn about this region even if their culture is not dominant today, for it has left its mark in modern day cultures and our histories.

In other words, “extinct” doesn’t mean irrelevant. And as for Chinese players being upset; You’re getting Chinese content in a DLC that explores the Song Dynasty’s struggles against the Jin, and as a bonus, getting the Jin as a civilization.

The Jin Dynasty was not the predecessor of the Qing Dynasty. Nurhaci came from the Huligai tribe. And the Jurchens hated the Huligai people the most.

Chinese elements? Brother, this is cultural appropriation.

This is like asking who invented the organ cannon, but the country that invented it doesn’t have one.

Dynastic dispute is an internal dilemma, not the alienation of it. They were still both Tangut peoples of the same origin, their internal conflicts and dividing paths later in history does not change this.

And what culture appropriation are you waffling on about?
