Still not bad though.

But it will be like this if you simply set it “free” and leave it untouched for two months.

The game needs contents that are easy to get into like AOE2 campaigns. Otherwise if you’re not a heavy pvp player it only offers 2 weeks of real gameplay content. Skirmish vs AI is also quite deep but like I said in a much earlier post, the game lacks guidance to its deeper contents. Most players would only touch the surface (which is ironically much shallower compared to AOE2).

AOE2 is like 10 on the surface and 20 underneath. AOE3 is like 1 on the surface and 100 underneath. (absolute values)

I believe I’ve written something similar before, but now it’s a good time to bring up this topic again as the free mode would cause an influx of new players hesitating whether to stick around. TLDR: The greatest strength of AOE3 is its great depth, but it’s not well presented. It needs ways to better motivate players to explore stuff. It’s pretty obvious that AOE3 has unprecedented depth for an AOE or even a RTS. So it cannot directly copy the mode of other games. For most RTS, you skim throug…

Without that, the majority of the devs’ great works will be omitted and wasted.

I’d expect that number to peak again even with a small content update because many potential players would finish the sp contents and leave until there are new ones.

I hope that this new Free to Play model isn’t Microsoft’s final Hail Mary to “save” AoE3DE. It’s a good idea, but it needs more content in the form on small monthly updates and events to keep these new players engaged.

Now they are focused on AoM Retold, so it will take at least 1 more year to release a new expansion for 3 DE…
