Age of Mythology Patch 2.7 Preview (Discussion)

After I installed the 2.7 patch beta, I noticed the texture compiler/extractor tool had disappeared. I had to revert back to 2.5 to get it back, so could you put it back in?

Speaking of the texture tool, when extracting textures, the transparency/alpha channel is jumbled which is annoying and can sometimes be a serious issue for modders. I would appreciate if this problem could be fixed.

Patch seems very unstable so far. Random maps seem to crash to desktop after ~10 minutes (giant map, player count >=4). I had the Fall of the Trident campaign crash to desktop after garrisoning relics.

Greetings,

So here’s a weird v-sync issue that I have. If I launch the game, v-sync active, the fps meter is at double the correct cap, in my case, it’s at 144 when it should be at 72 (my monitor is OCed at 72hz).

However if I alt-tab and then back again at the game, the fps stays at a correct 72.

Weird, huh? As a side note, when taking a screenshot with windows key+(whatever key you have assigned it to), the fps briefly sky highs at 180+ only to go back to normal.

Fps meter at upper left corner of the screenshots before and after alt-tab.

after “the important news” of the gamescom on age of empires, we hope you get something interesting about the state of patch 2.7 of age of mythology XD

What happened? After the Patch 2.7 it appears that nobody is playing anymore.
At least on steam…it’s difficult to find a game and when you create one, nobody comes.
It’s just me or patch 2.7 just scared everybody?

Don’t tell me whats in the patch; Wait let me guess! They (a Germanic company) nerfed Zeus and boosted the Germanics. Funny that.

Zeus, Thor and Isis were top tier working that out was an achievement in itself.
Fu Xi I guess was top tier for Chinese.
Zeus didn’t need a nerf to his heroes, try taking down a Titan with only four heroes that get sniped continuously. The Bolt GP may seem OP since it kills anything in the game instantly, but Son of Osiris and Nidhog don’t have counters. Greek archers can’t defeat the Dragon and Son of Osiris is only vulnerable to melee(good luck trying to reach him). And if you have saved a bolt for them then that is what GP strategy is all about. The favor reduction just killed the Centaur rush and Minotaur rush both counterable rushes so we lost strategies with 2.7. Why chose Zeus now?

Your patch fails to address long-time issues.

The most important one: THE CONSTANT STUTTERING.

I cannot play this game without it stuttering every 2 seconds. It makes the game unplayable long-term.

Secondly your “enable vsync” option in the game options is broken. It does nothing regarding vsync. If I enable this option in-game, and the game is paused, I see my fps indicator flying from 5FPS to 80 FPS then back down. Vsync in game DOES NOT WORK. I’m guessing I will have to limit it in my nvidia panel.

Why can’t you devs address the critical issues that a ton of people are complaining about regarding the constant in-game stuttering?

You mean like an Intel I9 9900 k with an RTX 280 with 32 gigs of RAM running Samsung Evo SSD?

My computer isn’t the problem. It’s the game. Duh.
Any other genius recommendations?

Stop expecting MS to suddenly care and be a good sheep and play AoE2HD/AoE2DE instead lol

Is it stuttering or is it lagging? I mean in multiplayer or single player?

I think there many be an issue with the “Giant” map size, as Photolysis has pointed out. The one that I’ve found is that extra Town Centers do NOT spawn on that map size. I can play the same quantity of players/teams on Large or Normal, and all additional TC’s spawn as-expected. But, on Giant, none spawn except for the starting town center.

Bug: players sometimes start with 2 or 3 Towers on Silk Road map instead of 4.

Hi! Thank you for this patch! Hopefully a new beginning!

My first feedback is that efforts should be focused on fixing and improving the pathfinding a lot.
It is really common to see units moving around in a weird way, not attacking, attacking the wrong unit or so. I don’t know how to emphasize this more.

Why not having an option to enable a selected group of unit to attack a specific other group of unit. Not a stance, but a behaviour. Like - all cavalry attack ranged units, all archers attack footmen first, all heroes attack MU…etc. Don’t worry for micro. It will not eliminate it. Micro will always be a potential game changer. It will just make things less annoying.

It should be made easier for user to select a large group and make them run away at their original max speed for each unit. It is rather annoying when a whole group of fast raiders is being pwned because a single archer is in the selection group. There should be a button for that, like alt+right click.
Such hotkey already exist in other games, like Warcraft III.

For a game like AOM, no unit selection max limit should exist. It’s not Warcraft 3 (even there it is very controversial). I don’t think it suits the spirit of the game.

At the same time, there are lots of unit that have special attacks like healing, etc. Similarly to Warcraft 3, the UI should be reviewed to give access to those special attacks using buttons.

Please, give access to a grid hotkey from scratch in the game. The user could select it.
Everyone would benefit from it and especially new users.

Add an option to always show units healthbar.

Enable user to tab between selection of different type of unit and give specific order to specific subgroup.
Enable player to tab between a selection of different building type to create units from each of them without having to select them one by one.
Create an autoqueue hotkey.

The rest is not so important, seriously. The game is playable and relatively balanced, apart from that. It’s really the pathfinding, glitches and lags that drove everybody away…

Thank you again for caring about… your game.
I strongly believe it has the potential to attract new players even today.

It was absolutely fantastic to see news of this patch, I had actually given up on the possibility a while ago. Others have already covered the gameplay-related issues that still need addressing, but I have noticed that there are still a number of graphical bugs with the game- missing effects that were in the original and should really be in this “extended edition”.

Among them, there is the fact that units, such as the hoplite (and many others) are missing various elements of their weapons and armor etc on their unit models (carried shields and spearheads are probably the most noticeable missing elements at a quick glance). You can simply compare how the unit models in this version appear at each upgrade level to how they did in the original game to see everything that’s missing. It doesn’t seem to be limited to Greek units, either. It’s fantastic to see the frost effects fixed, but we still have visual glitches with the Rain god power, and graphical issues with the Gaia pool or butterflies for example.

I really hope someone on the team who can deal with these visual bugs can take the time to sit down and figure out which various effects were in the original version of the game that are no longer present in EE and bring them back. It’s a bit hard to say you’re getting your money’s worth for a visual upgrade when it seems so incomplete- it’s like the game took a nice step forward but another step or two back due to these missing elements; looking better in some regards but worse in others.

Anyway, thank you for supporting the game again, and I really hope you can fix these issues and others. If things are fixed up, I’ll finally feel like I can recommend the game to a friend of mine who I played AoM online with all the time back in the day.

That’s right that many things became invisible or very ugly in EE: Gaia’s butterflies, Spider egg, Rain, the unit preview (!) in the editor, Gaia’s lush, Water lily and so on, but these are only the extreme examples. The truth is that everything looks worse than in the original game, you have to test editor objects and you will see that. Even explosions look much better in the original game. Or the effects around Set animals. So we got uglier graphics in EE, 100 times higher system requirements and terrible pathfinding for 28 bucks.

You can set an autoqueue hotkey with user.con.

Bug: the launch screen states: patch 2.7 is LIVE (since July 23th). It’s incorrect, it’s in BETA stage.
Bug: when I try to upload a mod, I see a “preview picture COMING SOON” box. Coming soon, yeah? What a false promise. It didn’t change since 2014.

I made screenshots from bugs:

  1. Forest icons are missing in the editor for Chinese content.
  2. The unit preview in the editor is invisible and the object list contains many empty items on the top.
  3. Preview support is still missing on the publishing mod page.
