Hey there! For people who reported this issue in the past, it may have been due to players manually switching builds to an earlier or different build than the current (live) game build. Can anyone still experiencing this issue confirm whether this is/is not the case?

If it is not the case, I need as much information as possible to help narrow down the issue:

  • Have all campaigns lost their medals?
  • Are you able to re-unlock medals of any type?
  • If you are able to unlock new campaign medals, do they disappear as soon as you re-launch the game?
  • etc.

It also seems like there are two separate issues in this thread, so please feel free to clarify the following:

  • Have you lost your campaign progress?
  • Have you lost your campaign medals?

Basically, Iā€™m trying to narrow down the cause and identify similarities between those affected by the issue, since it is very odd to see it happening in the first place.

Let me know, and thank you all for your ongoing diligence!

I just logged in the game and two of my European campaigns did not save the progress! I was just playing yesterday on ā€œThe Hunsā€ and almost finished the scenario, and now Iā€™m back to the very beginning. And for ā€œEl Cidā€, which I had completed entirely, now only shows partial completion! Windows game services just updated too, and so did Xbox game bar.

Edit: I double-checked my achievements and it shows that I completed the ā€œEl Cidā€ campaign 2 days ago, but in the game menu ā€œEl Cidā€ is not shown as complete.

Title says it all really. Been happily going through Campaigns during lock down on PC via Steam. Went to continue today & all back to step 1. Anybody know the answer?

I know there are already a couple other threads of this topic, but they are quite old (Nov 2019, Jan 2020 etc.), I commented on one of them over a week ago with no response so I figured itā€™s worth having a new thread for the more current build.

The Problem
I can play through as many campaigns as I like and it works wonderfully, but as soon as I restart the game, progress will be lost. In the Joan of Arc campagin it wonā€™t retain anything past mission 4, and after doing the 1st mission of other campagins such as Genghis Khan or Barbarossa it loses that progress also.

Art of War progress seems to be fine which is great!

As far as I know Iā€™ve had this problem the whole time since having the game but itā€™s only since the last several updates that Iā€™ve actually tried the campaigns

Reproduction Steps
Doesnā€™t happen for many people as far as I know but here is what I do!

  1. play and finish a Genghis Khan mission (without using cheats of course, so medals are attained)
  2. restart the game
  3. Try to start mission 2 and find that it isnā€™t there, and medal for the previous mission is gone also

that sucks dude! The campaigns are so good too! I hope this gets fixed quickly and you can finish them.

yeah same with the % of afk ppl in my ranking range. yesterday had two afk players

play the campaign without all your mods and it will work

Iā€™ve never changed builds manually so I believe I should always have been on the current ā€˜liveā€™ build.

  • For me some campaigns allow me to keep some medals. Eg. Joan of Arc has allowed me to keep 3 medals, but anything past that is always forgotten when relaunching the game But other campaigns it will always forget them all.
  • Every time I finish a mission it will re-unlock the medals
  • When I close the game, then they are (mostly) forgotten.

To answer your second set of questions

  • in most cases I lose all progress, except sometimes it retains a few missions
  • If it retains the progress, it has always retained the medals. Again to use Joan as an example, it says Iā€™m only up to mission 4, and so only missions 1-3 have medals

From my experience, these ā€˜twoā€™ issues have always been essentially synonymous.

Hey there,

Iā€™m playing the Definitive Edition via Steam. What happened in my case was that I ended up rebooting my monitor when trying to fish with one of the settings, and the game crashed. Unfortunately I closed the error message that popped up on reflex, so I donā€™t know what it said.

In any case when I tried to get back into the game, my campaign progress for Joan of Arc had been erased. I still had save files from the second mission, but even when I complete that level, the campaign progress remains on the intro mission.

My campaign progress and saves from yesterday evening was lost. I tried to load the saves but donā€™t see the latest ones. The log says:

Hey, just encountering this for the first time yesterday. Hereā€™s the information I can give you:

  1. I play the Windows Store version via Gamepass, and I always make sure it is updated
  2. I play between 2 computers, one at home and one at work
  3. I have previously moved between these computers and saves and progress transferred fine
  4. Yesterday I tried to launch the game at home and the save state loaded was old despite save syncing occurring (Working through the campaigns I have completed William Wallace, Joan of Arc and was half way through Barbarossa, but the save loaded placed me back part-way through Joan of Arc with a game save for one of the Joan of Arc levels visible in the save/load menu. This was probably the progress I was at last time I played the game on my home PC but not 100% certain)
  5. I quit the game without ever actually loading into a level and re-launched it, and this time all my campaign progress had disappeared, and the save game for the Joan of Arc level I was part way into completing no longer displayed in the menu (though it is still available in the file system when trying to manually load a save)
  6. I have currently not been back to the office to be able to check what that computer sees

If thereā€™s any other information I can give you, please ask.

UPDATE: I replayed the first level of the campaign through, and it bumped me back to the third level.

When the game updated today the campaigns I already played went back to the starting mission and all the historical battles became unmarked as played. Can I restore them?

The answers for my instance of the application:

  • No, I never switched between versions. I always have the latest from Steam.
  • No, not all campaigns have lost medals. More exactly, completion medals have disappeared for single scenarios, but the overall camiangn completion medals have not disappeared. For example, all Alaric scenarios have lost all medals, but Alaric campaign is marked as completed.
  • When I complete one of the affected scenarios, its medal reappears correctly, so yes, medals can be unlocked.
  • No, new campaign medals do not disappear if I relaunch the game.

For other questions:

  • No, progress has not been lost. For example, for Alaric campaign, I see all scenarios, but without medals.
  • For campaign medals, it depends on which: as I have already specified, Iā€™ve lost only scenario completion medals, but not overall campaign completion medals.

A possible solution, but it would result in a little data loss, is:

  1. For each completed campaign C:
    1.1 Let L be the completion ranking for C (e.g. bronze);
    1.2 For each scenario S in C without medal:
    1.2.1 Assign L to S.

Obviously, if a scenario had been previously won with ranking A, the campaign has been won with ranking B, and B < A, the resulting scenario completion ranking would be lower than previous one, but itā€™s better than nothingā€¦

Small update: Iā€™m fixing the bug on my account by myself, by replaying the affected scenarios. Currently, only Alaric campaign is still affected.

I started aoe2de on a new computer today and received a warning that my game files wonā€™t be synced. Apparently steam cloud is not supported on this game. But then how are we supposed to sync? @GMEvangelos

I copied the Games folder from my old computer so I could keep all the savegames. But campaign progresses are all reset. This sucks.

I should mention, I could definitively repro this bug (and currently I have lost all my campaign progress) by following the steps I did to fix this other bug:

In particular, I deleted my steam cloud files and my local files, and that was enough to remove my campaign progress. I needed to do this because without deleting my files, my resource drop-off bug persisted. I wish there were a way to fix the old profile files so that I get my campaign progress back, but remove the resource drop-off bug.

I am so confused. There is no Steam Cloud option for aoe2de, and I confirmed this with the support team. But there are the ā€œSteam/userdata/ā€¦ā€ files that apparently carry meaningful data. So how are we supposed to sync? @GMEvangelos

I managed to recover my campaign progress by replacing the ā€œPlayer.nfpā€ file here with my old one.
