this is disrespectful towards the rest of the world. you can not even choose if you want to use this or not.
this is a totally unprofessional behaviour to implement a filter that doesnt even work properly.
sry for my bad english, im just a 41 year old guy who played this game alot and who is very disappointed of this unprofessional behaviour.
may i ask you to give us the possibility to decide if we want to use it or not?
and if you chose to filter and it works as intended, could you just “*” the filtered words and not the whole sentence?
Why would anybody need to curse while playing AoE2 anyway? I never have.
Because of Freedom, u can write what u want where u want without a police erasing your words
I jokingly wrote, “rude etiquette” and that became, “**** *********”. Why, exactly? A friend unpaused the game when I wasn’t at my PC, so I typed this in jest when I returned. Again, a non-spectator game with a friend… vs. AI. Two adults can’t even say, “rude etiquette” to each other. Hmm.
I could certainly think of more toxic ways to write something similar… but “rude etiquette”?? hahaha
It MUST be changed. we want NO FILTER
The funny thing is it seems to be applied rather arbitrarily. I queued up for ranked today and was teamed with someone who’s name suggested something about a certain female parent of mine. I could see their name in that screen. But while playing and in the statistics their name was censored. I guess it could be because that’s where spectators could see the name, but how did the game know that I can take a joke much better than the average spectator? Or it could be just because if they censored the name there as well I would have no idea who this player was in case I totally want to clan up with them or something. But that just makes the whole thing a bit silly. They want to allow people to have a name like that and use it for ranked games, they just want me to see those names as little as possible? That’s trying to have your ************* cake and eat it too.
EDIT: Oh, or it could be the delay people mention above. That’s possibly even sillier.
Please make the filter optional. For a lot of us the filter is just annoying.
It’s been over a month and still not even a reply from this? Why is this still a thing? The number 1 is censored, also 11. If you play as blue your nickname is censored on the score, but not on chat
Feels like MS won’t stop until they make this game 3+ friendly. They removed corpse decay since release and now this filter. Corpse decay was something that I was looking forward to all honestly. I heard that they are removing corpse decay in AoE4 as well. This type of child-friendly non sense are making me less excited about future games.
My name got filtered in the match I just played. The funniest thing, I thought, was that the filter didn’t stop there, it also filtered the player number, so 1 Pan Calvus became * *** ******.
Same here, is razer and boi offensive? jesus it’s beyond a joke. Just add a filter option for christ sakes! it’s painful after all these years not being able to express my rage!
Yes, it has made typing anything really difficult. I remember in one game I said 'how do you deal with hussar gather point in base"? and I had to keep retyping the sentence over and over until I finally figured out that ‘deal with’ was the word that was causing the whole sentence to be filtered.
When it makes an error, we don’t even know what word caused the filter, that is why at a minimum it should only censor the word used, that way we know what word not to use and the meaning of the sentence is still there.
What pisses me off the most isn’t that its not optional or that it censors on ridiculous words (onager? lmao), but how poorly this was made.
Its like some business requirement that came from a useless meeting full of dinosaurs fell on the devs last minute and they just brushed it off to some junior dev. There is literally zero effort in making this feature user friendly.
- The latency on message is ridiculous for today’s standard. Do they just run the most naive text search on every message against a dictionary of blacklisted words? Does it hit some swear-word API on a different server? Did they do any testing even? There is no way that latency difference went unnoticed.
- It censors the WHOLE message. Like they didn’t want to bother. Just void the whole ■■■■ message. Maybe having to find the location of the bad poopoo mean word :((( was too hard. Probably even doubled the latency. Why not just send a simple “Censored” instead since they obviously don’t give af.
- The fact that its not localized and censors other languages. Again, no real thought behind this feature. Just CENSOR CENSOR CENSOR.
- It being mandatory also shows that they legit didn’t have time to properly design this and just threw this ■■■■ in mid sprint.
tl;dr This wasn’t designed or implemented with the user in mind. This was half assed into the game because some dinosaur from above deemed it necessary. Did no one on the team have the backbone to stand up against this ■■■■■■■■ “feature” and actually have the player base in mind?
Is there any way I can submit a bug report about this filter to the devs? This is so heavy handed it’s beyond a joke, I basically can’t chat in game at all.
For me:
- Any message containing the letter “i” or the number “1” is censored.
- This obviously includes taunts 1 and 11, the message is censored but the taunt audio plays
- Sometimes it censors only if the word “I” is by itself, sometimes it censors if the letter “i” exists even within a word
- My name is censored in some games, but not others
- In some games, literally everything I type is censored, I’m unable to say any message at all, even single letters
- The chat filter seems to be different for different players, sometimes people can read what I type and I can’t
The whole thing is a hot mess, and now that we have the reporting feature, I see no reason for it.
I have isolated this issue to be a problem with Xbox Live, and not the game. Steam users do not have this censoring, provided they are not signed into Xbox Live at the same time. By default, message filtering is set to the highest level as specified in https://beta.support.xbox.com/help/family-online-safety/online-safety/safety-settings-for-messages. This setting is NOT modifiable via PC as the option is not present in account settings, but is modifiable via an Xbox console. Modifying the setting on a console will also affect the setting for PC.
I have contacted Xbox account support regarding this and they have confirmed that this is not implemented yet for PC. They are also unable to modify it directly as this setting is classified as personal information which they do not have authorization to change. The only way to get this fixed is to push attention to this issue as the Microsoft/Xbox developers may not be aware of this.
I have posted a report via Feedback Hub, comment on it so that it can get more attention. You can access this from [Start] > [Feedback Hub]. Select [Feedback] on the left menu, sort by [Most Recent], filter by [Problems], Device [PC], Category [Gaming and Xbox], Subcategory [All Other Games]. Feedback was submitted at time of posting this message, titled [Xbox account lacking options to modify message filtering on PC].
This may be the dumbest tech issue I’ve encountered this week. Great work finding that out.
This is really ridiculous. The game started censoring my nickname which is Pejvl87. It is not even a word that would mean something as far as I know. In which language is it considered offensive?
in the medieval age, the game setting, it was an offensive word in latin.
@TriRem you are at least partly to blame for this mess. I saw you complain to the aoe Twitter and they actually responded to you saying that would do something, and now here we are. I can’t even communicate with my teammates because you’re so soft.
Don’t blame him. His complaint was completely justified. The issue is microsoft/forgotten empires chose the wrong solution (if you could even call it a solution) to combat toxic players.
