16gb of physical memory… And im not saying it necessary, its just the way I found to solve the random crash problem in this game (all my others game works fine without virtual memory at all).
Guys, I personally don’t think this has anything to do with RAM or VRAM or any of these things. The game uses only one thread, and everyone listing specs has said they have a i7 or higher. I think this would point to the fact that the game relies too heavily on the single core performance that it won’t work anyway…
Looks like this one have a few more replies. Same as everyone else, just happened to me. During MP game just randomly crashed, no error, no stop responding, nothing at all.
I have an i7 8700k RTX2060 16GB RAM
Same thing happening for me
Game Version:
101.101.32911.0 4395635
Steam
Issue:
my game keeps crashing a lot. i am motly playing multiplayer via matchmaking. game freezes for about 2 secs and crashes to desktop then. i dont really know if i do something special right before that happens. it didnt happen to me on thursday and friday (CET) but does it very often since.
You’re not alone guys

Same, ill just be playing at any random point and it will crash for no apparent reason. I did notice that if i saved fairly frequently it did seem to slow the crashes but not eliminate them. I have an i7-8700k rtx2080 and 32gb ram so i know its not an issue on my end as far as being able to run it. They get this bug under control and they’ll have a solid launch as far as I’m concerned.
Is everyone here using the UHD option ? Does the game crash without that ? I solved the problem as posted above, with page file increase. The game uses about 11-13Gb of ram with UHD. I have 16Gb installed and alocated 5Gb of page file on the game partition.
Experiencing the same thing - I have 32 GB RAM. Here is my crash dmp file if it’s helpful. UHD is enabled.
I have the same thing, the game crashes repeatedly. Often it will play for 30 mins or so before the crash, but it never lets me play for long enough to actually finish a game - it is starting to drive me crazy.
I have tried lowering the resolution, with and without the enhaced graphics pack, standard maps and campaign. All against AI, as I did not want to ruin someone elses day as well.
For those experiencing crashes, is your power plan set to high performance? You can check this in the following way:
- Press the Windows key and search for Power & Sleep
- On the right select additional power settings
- Select high performance plan
The game is badly optimised end of story all these user fixes do nothing.
It also crashes for me. It crashes just after starting a Campaign and pressing Skip on the intro dialogue. It also crashes on the Historic Battles. I can get it to launch a Single Player game, but I haven’t played long enough to see if it crashes there.
I have an i7-4771, GTX 780, 16GB of RAM.
So I changed my page file (even though I have 12 GB ram) and I’ve NEVER had to this before with anyy other game, but now atleast I can enter a standard game, but after a few minutes it crashes to desktop (no error message).
It seems A LOT of people are having this issue. So people don’t worry, it’s not your PC that is the problem. The problem is that the game is horribly optimized.
My hope for the devs is that they hire more tech and programming guys and less artists to help fix these issues. The game is unplayable because of these crashes.
I was going 1v2 against two AI’s on max difficulty and I was about to win when my game crashed!!! So frustrating!
This is a post I’ve posted elsewhere on this forum, but it might apply to some here.
To give you an idea of the demands this game places upon virtual memory, here are some screenshots of task manager whilst the benchmark is running.
Settings used
UHD OFF - Peak RAM usage = 6GB, Virtual memory usage = 11.5GB
UHD ON - Peak RAM usage = 13.8GB, Virtual memory usage = 25.7GB
By default windows decides how big the pagefile should be, in my case it was not able to assign enough (due to lack of space on my primary hard drive), so my game crashed.
I have the same issue. The game crashed a few times, it goes straight to the desktop without any messages. I also had a BSOD once. Here are the details :
- It always happens when i’m in an online game that I created, with 1 other player and 1 or 2 AIs.
- It’s often in late game (about 45 min in, imperial age and whatnot)
- Sometimes it starts lagging really hard, like a frame every 4 of 5 seconds, and then it crashes ; sometimes it’s very sudden ; but about 2/3 of the time, I experience no lags or crash.
- Had the issue since day one, and still have it. Right now i am on version 101.101.32911.0 4395365
- My PC is getting old-ish, so i run the game with graphics on low, and i don’t have any DLC/UHD/graphic packs. My specs : i7-4700MQ, 16GB of ram, GT 750M
My case is about the same.
When my UHD is on, I can play Wallice tutorial campaign until the last one. The last one crashes when UHD is on and goes fine when UHD is off. I am afraid the units number or the map size plays the trick as the first few campaign missions of Wallice is pretty small. If UHD is off, every campaign mission is playable.
My desktop has 16 GB rams and RTX2060S 8GB video cards. Perhaps not good enough to utilize graphic enhanced DLC. Or there’s some bugs in game.
My suggestion: if your game crashes, check UHD is on or not. If it is on, turn it off.
I didn’t even download de UHD graphics as I am not in the illusion that a 1060 will run that. For me that is not the fix then…
I doubt it is a RAM issue. My workstation I am playing on has 64GB RAM but still terminated the last two games and went straight to the desktop. 41GB were free while I was playing. The last game died after 5 minutes when I barely had 20 settlers. No graphics DLC. Quality at medium on a 2k screen. Please look into this @AoE2DE-Team! We would be glad to help, but since there is no error message or report functionality it is hard to guess what logs are useful to you.
BTW: A really nice feature would be the possibility to rejoin a game; some regions experience random short disconnects and even though it is a disadvantage for the team it is still better to have someone back after 5 mins instead of losing him permanently.
Good to know, most ppl have 16Gigs up until now. What kind of CPU do you have in your PC?
