I’m sure if you describe your problem and what you’ve already tried to remedy it, someone can find you a solution. Did you happen to buy the game on Xbox live AND steam? Have you tried deleting your MOD folder: C:\Users\User\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\123456789\Mods
If there are people out there that can never get mods then all of us modders would have to do this… If that’s the case I’d like to know, but anyone I’ve helped with such problems eventually got it to work. Let’s not troubleshoot it here though, consider making a separate post. Not discouraging anyone from uploading zips, I just think there’s a better way to resolve that.
@MerlinMadHat check steam discussions about troubles getting mods, already did a subject there and it seems that no one has the solution except uploading zips and doing it manually…

Since the newest patch, I get the following message at the start of a game, when the “useless plants remover”-mod is enabled:
“system attempted to load an incorrectly-formatted asset; some assets will not display”
How to get rid of this message?

In order to stop your mods from triggering the error message when entering games you just need to update them to contain correctly formatted empty .smx files.
I recommending subscribing to empty_smx - https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/3136
Inside the mod directory there are empty.smx files which you can use to save over each of your empty files with. Once all of the original files have been replaced the error message should no longer appear and the assets will still appear invisible in game as intended.
