Ideas for new Asian religion minor civs?

I know the Asian religion minor civs are not a popular topic among posters here.

On one hand, they simply accomplish The Asian Dynasties’ need to have minor civs, without necessarily being exciting in gameplay, or thematically on-point.

On the other hand, some posters are unfamiliar with and apathetic towards the subject; some others would prefer TAD’s entire stereotypical “religions and wonders” theme scrapped, and have all Asian content redesigned from scratch, like shown in this thread.

However, we can think about it in another way:
1.) The devs aren’t going to scrap existing content. The Asian religion theme is here to stay.
2.) Ideally, minor civs should fulfill these functions:

  • They are distributed wide enough to appear in multiple maps;
  • One region can have multiple settlements belonging to different minor civs;
  • They represent factions that are interesting but aren’t made into full civs.

And in Asia, we have highly diverse religions coexisting, each widespread and connected with sophisticated cultural traditions and migrant communities. We can see that religions actually do fulfill this role.

We also need to consider the reality that even if AoE3DE gets more Asian DLCs, we are very unlikely to get every notable Asian empire as main civs. Being represented by minor civs is better than not appearing at all.

For TAD’s existing minor civs, it’s easy to see they are thinly veiled representatives for major religions:

1.) Bhakti Temple - Hinduism
2.) Jesuit Misison - Christianity
3.) Shaolin Temple - Buddhism (Chinese, kung fu film version)
4.) Sufi Mosque - Islam
5.) Udasi Temple - Sikhism (and Sikh empire)
6.) Zen Temple - Buddhism (Japanese, samurai film version)

Upon this, KotM has added:

7.) Tengri Shrine - Tengriist Shamanism (and steppe nomads)

We can also make a list of the remaining civ candidates this forum had discussed:

  • Malay / Javanese;
  • Koreans;
  • Vietnamese;
  • Siamese;
  • Burmese;
  • Afghans;
  • Persians;
  • Omani.

With the above conditions, what minor civs do you think can be added?

Here are some ideas:
1.) Neo-Confucian School:
Units: Korean arquebusier; hwacha
Regions: Korea, China, Southeast Asia
Representing Confucianism. Doubling as Korea representation (where Neo-Confucianism was the state ideology) in case they do not receive a full civ.

2.) Theravada Temple:
Units: Burmese cavalry; elephants
Regions: Ceylon, Southeast Asia
Representing the Buddhism of Southeast Asia, replacing the Shaolin & Zen temples on maps where they don’t belong. Doubling as Burmese representation, where Buddhism was deeply ingrained in the society (Myanmar was aggressively expansionist and was no doubt a major military empire of the AoE3 period; the issue is the Siamese may simply have more cultural materials to round out a full civ’s feature list).

3.) Dorje Temple:
Units: Highland cavalry; herdsmen; yak
Regions: Himalayas, Mongolia, Silk Road, northern China
Representing the Buddhism of Himalayas and Mongolia.

4.) Raven Shrine:
Units: armored Siberian bowmen
Regions: Siberia
Refers to Kutkh. Representing the Shamanism of indigenous peoples in deep Siberia.

5.) Kamuy Shrine:
Units: Ainu hunter; bear
Regions: Japan, Kamchatka
Representing the Ainu people.

6.) Tao Shrine:
Units: Nian lancer; Nian gunner
Regions: China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Southeast Asia
Representing Taoism, Chinese folk religions, and specifically Nian Rebellion.

The above list is partially inspired by the “4th row” in TAD’s initial wonder plan, representing 3 cultures BHG didn’t intend to make into main civs:

Hwaseong Fortress, The Potala, Incomparable Monastery

I would love to see the Ainu represented!

I’d also would love to see Dayak people
(I listed some suggestions in a previous post)

The only thing with Bornean tribes is whilst religious practices were important, they followed all kinds of pagab, Christian and Muslim religious, so they would work better as a typical Minor Civ rather than a Religious Site.

1) Confucian

Religions with a strong tie to the state like Confucianism and Shintoism would be better represented by full civs rather than minor civs. Korean units should be part of a full civ, and China would be better off having Confucian religious units instead of the Kung Fu ones. The existing Chinese Kung Fu stuff would be a better fit for the Shaolin Temple than the Rattan Shields anyways.

2) Theravada

I agree with this one. It would be the logical place to move the War Elephant.

3) Dorje

A 4th Buddhist holy sites is kinda pushing it. Especially with the Tengri Shrine covering some of the region.

4) Kutkh

The Siberian archers are cool but it seems like a bit of a stretch to have a second shamanistic Siberian holy site.

5) Kamuy

This is so specifically Ainu that you might as well just do a standard native site. The holy sites aren’t restricted to Asia, so I don’t think it would be unreasonable to include a few non-religious sites on the edges of Asia. Ainu, Bedouins, Kurds, and Armenians would all make sense as standard Asian natives.

6) Tao

This would be reasonable with a few more Chinese maps, but I’m not sure what it has to do with the Nain rebellion. The unit should be something to do with Tai Chi, and could have weapons like wind and fire wheels or meteor hammers (would be a lot more appropriate than having them as a main cavalry unit).

7) Islamic Split

I’d suggest also splitting the Sufi site into 2-3 Islamic holy sites. It’s stretching one site too far to try to make it fit everywhere from North Africa to Indonesia.

8) Outside Asia

I don’t see why the holy sites need to be Asian. They’re already on some African and South American maps. The concept would also be a good fit for Polynesia and Australia.

They could also fit for Europe.

I think the Armenians are an obvious candidate. They are both a distinct nation and religion, so I think they would work.

Maybe also the Chaldeans (although they were more religiously fragmented).

Dayak would be confined to just one map. A “headhunter” holy site could be a potential way to cover the various tribes of the Malay Archipelago. There’s a tremendous amount of cultural and linguistic diversity in the area, but headhunting tribes are found on most of the islands. It could also just be a mercenary unit, since they fought for a price (that price being heads).

Not giving the Raven Shrine Reindeer Archers smh my head.

How about this then:
A full Chukchi main civ with a mobile sleigh TC that itinerates between Trading Posts, reindeer herding-based economy, whale boneyard as a support building, cards about utilizing every part of the whale —

Three words: WHALE. STOMACH. DRUMS.

Chukchi culture is metal. :ghost:

Not a fan of this.
The main reason is that Confucian scholarship is not quite a typical religion. Additionally, these units are too Korean-specific, making them as awkward outside of Korea as Zen would be in Southeast Asia.

My personal preference is to introduce Korean units as mercenary units to represent the Koreans, such as the Joseon Arquebusier. Before the Italians and Swedes became civilizations, they were represented by mercenaries such as Elmetto and Fusiliers.

This is nice, but the Burmese cavalry is not needed.
First, Burmese Cavalry may be the same type of unit as War Elephants. Second, when we know that the Siamese have a very high priority in becoming a civilization, the Burmese are actually very likely to form a DLC with them.

Won’t it better to be simply named Tibetan Buddhist Temple?

Very good addition. By the way, we can divide the large area of Siberia into at least 3 maps, so that we can have Tengri and this together.
I hope the armored Siberian bowmen are based on the Koryak archers in lamellar armours.

I want the Ainu minor civ too.
But I think before that we have to have more maps of Japan, not just 2 maps. Zoom in to view this area of Japan to the same scale as in the campaign.

This way you can not only see Ainu or Kamuy Shrine on at least Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Ezo and Ōu, but also Zen and Shinto Taisha (grand shrine), which can have Kunoichi as the unit, on other maps.

It may better be named Taoist Temple, maybe.
With the introduction of more Chinese maps, Shaolin and Taoist Temple don’t need to appear outside of China proper.

I would recommend just naming their units Wuxia without having to specifically refer to Nian Rebellion. Wuxia will represent Chinese folk martial arts masters. In Wuxia-themed Chinese fantasy works, many masters often belong to Taoist sects. In AoE3, Wuxia doesn’t have to have too many fantasy elements, but it can still be a combat expert. At the same time, Taoist priest can be used as a healing unit as the second trainable unit.

I remember how the only books I found about Chukchi military units and illustrations were in russian. Ah the pain…
