+1 from me for treasures, heroes, home cities. This post just reminded me that I have played AoE3. Pretty unremarkable game but I do remember customizing my home city decorations and liked viewing my home city. And the map treasures were a lot of fun to find. Wow that game was so polished compared to AoE4 its crazy.
Yes and to do the game more fast and dynamic…and what the devs give you the option of create units of one in one or in batch training but more slow (for balance issues)…
AoE 3 is from 2005…but yeah…
Heroes are in every other RTS. It would add a lot more depth to the game. The campaign talks so much about certain leaders and heroes in history. Khan and Mehter support units are like pseudo-heroes and are fun to play with. It’s as if they planned to develop them but ran out of time.
That doesn’t make sense, because if most people hate slowdowns, what majority is it? The majority of those who play AOE-3 or a majority outside the game. If the latter, then we already know that anything coming from AOE-3 for other AGE games will receive a resounding ‘No’ as an answer, however no one seems to complain about the Malian civilization, an idea that comes from an African civilization from AOE- 3, or the new Ottoman civilization system from AOE-4, a bit similar to the metropolis system from AOE-3.
When AoE3 came out there are several things that most people hated and yes did not continue to play the game because they didn’t like it.
Snare is one of those things.
What doesn’t make sense about this?
You seem to be contradicting yourself. No, not anything will receive a resounding no, because some things people do like about AoE3, even people who don’t like it enough overall to play it (because of those things like snare mentioned above).
1.- SNARE
There are already units that are capable of snaring, among them the English longshot archer, when using the movement of stakes against cavalry, or the common spearmen when parrying heavy cavalry charges. In fact if they take out the Incas and the Mapuches, and the Bolas unit (Liwi), which has the ability to snare the units it attacks would be great.
Now, considering that in the AoE 3 period, musketeers weren’t wearing chainmail to save weight and use larger muskets, so it’s normal for them to get unbalanced to melee attack. In Aoe4, almost all the military that reached 3rd age wear some chainmail, and are prepared for melee combat, it is difficult for them to stagger by melee.
On the other hand, there are also punishments: Spearmen can only protect to one side and in a static position, if they run away, cavalry charges devastate them. Also due to the heavy cavalry charge technique, running away from combat is no longer so simple and can lead to the complete destruction of your leftover army. Also, unlike the original age2, siege weapons now have to be turned and cocked to attack, so their positioning is important.
Wolf snare*(new): Just by accident, I recently found out that if a wolf attack an archer, the wolf is able to “Snaring” the poor archer.
2.- BUILDINGS TO AGE UP
This feature is really from the AoE3, from the Asian civilizations. It’s such a cool feature, that it’s a shame that this mechanic “doesn’t exist” for some other European civs, like Spain or Portugal; considering that these civ have made notable architectural works in the colonies. Look at any Spanish Viceregal city, and one or you will see palaces of Viceroys or conquerors, Cathedrals and Churches of baroque style, forts and others.
It is a relief in fact that this feature exists in AoE4, you learn history, you feel identified (if you are from the country of the civ you play), and on top of that it serves as a bonus. What more could you ask for?
3.- UNITS WITH SPECIAL CLICKABLE ABILITIES
Although there were heroes in Age of Mythology, their mechanism was to use their charged abilities when attacking; while button triggered abilities only appeared in Age of empires 3 I had the scouts. In AoE4 in the campaign, there are heroes that have cool abilities, and several unique units retain that trait:
The pavés shield of the Arbalester,
The Khan’s arrows.
The transformations of the Lodya ship.
Activating the blessing of the Prelate.
The hiding of the Musofadi warriors.
The 3 skills of the English Longshot Archer
The supervised production of Imperial Official.
4.- BUILDING DESTRUCTION’S ANIMATIONS
Is one of the most loved things of Aoe3, when you go to the base of the enemy and destroy everything with your 4th age cannons. And the ruins! beautiful. This was implemented in the Aoe2:DE, and even the Aoe4.
MECHANICS THAT I WOULD MISS, AT LEAST FOR A MOD, OR SOME MAPS
1.- VARIED FAUNA.- Change the species of deer depending on the biome. Seriously, there are many species of deer, they are not the same. Also add wild creatures in levels and vary them depending on the biome:
Biome: European (E) African (Af) Asian (As), MesoAmerica(MA) Amazonas (Am), Andes (An)
Tier 3 - Boar (E,As), Elephant (As,Af), they leave a lot of meat but are dangerous.
Forbidden animals to Find with the Explorer for balances: Consider that because some livestock is “halal” or not eated by some civs (Boar, pigs, cows) , probably is better that those animals would not be added to the ruminants that one finds on the map. But you could build them in the mill or stable if the civ has no problem with eating it (Mali with the cows).
I feel that at some point, they are going to have to include various types of animals, especially if they want to create a variety of biomes to make scenarios of Africa or South America. And they can, they have the mold designs from the AoE3.
2.- BANDITS.- Annoying in some areas of the map, it would be good if they guard sheep, relics or even sources of gold or stone, or even on the routes to the markets. It would be fun to kill them, and it is known that they were frequent in the middle ages.
3.- MERCENARIES.- Either as a camp on some maps or as a mercenary camp building of your own, to be able to choose extra units that help your civ in the part that pales, or to give more surprises to your rival. Historically, in the middle ages most armies always had mercenary companies, like the French Reutiers, or Swiss Guard for the HRE. Obviously the most used mercenaries will continue to be unique units, that’s obvious, for example, the HRE Lanquesnete (which costs 100 gold for that), or the Genoese Crossbowman if they use Italians.
I have a suspicion that at some point, when they decide to release expansion, to balance the European civs with the new civs, they will release more common units, like reviving the Petards (but with the model of Aoe3) , and the harasser/guerrilla.
4.- SPIES AS A UNIT.- For my part, I would like them to add a unit as a “Spy” to camouflage and spy on enemies, since now there is a concealment mechanism that would work the same as the Musofasi, but this concealment lasts a long time (say, 5 minutes) . It would serve to have an idea of the strength of the enemies and be able to attack towers with a stone thrower without getting too close and relying on scouts.
5.- SHOCK AND SUBTERFUGE TROOPS.- Although there are archeries with up to 5 units of archers (Chinese) and stables with 4 (Delhi Sultanate), the barracks are sometimes not so lucky. I would suggest, for more variety, if the civ has room, putting ‘shock trooper’ or raider units as 3rd unit, if the civ. had the same. Although it is not the “romantic” combat that is sometimes narrated, historically they existed because, come on, do you think that medieval kings did not know the advantages of raiding unprotected enemy camps? In the Middle Ages there were troops that threw themselves into a fight without fear, or others that only attacked in subterfuge, there are few examples:
The Spaniards of the Kingdom of Aragon: they had the Almogavar, they stole cattle, plundered and fled to fight another day.
The French: they had Reutier, looter
The Turks: they had the Akinci (although this is cavalry, it works the same)
The Norwegians, Danes and Swedes: they had the Berserker, shock infantry.
The Japanese: they had the ninja, although this could be a type of spy and mercenary (or both)
The English themselves: they hired other Vikings to do raids, the famous Jormsvikings, but it can even be mercenaries.
bro no please its such bad mechanic its make me angry every time when it happens instead of this there is charge mechanic in aoe4 chasing units charges towards target with improved speed i liked it better, because snare slows down all the units you chose its very bad mechanic and i hope it never comes to aoe4
That my friend is a great post, sadly this needs work. Bandits as you said can guard artifacts, same as relics just with more interesting benefits. The devs work really slow and they stick to aoe 2 gameplay. Barely nothing unique. From all civs from aoe2 aoe3 and aoe 4 I had most fun with aztec, inca in aoe 3. This civilizations was such a blast to play and natives in general. Fire pit mechanics are the greatest mechanics added in aoe for me . Arrow archers instead bombards and cannons, fast infantry like coyote. Stealth jaguar who can beat the crap out of you and their last unit which you can only get from dance ceremony. This is just amazing to me. Even the buildings have abilities to call emergency.
It kind of annoys me when people request AoE3 features in AoEIV. Why not just play AoE3DE? For better or worse every AoE stands out on its own and in AoEIVs case it needs to develop into its own thing. So what, you incorporate AoE3 into AoEIV then you’ll end up with a bargain basement version of AoE3? no thanks. And I say this as an AoE3 fan. It’s way too late to force things like this into AoEIV.
This update added 2 new biomes but failed to add any unique fauna to go along with them. That is something that could have been taken from AoE3 without altering the game too much. One of my biggest complaints of AoEIv is the maps don’ actually feel like maps but esport battegrounds.
Lets face it, that was the design goal, i wouldn’t mind this if this was only an option via graphics settings, but there’s no alternative, so what gives?
