[MERGED] Game Graphics Feedback

good point. People liken age of empires 4 to mobile games for no reason, they urgently need an ophthalmologist.

We know that the game has minor and correctable errors.

come on dude. most people know it’s not like a mobile game

What specific animations bother you? Alot of people are indicating they suck, but no one is really giving a list of specific examples. The one’s i noticed off the top of my head were:

  • Arrow flight paths
  • Cavalry charge impacts
  • Some cavalry seemed to be moving too slow for their animations

I get the outcry regarding the arrows, the building/unit size issues, unit details, and certain animations. All of that is minor to me.
But the vast majority of the game looks great to me. The new game play features they have introduced look solid and exciting. I’m pumped!

I am very excited too, I hope the game will be released as soon as possible and the troll guys will rethink their comments.

Its funny that you mention trolling while agreeing with me that the towers and goldmine looks like it could be from lego.
Extremely small towers that look like they can be ran over by an elephant.
Aoe1 had the same thing but at least the artstyle made them look big and scary to go up against.
If anyone is trolling then it is you.

My point was that just because two out of thousands of art assets look similar to Age of Empires Online does not mean the entire game is “AoE O2” like you have repeatedly announced multiple times in multiple threads.
I agree, the towers could look more intimidating, the goldmines could look look less… plastic-y?
But these two assets don’t ruin the whole game, at least not for me.

Exactly. Spellforce did everything right graphicwise. Its readable, beautiful and detailed and realistic at the same time. Even Aoe3 that came many years ago has much more pleasing aesthetic.
The artstyle of aoe4 makes the units blend really bad with the environment, its for this reason everything looks like Playmobil. The contrast is bad and the details are non existent, especially when you zoom out it looks like a complete mess.
Making weapons bigger does not add readability. It just makes it look like a complete chaos. A pool noodle fight.
Making the buildings smaller and weapons bigger has been tried before in AOE Online and the game failed after a very short period. The gameplay might be good, but its not enjoyable when everything just looks silly. Its a historical medieval war game after all and should have some sort of realism so you can actually feel as you are taking part in the historic battles.
Making everything look cartoony just makes you lose these vibes.

Those are good examples but Also bowmen and cavalry impact

And another Little change, for me, It could be the blades colour. if you look at indian swords or Spears they seem plastica weapons. Changing color (iron, for example) would be cool.

I have never played spell force, but I kinda doubt it would be able to handle the 200 X 8 unit battles that AoE is designed for.

I think the building sizes need to be fixed for sure. And unit detail on par with AoE3 DE would be nice.

I also don’t like the fire effects at all.

Now that you mentioned it. You are right…the weapons do look like plastic toys.
At least they could add some shinyness to it, so it doesnt look so blunt.
I feel like the shaders they are using are causing many problems, including the textures.

AOE 4

Spellforce 3

If sc2 a game made for wider audience has blood a d corpses I won’t accept age IV excuses for no blood in a medieval RTS… This is not a Disney game.

Ive posted a comparison image of them both. You can have a look.
Also, you are saying it is made to look bad on purpose with low textures and bad shading, so people can play 200x8
But if you have a look at Aoe3 where it has much more detailed textures, the game came out many many years ago and it was always playable 200x8.
Why isnt it possible to create a good looking game in 2021 where most people have even better computers than in 2006 ?

Cavalry turn animation.
Firing arrow animation.
Cavarly movement .
Elefants animations

Those are some that I remember, now imagine how more will appear if we play ?

Game feels cheap, I don’t think they will “fix” this in 6 months.

Omg, can I please please please have the units detail from Spellforce 3

No, i played a lot of skirmish with 8 players (also co-op) with over 200 units for each players. It’s possible.

Yes, the Fire effects could be changed. Something more realistic

Okay, so I stand corrected there!

You really cannot deny that the units specifically look cartoony, especially when you zoom in.
I would absolutely prefer an AOE3 DE aesthetic in regards to the units.

But, its still not a deal breaker for me. I still think it looks great, Im still excited to play. I RARELY zoom in anyway when I play AOE.

Ao3DE has performance issues. The game does not run well on older hardware at all.
The devs has said that for AoE4 are considering the many fans who have integrated gpu’s. As someone who grew up with integrated GPUs I appreciate that they are thinking about this stuff.

— I see now that you were referring to AoE 3, not the DE. I remember not being able to play AoE3 on my laptop. Every time there was a big battle I had to look away cause it lagged so much, especially the boat battles. I definitely don’t think that AoE3 had more detail. But I guess there is room to disagree.

The fact is, I agree with what a lot of you guys are saying, unit details need work. Some animations need work, building size need work. But I would still buy the game, as is, because over all I think the game looks fantastic.

I just don’t think these issues mean the game is terrible, doomed, and ruined. It does not mean the devs have put no effort into this game. It does not mean Relic has failed.

Even if they don’t change everything on my list, its okay. They game was not developed just for me.

Yeah I’m not sure what is up with the janky turning. its like there is no cavalry turn animation at all.
I would love a SC2 turn style. Where you can turn on a dime, but it does not feel like a 2D game.
