[Mod] Historical Units and Architecture

Hi Juggernaut, would you be able to provide me with the archer line and slinger graphics (SMX files) from AOE:DE? Those would be excellent additions for your mod too for some East Asian/Indian/Southeast Asian archers. I had a thread on this matter you may recall.

I don’t have AoE DE. No luck yet in getting the SLP files(from DE1).

What about you?

How about using Age of Empires 1 Definitive Edition graphics? It’'s possible?

I recently added them to the mod.

Great! I’ve recently played a game with your mod, and saw some of the changes. From AOE 1, you could use axemen or cavemen to be some militia for some civilizations. Likewise, shortswordsmen would be great as man-at-arms for others. And the archtecture! You could make some changes on walls, and feudal archtecture.

The problem with Swordsmen from AOE DE is that they have sharp shadows, they don’t really fit well in AOE2 DE.

(notice the sharp shadow)

Some units like the Hoplite are better to be used on AOE2 DE:

It’s a shame Rise of Nations don’t have (and i Think it won’t have) a “Definitive Edition” It’s units are all flavored by civilization.

Hello there,
not sure if somebody reported this but it seems like I’m the first.

the AoE 1 models in a MP game I played tonight appeared very small. Namely, the hoplite one used as Halberd for the Byzantine, the camel for the same civ, and also the Paladin for the persians which is a heavy cavalry from AoE 1 DE.
My friend playing next to me also saw them smaller, but on my screen they were much smaller.
Let’s just say on my screen they were barely visible and looked like smurfs, while on her screen they looked like dwarves.
This was less noticeable with the persian paladin, on her screen, since the unit there seemed normally sized, but on my screen it was super-tiny, and my byzantine units from AoE2 looked like dwarves as said above.

Not sure of the cause.
Anyway, I’d like to mention that the hoplite is so much out of context and I strongly advise removing it if you like a historical approach. The helm style and breastplate were so obsolete by the 4th century onwards. where AOE2’s timeframe starts. That said, it’s your mod and you can do as you want. But just google “byzantine spearman” or even phalanx and you’ll see they were totally different.
The current Champion model would, for example, be perfect if it carried a spear or some other polearm.

Turn off UHD in graphics settings.

Hi, I’m having the same problem that EntombedCurve02 had. It’s saying “downloading” forever.

Mod size is now 202.84 MBs as you can see in your own screenshot. It will take some time to download. Have patience.

Hey I’ve got a problem. I downloaded the latest update of the mod but my mongol architecture set has reverted back to normal? No more yurts :frowning:

Yes it is intentional. I had given mongols central asian architecture with yurt for Houses and Town Centres in last update, but some people requested to keep them East Asian Architecture(since the changes were a bit non-uniform) so I reverted them back to original.

Oh I see. Also any ETA on the UHD patch?

Ummmm …, Mongols, Koreans and Vietnamese infantry can share same set of Chinese infantry since they are really similar. Of course it will be the best to give every civ own sets.

I am not really sure, since the problem is that x2 smx files (meant for 4K) are skyrocketing the size of the mod to over 1 GB! and it will only increase as I add more and more graphics in future. Also I don’t have a strong enough PC to use the UHD DLC for myself. I will need to re-create every file again for UHD.

My idea is to make a separate add-on mod that will contain the x2 files for people that want to use it. It will be activated alongside the mod. I can’t really give an ETA for it.

The same thing can be done for many other civs. There are some other reskin mods that do the same thing. I didn’t do that just to keep the units recognizable and not to make the mod too messy.
