[Mod] Historical Units and Architecture

The crossbow on the islamic world was a very unpopular weapon. Try to change the crossbowman and the arbalest for bowmen. Likewise, crossbows didn’t exist on Americans civilizations.

I was thinking of using the AOE DE siege units as well.
The ballista can be used as the Khmer heavy scorpion.
What about the catapult and the stone thrower, where can we use them? What is your suggestions?

I am sorry for this technically nonconstrutive post, but your mod is becoming awesome!

Now, I was intrigued by some of your concern that you expressed above: You don’t want the units to become too different from the original to not mess with unit recognization. I for one don’t have problem with this, I like unit variation, this is no problems in games such as Total War series or even AOE 3 or Rise of Nations. For those who play multiplayer prefer the less distraction as possibelm hence the popularity of the small trees mods, those people are not interested in this mod. That said, don’t be afraid to do some tasteful variation on the units. My humble opinion.

About the question regarding AOE DE’s Ballista, Catapult and Stone Thrower, as far as I knows, there isn’t really a sesitive change in appearance from western and eastern catapults, but AOE DE draws inspiration from the ancient world, and the civilizations that preserved the ancient world aesthetics where the islamic ones and the bizantines. So, they could use the ballista/catapult/stone thrower design.

Hello there,

in my opinion the shifting of the Byzantine champ to the Italian civ is not a good idea.
The usage of AoE DE units for the Byzantines is in general also pretty bad. Those units look too much early iron period - here we talk of the very late classical period and medieval one. Especially for imperial age units, it is unbecoming.
Personally I stopped using the mod after the addition of these two units as they look really bad in this context. But it’s just my opinion and I don’t want to sound arrogant or anything. I still follow up to see if any change will make the mod suitable for me again.

The italian champ looking like a late legionary is somewhat fitting, but the italians in-game represent primarily renaissance italians. This means that the previous champion was better, the one with the long mantle with lillies on it and the weird italian hat.

The regular halb is just ok for byzantines IMHO. The previous Byz champ looked dated by the imperial age, but it was OK enough because that sort of infantry became obsolete by the high medieval period (shields became of the oval and heather type like in the west) and Byzantines as a civ overall reflect the whole millennia in which that Empire existed.

Everything looks fine except I think you should revert the Persian elephants, Byzantine champion back to Aoe2 Legionary and Italian champion to regular champion.

Do you guys mean I should discard those models by not using them? Is it possible to use them elsewhere? I don’t really want to waste them…

personally, persian elephants are ok using the AoE model.
also, the Byzantine camel is decent, so I think you can keep it. I still don’t like it, but it’s decent. Just FYI, I don’t like that it has plate armour like late medieval europeans, and rides an unarmoured camel… it makes no sense on many levels, but whatever.

But the halb and champ are just bad. If you really want to use the hoplite model, use it for the Byzantine spearman, but in terms of usage it would be used like… never… and it would still fit little. It wouldn’t be totally out of place as it is now however.
The swordman one as a champion is just out of place regardless, because it is anti historical per se, especially due to the long mantle. It looks like a late bronze age Greek general, so afar from a historical soldier type. Also the shield is just weird. Not suitable for a massed late medieval infantry unit.
Your most realistic option is the legionary, just for aesthetics, but in truth the original champ model is already historically accurate for the “Imperial Age” time frame.

Not discard, I mean, the AOE Legion and Hoplite could be used as substitutes for earlier troops, such as lonswordsman or men at arms, and pikemen. But I agree with the others, for them to substitute Imperial versions looks anachronistic.

That’s an old version of the mod. Mod has come a long way since then.

Anyways manual installation of any AoE2 mod needs placing the files in C:\Users[UserName]\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE[ProfileId]\mods\local\

How long do you think before we get a real IA & IU mod? Personally I don’t like these mods that just change the champion or one incarnation of a unit in a unit line as I feel the changes are often jarring. Specially for things like American civs or anything else where the units change their look from a European look to a non-European look.

Also do you ever try to convince MS to include your mod in the official release. At least as an optional feature?

There is something called unit sets in this mod.
Did you check it yet?
Unique unit sets for 11 Regions (for each Architecture set)

Do you think they will listen to one random guy like me?
