More info about Retold

well… you have a point here. even tho i personally thought AoM pros are not as other pros but yeah i agree that pro players in general tend to be are very logical, down-to-earth and and more “mathematic” marginal group of ppl. if that makes sense. and therefore efficency and clear readablity comes over everything else… and yeah thats a balancing act cause i appreciate the input of some pro-players but i don’t want that the games creativity and “playfullness” suffers from pro’s logical/“mathematical” mind. we see this in other new upcoming rts games which really want to be competitive and the games creativity/fantasy suffers from it.

That’s certainly true. I think the reason AoE4 ended up being a game that didn’t feel like the Age Series was because the developers were too conscious of E-Sport.

The design is decided by the developers and no one else.

High level players are there to give a point of view of balance and readability in battles.

AoE4 has now a stability (it was released incomplete on many sides, either multiplayer or single player) and the E-Sports scene for AoM (competitive is the weak point of the game) is necessary if they want the game to rise in popularity as AoE2 did and not just be a little better than AoE3. AoM has the casual part well covered.

E-Sports comes from making a game people like to play and want to watch. It doesn’t come from asking proplayers to help with your game design, like AoE4 was done.

Make AoMR for the players and the E-Sports scene, if it’s viable, will come naturally.

AoMR is inherently less suitable for E-Sports then all the AoE games and has the potential to suffer the most from changed forced to make it competitive so they have to be careful.

Godpowers and Myth units are supposed to feel powerful and both are given 1 free on age up.
A lot of competitive players hated that AoT introduced the 1 free myth unit on Age up but I think it adds a lot to the game for casual players.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t try balancing the game but I think they need to be more careful.
The cool and powerful things have to still be cool and powerful!

Tell me what part of the game design has been influenced by “professional players”? I don’t think you can say much about that.

By the way, each pro player’s way of looking at things may vary, not everyone has the same perspective.

If an RTS is not fit to be stable and competitive from launch (or at least with a short window of time if there are initial bugs or unbalanced mechanics and they need to be fixed), it is destined to irrelevance and the smallest possible niche. We are neither in the 90’s nor in the 2000’s, the videogame market has changed and the game must meet casual and competitive expectations from the very beginning.

AoE 4 was first and foremost designed to attract as many players from past Age games (especially 2 and 3 but also Myth) as possible which is why it has elements from every past Age game and feels more like a reboot, rather than a sequel.

If pros were more heavily involved in the development, 4 would already have basic features you’d expect in an esports-centered title (such as offline replays, the option to hide civ choice in lobbies, passwords for lobbies) and it would’ve launched with ranked instead of having to wait for it for 6 months.

AoE4 had a unique opportunity to become a modern AoE. One of the biggest mistakes it made (motivated in part by the competitive aspect) was not being able to look beautiful.

Do not underestimate the virtue of beauty. If a game is beautiful, it at least makes you stop to look at it, and that’s already a BIG milestone

Agreed and very well said, that’s why we all should support a better design for jormun-elver, hydra and Scylla :+1: and of course Viking helmets too

I thought it looked fine.

Hope AOM has better graphics though. I cant wait to use the Egyptians gods and unique units again

If you like any of these games when a new one comes out you should just buy it.

They can’t keep making these if they don’t make money.

Only if I like what I see. In general, I wait a few days for videoreviews before buying a game

The undersized AOE4 buildings versus the units, and the dinghy lighting looked fine to you?

I love AOE3 but after playing 4 for awhile the units in 3 look like ants.

Yup, there’s your tradeoff. If the units are going to be a little bigger to look nicer the tradeoff is they won’t match the buildings as well.

I can live with it to get the better looking units.

If you would reduce AoE4 units size by half, many buildings would continue being undersized with them

That’s a far cry from AoE3 and AoM

Zoom in, AoE 3 units were made with the original close zoom in mind…

You see these two units (Mangudai) and tell me AOE4 graphics are better than AOE2DE’s?
This versus this?
and this is extremely zoomed in already. And they could yet introduce a new graphic set for the elite versions.

This is pixellated as it is.

Age of Mythology was the only one of the franchise I didn,'t play back in the days.
May I have some information? Is it a remaster version like the Definitive Edition or is it a ground up remake?
Thank you

AoMr seems more like a remake than a remaster.

All the game has been doing from the beginning. All animations, moddels…

And seems like AoMr is going to have new units, mechanics, more population, etc…
