My main concern is if they use this jaguar Cavalry unit as a replacement for the lack of cavalry.
With all the kind of Aztecs footed warriors out there which can be used or reinvented as Cavalry’s counter/replacement using this unit would be extremely lazy.
Aztecs in AoE2 and AoE3 worked perfectly well without cavalry, why would they suddenly need them in AoM, a game that is even more flexible when it comes to unit stats?
As a Peruvian, I can tell you that… yes, it’s Inca, absolutely Inca.
The halberd is metal, and it even has the mold of an Inca halberd (Kunkakuchuna Champi).
The woman, on the other hand, has an Aztec headdress, especially the crown, which has quetzal feathers.
My theory is that she’s a character from the campaign and it’s related to the announced plot:
Tezcatlipoca began “kidnapping people” from various corners of the globe. One of them, an Inca, is now in Aztlan and has to deal with a new region and adventures.
I hope that the jaguar rider unit is a myth unit, akin to the valkyrie.
That way, it would be acceptable in my book. Even if the riding on jaguars part was added as a fantasy element to help make the unit readable as “something special.”
Making this unit a regunal, mainline cavalry, because “they didn’t have horses, but we do need cav, so we make them ride something else, and jaguars look cool” would be the wrong move.
The Norse dont have archers either. The throwing axeman counts as infantry meant to counter infantry, and does ranged hack-damage. In the original game (I don’t know if it’s still true in Retold) he was the only unit to combine hack damage with range. Every other ranged unit either had piercing damage or siege damage. So, the Norse managed to compensate their lack of archers. They could compensate their lack of cavalry using fast archers or fast infantry. That’s the solution they had in AoE3 and in not one but two AoM Mods.
It doesn’t mean trash the jaguar rider. It means make it not a regular unit.
I suppose they’re referring to the legend of the volcanoes,Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. I find it rather clumsy that Popoca looked like an Incan.
A campaign based on Aztec mythology with an Inca hero; I thought the armadillo thing was outrageous, but this has left me speechless.
I believe they represent a Cihuateteo, which, in principle, but with many nuances, could be interpreted as an Aztec Valkyrie. Depicting them this way is unusual, but seeing as there are other cases like the Argus, at least they maintain their essence.
The mod was actually quite well done, they just needed to polish it, not start inventing crazy things.
Perhaps it’s because AoM deals with mythology and is more flexible in including outlandish units…
Yes, probably after the Aztec campaign, he will be the protagonist of the Inca campaign and we will have to fight in an Inca civil war until the Atlanteans invade us from the coast (making a nod to Pizarro’s expedition)…
Aztecs are not exactly Egyptians, they have plenty of different mythological beasts to choose from within this civ. Do they really need to invent a woman riding a jaguar?
The Cihuateteo were completely different from that, they were depicted as bony women who resembled a ghost or vampire, not exactly a normal woman riding a jaguar.
They obviously reused the Valkyrie model for this unit. This also fits with the fact that they’re trying to cut resources as much as possible.
I just hope this unit is only present in the editor or campaign, and that’s it.
I like the Armadillo too. I get that people are upset that they are inventing units ahead of using real one (Egyptians have this bad). But there are several things to keep in mind:
We haven’t seen all the myth units
They have to have special attacks that related well to the units or its abilities
They have to be unique
They have to tie well to their minor god (Retold is doing a somewhat better job of this than original AoM)
They might be saving better minor god/ myth unit combos for Aztec 4th Major God which might be already planned out.
Retold has been doing better in general with tying in myth units with their minor gods, and also as an armadillo enjoyer, i’m ok suspending disbelief a bit to get an armadillo myth unit despite normally being a “stay true to the myths” purist lol. Retold normally does pretty well with that, i’m fine letting them go a bit overly inventive from time to time tbh
