(only) constructive feedback on AoE II RoR

Relevant update: it seems that the devs are listening (or they were hit hard by the negative reviews perhaps) and they intend to bring at least 2 of the original campaigns (plus egypt tutorial campaign) to RoR. See link: Original Campaigns Coming to Return of Rome - Age of Empires

Correction: I think they are also remastering an additional (The first punic war), not sure why this is chosen by the devs, but nice nonetheless.

Is theren no one playing the dlc? ive been trying to spectate but theres no one playing, maybe they need a ranked menu like the aoe2, or at least the quickmatch menu, but theres gotta be aditional ways to enter a match besides custom games, the dlc has potential, and incredible and interesting civilizations.

Im with you in the sense of making the game age of empires 1.9 instead of age of empires 1.2 but i think theyre careful with the vietnamese fanbase, thats why its very aoe1

Not really, I’m all for AOE1.0 with new additions to the game! I’m still asking for terrains and units that are unique to AOE1!! Just some of these suggestions might look similar to AOE2, but in fact I’m asking for refined versions of AOE2 features that will be unique to AOE1.

Fact is, stuff like formations, gates, pathfinding and trade were missing and best bet was to rip them off from AOE2, but IMO that’s as far as they should go. I want unique mechanics for possible future additions in the game (Castle/Fortress, New ships, Unique unit/terrain skins, UI etc).

The era has a lot of potential with some ui tweaks, building a little bit larger (in my opinion), and the multiplayer stuff this can be good

I am glad they are listening and adding more.

I beat moderate AI pretty easily, but it takes rushing the AI and killing off villagers and damaging the economy. I would like to play where I build up at my base, and then face the enemy. The problem is if you let them go, they will pummel you later with tons of units. Even with Empire Wars, I need to rush them to stop them from building up. It works, but sometimes you want to play a defensive type game. I suppose other options are deathmatch, using a treaty, or using a closed map and walling.

Or play with lower pop cap where you or enemy can’t boom to big and can’t spam huge army.

That’s a great idea, I should have thought of that being an AoE 1 player, lol.

Few things to add to RoR:
1- A spies like tech in the Goverment Center. Still the only game that misses it.
2- Pass Writing to the Tool Age at the Market. Having to wait to the 3rd age to be able to see the allies LoS when shared exploration is turned off is unbeareable.
3- The tutorial campaign. (The devs have already announced the adding of the Egiptian campaign). Also a few Art of War scenarios would be usefull.

And make it more like aoe2, the Vietnamese player base is not buying the dlc so maybe change it a bit?

This campaign came with the demo. It’s iconic.

It’s also the CD that my grandfather gave me when I was 4 which I played endlessly. All 3 maps are deeply inprinted in my brain, I know all the music tracks by heart. It’s a pure nostalgia machine.

I would love a remake and if they don’t do it, I plan to redesign it myself lol.

I think they should enshort the egyptian tutorial campaign (as they should do with the william wallace campaign but they don’t…)

They need to remove the gold cost if they move the Writing to Feudal

I think AoE1 should add unique units to every civilization, trainable at the Academy. I know UUs are AoE2 territory, but this is AoE2, technically, so I think something in RoR should be added to make it even more appealing to AoE2 players.

EDIT: Confused Academy with Government Center.

I think is logical to add a campaign for the biggest rival of Rome in a DLC called Return of Rome, don’t you think?

I was thinking the same.
Just making a short overview from the wikia, the first four scenarios (Hunting, Foraging, Discoveries and Advancing to the Next Age) could be merged into one. Scenarios seven and eight (Trade and Religion) could be merged to single scenario similar to William Wallace 6.

Whatever the campaign, I hope they redesign it for RoR. Not just the existing missions, some should get additional missions added. Caesar for instance is way too short.

I couldn’t agree more.

I think this tech will probably be made free, as was cartography for AoE2.

By the way, I don’t know if it’s just me and maybe someone else already pointed out, but it seems AI villagers NEVER garrison even when you attack them near a tower or town center. I don’t know if the devs thought about modifying the AI so it can use this new (for AoE1) mechanic.

Dunno if anyone else has pointed this out, but the AI needs to learn when to resign. I should not have to spend this much time hunting down and killing every single villager as they try to rebuild TCs and military buildings all over the map, even though they apparently can’t even afford military units because they’re doing nothing but rebuilding. It’s not fun playing against a cockroach; the AI is like one of those players that refuses to resign out of spite.

This! a lot of people seem to ignore this point

I love this DLC, but of course there are things that can be improved.
My suggestion for new civs and campaigns that should be introduced later in Return of Rome, because it feels like very important content that is missing:

  1. They could finally bring in the game the 3 barbarian civilizations that Romans hard hard time with:
Dacian Kingdom, Germanic tribes and Gauls.
(they could have the same architecture for all 3 and instead of priest at the temple they should have druids at the ponds)
Trajan had a huge war going on in Dacia against Decebalus and we all know about Caesar’s campaigns in Gaul and there was also the legendary fight of Teutoburg forest with Germanic tribes.
So they can easily make 3 campaigns just out of this.
  2. Another campaign could be made for the roman civil wars, the triumvirates.
  3. A campaign about the Chinese epic civil war too.
  4. Korean campaign about Choson unification, fighting with the northern nomad tribes (the deadly Jurchen) and the internal fight for the throne.

Also adding more architecture sets, a castle (you can name it fortress) and a unique unit for each civ would make the game way more times better.
