Return of Rome is finally here

Why on earth it need to be balanced? I donesn’t make any sense. It’s like asking for 100% vs 0% handicap to be balanced. There’s something called “having fun just messing around” or have you never played a match with a casual SP friend?

AoE1 has a lot less units. Adding the Camel Armour class to the one Camel unit shouldn’t be hard.
The same for thing like Elephant or Cavalry Archer armour classes.

Maybe RoR does. That’s more of a map feature then a civilisation feature, isn’t it?

Good chance they added that to RoR.

The Stone Thrower line outranges towers in AoE1 so why shouldn’t it outrange AoE2 Towers and Castles?

This is definitely the hardest part.

For a lot more analysis of how to balance AoE1 against AoE2 in a crossover mode:
AoE1DE should become an AoE2DE Expansion

If they go for the separated dataset approach, they will have their reasons. Imo, separated datasets make a lot more sense in terms of maintainability. You are always free to create a data mod for your casual SP friend and if you don’t do it, other people will.

Sure, it might not happen for some reasons. But balance shouldnt be one of them. As far as I know, for example, DM ranked lobbies have different tabs because the engine somehow couldnt allow - for the much work they were putting on it - 1v1 and team ranked together. So there might be some engine limitation that forces AOE 1 and 2 to not have crossplay. Yet, again, to forbid that based on balance only is such a narrow vision.

Do we have any info about factions?

All of AoE 1’s 16 civs will be there.

Ah shame its missing the variety of celts (gauls, iberians etc.

Let’s make sure RoR is successful enough that they decide on expanding on it in the future.

Agree. AOE3 and AOE4 need some new civs as well

Yeah. It’s really jarring that in the Roman campaign you fight against Yamato (Japan) because there is no civ representing a Hunnic civilisation.

Huns, Scythians, Xiongnu…any of them would be great. Then there is South Asia, which interacted with plenty of the AoE1 civs. Not to mention no Gothic or Celtic civs, which are again…kinda necessary with Rome in the game.

India and Celt civs are a must, I am so looking forward to those DLCs. Make it so!

Just in case someone still doubt it, the image description of the Colosseum says: A screenshot from Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.

As @xWHIT3W0LFx pointed out in another thread - the Colloseum exists in the editor as Amphitheatre:

and is also used in Attila 6:

It also exists as the Colosseum but that building is oval shape and has a larger footprint then the wonder.
The Amphitheatre building is likely there so it can represent an Amphitheatre that is not the Colosseum for Scenarios that take part in other parts of the Roman world.

IT’S HERE BOYS AND GIRLS!

Of all the new civs to add, they added RANDOM Vietnamese?! Not Scythians, Gauls, Nubians or Indians but Vietnamese??

I mean, I’m not that surprised considering the popularity of the game in Vietnam. Hopefully other civs will be added later.
