For comparison, I have created a quick video of manual destruction animations I created frame by frame for some custom graphics added for Romans.

maybe you could rip some 0 ad art. I remember some people from the dev team chaning the game to an isometric vision and it worked.

looks good, especially since you did it frame by frame. its kind of a lost art. seems like anymore people consider it nearly impossible to do lol.

Barbarian Spearman!

Looks great but I think it needs more shadow to match the game style. It’s too bright right now.

Thanks @PeakHornet46539. I have shared feedback with 3D artist to get their opinion as well. This lighting and style matches others the artist has done so far as near as I can tell. The skin was lightened to match woad raider and villager who are also shirtless. I think they did a great job. With that said, I thought I would get artist to take another look and see if they think any tweaks should be made. I think it’s just very difficult to match perfectly with game. I don’t want Perfect to be an enemy of good!

So Artist is going to do a darker render for comparison. Once complete will post here for feedback and decide which one to use…

Here is an alternate render comparison with Woad Raider. Middle one is the darker new render, far right is the original lighter version.

The unit seems a little bit bright

it might be easier to batch photoshop gamma or brightness side of thing rather than asking artist to make it darker. (unpack into frames and batch them) unless it is very easy work for him.

Thank you for mentioning me in the mod description. I just discovered this project and it looks amazing. Keep up the good work!

Since the last update the following progress has been made on the Mod:

  • Completed Barbarian Spearman
  • Completed Roman Senator to replace Western Merchant

Capture

Work in Progress and Testing

  • Redoing Persian Market. This still looks too bright compared to other buildings in game.
  • Completing Market upgrade for Persians.

Depending on how these buildings come out, will turn focus on Barbarians. Specifically would like Barbarian Civs to have ability to upgrade to Castle Age (aka Middle Antiquity) for balance. They will require a Barbarian looking Stronghold/Fort to replace castle, and Siege Workshop, and potentially University with limited tech upgrades. I found that the in game shrine does a nice job as a stand in for Monastery.

With the latest Expansion Dawn of the Dukes, will need to rework entire DAT file to conform to the new game format and civ count. I have completed about 90 % of units. Working on ships and considering redo of Civs Greeks and Egyptians. These civs will likely both now replace entire architectural style. I think Egyptians will replace Meso and Greeks possibly Asian. These cultures are farthest from the frontiers of Rome, so makes sense historically at least…

ROMAE AD BELLUM: UPATED RELEASE FOR DAWN OF DUKES

Apologies for the long gap in between updates. I took the time to wrap up tons of new units for this release. Custom Spearman units for Persians, Barbarians, & Egyptians.

New Scenario Editor unit Senator (replaces merchant) and new Centurion unit and Hero version.
The file structures have changed to support stand a lone civs for Greeks (Replace Asian) and Egyptians (Replace Mesos). UI and Language support for Aztecs (Egyptians) and Japanese (Greeks) only so far…

Part of the challenges between updates was 1) poor file management on my part to accommodate the 500MB size limit for upload (my personal mod now mirrors the upload structure, should make testing and further updates easier for community). 2) Having to rework the DAT file to support new Expansion Dawn of Dukes. Took the opportunity to streamline and clean up the DAT file.

I pared back the Babylonian AOE assets in this release (not happy with the size of most AOE Babylon buildings when ported to AOE 2). I replaced Castle with Babylonian Wonder and increased the size using DAT file.

I also started to support the Barbarians having ability to upgrade to Castle Age, middle antiquity. Will need to finish assets for this civs to make it all look right, (Temple, Siege WS, and University), however this will create more flexibility in custom scenarios and create more enemies for Rome to fight

I am continuing to work with 3D Artists to offer unique and interesting assets for the time period, including going back and reworking/improving existing assets. Please enjoy, and share feedback and suggestions on what you think we should focus on next. Thanks!!

Update, I am slowly working through Delta Objects for new buildings so Garrison Flags, Snow, and Flames all correctly render on buildings. These were off on several buildings, some more noticeable than others. Hope to have all these corrected for at least Romans by next release/update.

In addition, have started to revisit and improve units already released… First up is the Legionary that we released almost a year ago.

I love the look of the painted models from First Legion website. First Legion Roman Toy Soldiers - Legio XIIII (firstlegionltd.com)

Artist has already provided an example of updated Model texture. Unit will have old weathered steel look, change from Bight steel, and also have old bronze details.

Updated Body Armor, still work in progress. Will need to swap arm guard to right, possibly spread out the shoulder segments, but you can see the updated weathered steel work, damage, etc.

I understand some are having trouble DL this mod on AOE, so I have added a secondary DL option on Moddb. Romae ad Bellum mod for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Mod DB

Simply unzip file, and past the files into your Local Mod Directory. Open game, enable mod, exit game, and finally restart. Let me know if you have any issues here. Thanks!

Change List

9/11/2021

  • Update DAT to support Snow and Destruction Delta’s on most Roman Buildings.
  • Corrected SMX data graphic for Centurion/Roman Hero unit, removed magenta color around feathered helmet.
  • Add new Tech Pax Romana to Roman Repub and Roman Empire, enables early access to Monement in Middle Antiquity Age.

have you uploaded the files yet? it shows empty

Try now, looks like it was just authorized.
